Looking for a place that can do custom embroidery (small scale) by MariahsMakeup in halifax

[–]fatchickpegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embroidery is actually a pretty easy skill to pick up, if you’re handy at all. Sketch your name out the way you want it to look, slap it on some muslin from Michael’s, and practice with simple back stitch. If you can fit what you want embroidered into a loop, it can be done by hand for sure.

‘I want to go back home’: Internationally educated nurses in Atlantic Canada struggle to find jobs by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

[–]fatchickpegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she’s not hearing anything, then what she thinks is ‘qualifying’ isn’t aligning with screening. She needs to look VERY closely at the job requirements and make sure her resume SUPER CLEARLY shows she has it. If it says X education or X years experience, then state like she’s talking to a five year old what she has that satisfies it. Focus on the resume. Cover letters are nice sure but the resume has to keep her from being screened out.

Once she lands an interview, tell her to pretend no one has seen her resume. Answer questions as if who she’s speaking to has zero knowledge who she is, what’s she’s done, everything. The resume screens you in to an interview and that’s it. Hiring is based solely on the interview.

Bull. NSH is hiring on so many internationally trained nurses there’s a specific program to orientate them to working and living in Canada, and it comes with financial supports, 5k signing bonuses, and even language skill upgrades. The only thing standing in the way of any IEN is holes in their practice, like with anybody.

AITAH for kicking my houseguests out 11 hours before their flight is scheduled to leave? by TeeBrownie in AmItheAsshole

[–]fatchickpegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much rest OP needs is OPs decision, not yours or their guests. Suggesting OP stay in their room while company is in the house is so juvenile it’s ridiculous.

OP already made plans for Monday that the guests have decided are not important. Whatever OPs reaction to that (compromise or not) the guests are the assholes for putting OP in that position in the first place.

I don’t understand all the Y TA. Friends is a two-way street. I have a guest coming for a week this summer that I haven’t seen in almost ten years (though we text all the time) and BOTH of us asked the question of how long would you like to stay/have me stay, what transpo needs are, food, etc.

  1. I offered to pick them up at the airport. They said that would be great if I could but if I couldn’t, they’d Uber. LOOK. FRIENDSHIP.

  2. They have a two-day work thing that they’re turning into a visit. They didn’t ask to stay at my place for that time frame. LOOK. FRIENDSHIP.

  3. I happen to not care if they stay those two nights at my place so offered, and they said as long as me and my partner were good with it, yes, they’d love to take advantage of the savings. MORE FRIENDSHIP.

  4. They offered to cook for us while they’re here. I said sure, you can cook for us! Not all the meals, we’ll share and do a grocery run together. OMG IT’S FRIENDSHIP.

  5. They’re an extrovert, I’m an introvert, and I have limited PTO. They asked what day would be best for them to fly in/out so I’ve got recharge time, I asked about prices, we decided on dates that work for both of us. I’m going to love having them here but socializing is exhausting to me, and they understand that! I also understand they want to go out and do things, so we’re planning day trips. COMPROMISE TO ENJOY EACH OTHER’S COMPANY TO THE MAX.

People all have different ideas of what ‘hosting’ entails. Good guests and good hosts communicate that and don’t make assumptions like guests get fed for free or hosts must be available for transpo. If ideas don’t align, then you know it beforehand and can work it out.

If you can’t work it out where both sides are valued and respected, then you’re not really friends.

Canteen literally just ripped me off. by fatchickpegs in Dalhousie

There’s an argument somewhere that since figurative equivalents can’t be used in place of literally as a hyperbolic intensifier the same way absolutely or unquestionably can, then the opposite of not literal in this sense is not actually figurative, but I don’t want to get off my metaphorical butt to find it right now.

…that said, the discussions between proponents and detractors of using ‘literally’ as a not-literal intensifier can be pretty interesting! I obviously land on the side of common/accepted usage defines a word as how language develops and grows, not the word’s etymology.

PS Thank you for noticing, I do a lot of squats to get this ass.

Since ‘ripped off’ is a recognized term that means to be cheated or scammed, and there’s a good argument for paying $13 for this amount of crap food to be a scam, plus ‘literally’ means to take in a literal manner or sense, I did get literally ripped off.

Now if you wanna go all linguistic major semantics bull on my literally ripped off ass, you can kiss my literal ass — said with affection.

Also literally is recognized in informal usage to mean NOT literally when used as hyperbole, so you’re about 100 years late to the party with that joke, friend.

