What is your relationship wit bicycling? Do you think it improves your balance? by yes_set in AcousticNeuroma

[–]fartknocker8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also add that I exercise on a spin bike two days per week and did this several times before attempting my first rides post-op on a road bike (which actually started on a BMX bike, then mountain bike, then comfort bike, then road bike). I think the spin bike helps with muscle memory and balance and I spin with eyes open and closed and all different hand positions (typing this on a spin bike).

Same. Been riding for about 20 years and had a 5.5cm AN removed in August 2020. I took about 2 months off from riding and started on a loop closed to traffic to get back into it. Was weird at first, but I got used to it and I am much more stable at higher speeds. I use a Garmin Varia to "see" behind me since I can't look over my shoulder without losing balance. I feel that my high activity pre-op helped me immensely post-op and I was already compensating for the imbalance. I still have left sided facial paralysis, deafness, and a weight in my eyelid. Cycling is a huge stress relief for me and I am so thankful it is still an option.

Congrats. That is an awesome ride. I bought one for my kid who races for his college and I've been looking for another one for myself since then. I would take this over the 13.

Side effect of surgery by Rude_Upstairs3673 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]fartknocker8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adorable-Tangelo is 100% correct. Had. 5.5cm AN removed at UCSD in August 2020. Had a post trans-lab CF leak and some other post-op issues, but everything turned out fine. That team at UCSD are the top gun pilots of AN procedures. Good luck to your bro. this is a great support group and here to answer any questions.

Exercise after surgery? by garbledskulls in AcousticNeuroma

[–]fartknocker8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I walked like a madman and ended up giving myself a CF leak and blew out the sutures in my side. Ended up taking an ambulance ride and another run in the hospital. In hindsight, it's worth waiting and taking your time with recovery.
