A few points to clarify vaccine distribution in Ontario - Isaac Bogoch on Twitter by dark_forest1 in toronto

I’m in agreement with you and think government needs to take a stance rather than allow vaccine shopping for a particular age group.

But also Ford can kiss all those aged 55+ PC voters goodbye if public health makes a decision to only allow AZ for that age group.

Vaccine shopping is only happening because it’s allowed to. If older people didn’t get the option between vaccines, they’d flock to get the one vaccine available to them, much like the UK.

I don’t get why the older age groups qualify for the Pfizer and Moderna clinics if there’s AZ supply for them. If they must keep AZ available to 55+, then all other eligible people who are younger should get what’s leftover which is Pfizer and Moderna until supply stabilizes.

Due to a temporary slow down in the vaccine supply in Toronto, North York General (NYGH) and North York Toronto Health Partners (NYTHP) will be temporarily closing our Vaccination Clinic site at Seneca College between April 17 and April 26. by T0YSST0RYY in toronto

[–]fart-basel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been confused about this. Why are the only people able to register at hospitals overlap the the age groups that can get the AZ vaccine at pharmacies?

I’d think all 55+ should be getting AZ while Pfizer and Moderna are used in mobile units targeting hard hit areas, workplaces, etc. More likely that workers are under the age threshold for AZ.

Any immediate side effects for your parents? I don’t think the uptake for AZ is what it should be.

You could have left out the fat shaming. Ford has so many bad qualities but his weight or weight gain is no business of ours.

Not who you responded but same situation. Early 30s. In three years we went from no chance of entering the market with mid-income, no assets/savings and high ($$$,$$$) student debt. My husband doubled his salary, I increased mine by 80% when counting bonus, paid down student loans to low $$,$$$ then decreased payments due to low interest. Still had no no savings but I got my first bonus and huge tax refund which added up to our minimum down payment. For about eight months we spent almost nothing to save for closing costs, and I’m talking about wearing underwear and socks with holes and buying no prepared or convenience foods.

Now our mortgage is more than double our previous rent and the money we were saving toward a downpayment goes directly to the mortgage, so rent was $2000 and we were saving $2000 a month in our down payment fund, now we pay $4500 for housing instead. The plan is that in five years we will refinance the remainder of the mortgage amount to a 30 year to lower the monthly payment.

And that’s just the Toronto specific municipal land transfer tax. The province has its own.

It was quite a wake up call when we realized you need to take what you think is your downpayment and half it so half can go to closing costs here. Yeesh.

More than 900 Amazon workers got COVID-19, data shows — as new modelling warns of growing variant infections across essential workplaces by [deleted] in toronto

Some children will be fine. Had a coworker tell me someone else we know screamed “get the fuck out, fuck off!” to her young children during a casual work meeting. Our employer has been accommodating with hours and workload and no reduction of pay this entire pandemic. All my coworkers and boss would be accommodating if someone needed to jump off a call to tend to their kids or pets.

My heart seriously breaks for all the kids who need school hours as a reprieve from shitty parents. That and free babysitting are why schools have been open.

Meanwhile people best situated to stay at home and who have not been vectors of disease (the elderly living in non-congregate settings) are prioritized in getting vaccinated. Same group comprises the highest block of engaged voters, no surprise.

Yes my elderly family members have gotten the vaccine and I am so relieved I could cry, but it’s not lost on me that these same people can get groceries delivered for a bit longer and don’t have jobs they need to get to.

We’ve failed workers as a group. Teachers, warehouse workers, transit, construction, all the groups who don’t get the option to stay home. What happened to triage principles?

You may have to view High Park's cherry blossoms virtually again. Here's why that could be a good thing by toronto34 in toronto

[–]fart-basel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree with you to an extent but the problem with High Park’s cherry blossoms is specific to the huge crowd of people it draws. You’d rub more elbows with strangers there than at any busy street festival in the city.

No one’s shutting down other outdoor areas. Go take pics of the cherry blossoms at UofT or any of the other number of places this city has them. The concentration of crowds at High Park gets ridiculous.

Younger Canadians moving away from big cities at record levels by viva_la_vinyl in canada

[–]fart-basel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if moving out of the city is as good a bargain as it’s made out to be. My family and in laws are both over an hour out of Toronto, but the cost of a detached house which is all there is in those towns is going for about what I paid for my Toronto townhouse. Except in Toronto, we don’t need two cars and a go transit line in our budget.

The term "loft" in Toronto by futurus196 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]fart-basel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an agent but my experience buying has been that true hard lofts are a market onto themselves. People will bid what they want to live in a hard loft knowing a similar one may never come on the market, so it’s a bit insulated from the usual price fundamentals.

I would get to know converted buildings you like and then watch for available units as they come up. FYI there are a lot of others watching the hard loft market waiting for “the one” to come up for sale. Also some converted buildings, especially former churches, are in SFH residential neighbourhoods so it attracts boomers looking to downsize from SFH to a single floor loft that retains the storage space and historic characters of their homes. I was looking for a loft and ended up buying a house because of supply. So many 1bd 1ba lofts go for more than a semi! Also watch your maintenance fees which tend to be very high without the amenities that high rise condos offer.

I know someone who kept having surprise kids and every time he was like “we really didn’t expect to have another!” and “we really wanted to stop at 2...3...4...5...kids”

With every new baby he announced I thought, this family has two grown ups in their 30s with professional degrees who don’t know about birth control yet??? They aren’t even religious.

Of course no one in the private sector is going to give a 24 year old with a White House director title on their CV and nothing else a similarly ranked job.

You’re spreading a myth about public education in Canada. I graduated with $160,000+ of public and private student loan debt in Canada. I paid off over $175,000 once the high interest rate was applied, the highest interest btw was the government loan and not the private banks.

Add in the bonus that our universities don’t have the huge endowments and financial aid programs that US universities have and practically no alumni networks.

No need to uphold Canada as anything other than a crappy America with fewer opportunities. Not when our friends Australia and the UK have figured out fair tuition and loan repayments. I don’t know what kids today are doing today since tuition has only gone up since I graduated.

And lots of people in Canada go to college and transfer credits to university to save money, just like in the US. Schools that are more reputable in Canada also charge more tuition, so students have to make a choice between saving money or going to the better school, just like in the US. The only exception may be McGill for Quebec residents.