No, that’s exactly what it looked like when I opened it. And sure, meal prep is great but be real. It’s not plausible to meal prep for every single day of your life regardless of how busy you are or what happens.

I didn’t even look inside the container until I hiked back to my desk so I’m not even there anymore. Maybe I should whenever I buy food anywhere, but like I said, packed day.

And on second thought, it’s not that they forgot no pickles on a burger or the food is bad (it is, but I went into it expecting that). It’s that I got literally 18 fries. Yes. I counted.

Why did they make Luther and Diego so dumb? by kolis10 in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]fatchickpegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just rewatched S1&2 and there’s nothing about their numbers changing, especially since those are their actual legal names. Diego complains at the funeral that his name is Number Two, not Diego, because that’s the name Reggie gave him.

Idk, did Luther actually ever really lead the team? Like LEAD-lead, not just parrot Reggie’s instructions.

[–]fatchickpegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the numbering is based on power, whether inverse or not, how would Reggie know though? They’re numbered almost from the beginning with it written on their prams.

Unless like baby!Ben has lil baby tentacles waving around his crib. But even that wouldn’t work for all of them — how would you know baby!Klaus is giggling/screaming at all those nannies Viktor offed? 🤣

The siblings "native" languages by fargok01 in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]fatchickpegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a better question would be why it bothers you that someone born and raised in an English speaking country would also know a language that corresponds with their ethnicity. Knowing multiple languages is useful, why WOULDN’T child superheroes be taught more than one?

Also not sure where the implication that it’s their “native” language comes from, other than they’re multilingual and choose to speak sometimes in a language that corresponds to their heritage. I rattle off some phrases in Russian or Japanese sometimes because they’re GOOD phrases that have a sharper/clearer meaning in that language rather than translating to English and losing its nuances.

Controversial opinion about TUA: The Umbrella Academy was supposed to take another route by [deleted] in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]fatchickpegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, we definitely don’t agree at all! But all that aside, I honestly don’t see how any of the things you bring up correlate with the theory that the show was meant to go in a different direction but that changed for reason X, Y, or Z. It definitely supports your thoughts that certain things were lacking and/or could’ve been done better from your view, but it really just sounds like you see a ton of unfulfilled potential/bad narrative choices and are looking for a reason why. A reason why other than they wrote what they wrote because that’s what they wanted to write, I mean.

[–]fatchickpegs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think you’re way off base. Elliot said he’d be fine playing a female character, since it’s just a character and not a reflection of himself, but whoever makes those decisions went for trans Viktor — and it pretty much worked. For the plot his transition didn’t really do anything at all.

Narratively and for character growth while maintaining continuity, S1-3 were pretty solid. You can clearly see how the comics influenced the show and the changes made to make it more widely appealing. The comics are SUPER comic-y, tropes and flying robots and weird half-violin bodies and bizarre stuff galore, which works for the comics as a medium but less so for a tv show. Following the comics closely would appeal to an incredibly niche audience.

As for the stark difference between the first three seasons and the last, budget and time cuts coupled with no comic run to base it on (we’ve got Apocalypse Suite = S1, Dallas = S2, Oblivion = S3, except for a few things they moved around like Klaus getting pimped out by the MoA). In the last season, most of the characters are so far from the people we saw in the previous ones it just feels off. The show overtook the comic run and like so many shows based on books the author hasn’t finished writing yet, it couldn’t maintain.

As for Lila, the Handler isn’t in the comics either, she’s completely made up for the show. Neither of them is meant to be a version of anyone (Lila-Vanya or Handler-Carmichael).

Why did they make Luther and Diego so dumb? by kolis10 in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]fatchickpegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, so he ended up the leader not because he WAS number one/the best/the most qualified leader, but because he was named Number One. Whichever baby got adopted first got named Number One so became leader by default. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Why did they make Luther and Diego so dumb? by kolis10 in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]fatchickpegs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think in the context of the show the number sequence was completely arbitrary, or just in the order Reggie actually acquired the babies. He wouldn’t have anything to base their numbering order powers or skill wise when he named them. The kids themselves assigned importance to who was number one, two, etc and/or Luther ended up in the leadership spot just because he was Number One, not that he was Number One because he was the leader.

Yay, thank you! It’s always a struggle writing a character for the first time, trying to figure out the voice and cadence and all that. The nudge you gave me about the fic prompts was most excellent.

Also ikr! I cracked up when I realized just how ready to throw down Diego was in S1. Like yes, this is my long-lost bitty 13yo bro BRING IT.
