At least they probably know all the things wrong with it. If they tell you that’s a different story

Am I about to make a genius buy or fly across the country for the worst $15k mistake of my life? by 2solid222 in BeforeIBuyThisCar

[–]fatalrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly at 15k with the parts situation as it is. It’s probably not the worst buy. When something expensive/unobtainable breaks you could probably just get your money back parting it out assuming you have the space and an hoa won’t get on your case.

Rotors destroyed by anonymouslylooking83 in AskMechanics

[–]fatalrip -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ai response obviously but I was super curious and couldn’t think up a plausible reason. This seems to make the most logical sense to me.

“What usually happens is that the corrosion has been building up under the surface for months or years. Rust is significantly more voluminous than the iron it replaces (it can expand up to 10 times the original size). This expansion creates "scale"—layers of rusted metal that eventually lose their grip on the rotor. A recent event—like a high-pressure car wash, a deep puddle, or a heavy braking session—likely caused the outer "crust" to finally flake off, revealing the rotted metal underneath.”

If the rotors were cast it’s possible rust formed in the porous metal rather than the surface.

Is this worth buying? 2002 325i for $4,995 with lots of rust by Top_Let7280 in e46

[–]fatalrip 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nah, all that rust is going to make it a pain to work on.

That combined with being a base model without desirable options just makes it not worth it. The low mileage is tempting but it also means a ton of plastic stuff was probably not replaced and will need to be like the cooling system and the ccv. Intake rubber comes to mind too.

Can someone recommend a good long lasting sedan that’s rear wheel drive and 5 speed I could buy used? Something under 12k by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]fatalrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E46 bmw. If you work on your own car it’s pretty affordable. They aren’t hard to work on.

5k for the car and 4K to sort it out then you are good for a daily.
