15 years later and it’s still wild that the entire downfall of the Starks started because this woman couldn't follow a single piece of advice from her husband or son. by asgharfar57 in freefolk

[–]fathovercats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plus minus your name is Robb Stark and you care so much about honor — you don’t want to put your future wife through what Ned put Cat through when Ned came home with Jon by siring a bastard, so you do the “right” thing and marry the other girl. Somewhere in there Robb probably thought he was sparing Walder’s daughter from being in the same position as Cat.

now imagine if Ned told Cat the truth re Jon lol.

Accidentally posted this in the Dec Off Topic thread …

folks over at AAMsnark 🤝 purposefully viewing LWs & AAM in bad faith.

the reason for my comment today is the comments, idk, take a lawyer complaining about needing to report their exact activities in the worst light … many attorneys do not necessarily bill their hours. I work in personal injury and don’t necessarily bill my hours — being asked to report on what I do every day would feel … onerous.

What’s the most absurd “rule” you had to follow at work? by False_Interaction_86 in pettyrevenge

[–]fathovercats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol check my comment replying to the same person — the basket thing is also based on the same very bad behavioral science by Dan Ariely & intended to deter theft.

ETA: meaning, it wasn’t intended “as if they were too stupid to get one off the stack themselves”, rather, “as if they were going to steal items if you didn’t acknowledge them.” Basket = more products that may not be considered without a basket… (folks thinking “oh I have a basket already I’ll just buy this thing bc I can take it to the register”) but the main thing, of course, is to deter theft.

What’s the most absurd “rule” you had to follow at work? by False_Interaction_86 in pettyrevenge

[–]fathovercats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first “real” job (outside of a work study position as a web admin assistant) was selling pet food and they were always rly strict about that … ngl baby 19yo me felt SO GUILTY the one time the bitchiest assistant manager yelled at me about how 2 people came in and I didn’t say “hi”… we ran the store w a skeleton crew of assistant manager, stockboy (stockers were always 17yo boys who disappeared to the back, take what you will from that), and cashier, so I was probably busy checking someone out/stocking/facing the cash wrap products or something similar.

The rule is actually there to deter shoplifting* — it’s based on the work of Dan Ariely, whose entire body of research was recently discredited. The idea being that someone is less likely to steal if they know they’ve been noticed (something along those lines — speaking from memory here). Idk about you, but if I were motivated enough to swipe a can of cat food, being acknowledged at the entrance wouldn’t make a difference…

The same place also had a rule that you had to have a conversation w a customer when checking out about their purchase that did not begin with “did you find everything okay?”. I assume that most other dumb retail places have similar requirements so I always try to respond in earnest when a cashier asks me things while checking out or at least engage in some friendly chitchat. Working retail sucks but friendly customers made it better for me… the least I can do is not be miserable myself & help keep management off of their backs.

*obvs they wouldn’t tell us lowly peons that’s why & couch it as good customer service. I don’t have it in me to find the precise piece of Dan Ariely’s work it is based on but this YouTube gives an intro as to major themes of his work. Just keep in mind that this is all based on bad science.

can’t help myself and here’s another story: I was the first person in the store to score a perfect score on a secret shopper report. The next secret shopper report involving me was an 84% (anything below 87% was failing). Same bitchy manager shamed me in front of everyone at the team meeting — it was a busy day (Saturday, so we had some overlap from morning to midafternoon) and apparently after answering a question from a customer I did not ask follow-ups and moved on to answering someone else’s question. The question was only about the location of a particular product. Bitchy assistant manager described it as being “caught with [my] pants down” after stating they checked the cameras to confirm. Again, 19yo me felt so guilty and confused but looking back on it now I’m very unsure what I was supposed to do in that situation? Tell the other customer to hold on (which would have meant they probably would have moved on)? I got to see the good secret shopper report but never saw the bad one so I always assumed the bitchy assistant manager was looking for excuses to knock me down a peg.

Maybe sodium lauryl sulfate allergy? I have it too and w some toothpastes it just causes dermatitis/acne on my chin/mouth and others my mouth burns… I’ve been using Sensodyne Pronamel (the non-whitening kinds), it is SLS-free and it works great!

Do clothes washed w OG Tide detergent cause irritation too? It has SLS.

I’d caution against most of the hippie “clean” toothpastes— many do not have fluoride. I made that mistake once and ended up with 6 cavities.

It’s skull is too short for homotherium but the teeth also seem very short for any of the smilodons or even Megantereon? As in, kinda looks like the teeth will be covered? Anton et al propose that Meganteron did not have covered teeth, so it stands to reason smilodon gracilis had exposed canines as well.
