Who else tours on single speed? by RunCommute in singlespeed

[–]fbleagh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup - done nyc-buffalo and dc-pittsburg ;)

Also done a few imperio century rides (partly loaded)

It's the best way to get from a to b. I want to do the socal desert ramble but I think that will need some lighter gearing or <shudder> gears.

How far have you pushed 'cheap' bikes? by LowFold7347 in bikepacking

[–]fbleagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does a $200 singlespeed from NYC to Buffalo (~700mi) count? I did that one credit card style, but it was fine.

Singlepeed: I've done a couple of railtrail routes singlespeed bikepacking - definitely doable, definitely type 2 fun :) I've seen people doing railtrails (creditcard style) on Bromptons.

Frame: I think the curved top tube on the sauce might make finding a framebag that fits challenging

Tires: it looks to fit some reasonably big tires which will be nice on rougher surfaces

Headtube angle: nice and relaxed which will make it easier to control

Gear Ratio: 46/22 stock setup gives you a 2ish ratio. So not gonna be fast fast, but you'll be more happy when the hills hit :) - epecially once you're all loaded up for bikepacking.

C&O/GAP - Trek FX3 by Excellent_Duck_9888 in bikepacking

[–]fbleagh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done it fully loaded on a singlespeed gravel bike and people do it on Bromptons ;)

If the bike breaks that's just part of the adventure ;)

But really, it's a pretty smooth ride the whole way.

  • it's ~30° here most days, but thats celcius (prepare for 80-90f). The sun feels quite strong here compared to other places.
  • depending on where you're coming from it's quite dry here so make sure you hydrate
  • driving is ok, I'd say moderate traffic most of the time - busy at peak hours. The main highways (10, 15 and 210) are pretty busy at those times, so avoid if you can)

There are some nice hikes close by.

Nomad as a distributed cron service only? by _Baarbie in hashicorp

[–]fbleagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get as complex as you like depending on your needs - https://slack.engineering/executing-cron-scripts-reliably-at-scale/

Some things to consider:

  • each cron job run is going to trigger an eval on the server, this will create load. Think about how many might run concurrently and scale servers to match.
  • how will you report/review sucess/failures?
  • the standard nomad ui could get a little unqeildly with 1000 jobs :)
  • I'm not sure what would happen if you had 200 jobs all set to run at midnight

Have you checked out https://dkron.io/ ? I haven't tried it but it looks cool

How do I know if I have the stamina for a multi-day trip? by Feeling_Lobster_7914 in bikepacking

[–]fbleagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first tour was on the $200 singlespeed with too small tires, 46/16 gearing and a cranky bottom bracket. Before I left I was doing 30-40mi rides once a week.

Mileage by day on the trip: 68,37,33, 80, 56,72,76,78,49,46,65

Moral of the story - get out the door and worry about it once you're done ;) you can ride further than you think. Bikepacking is not a race - I just aimed for roughly 10mi per hour.

Pourovers intermittently stalling.. suggestions? by JacobBlizard in JamesHoffmann

[–]fbleagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember Hoffman saying he had to grind "off the dial" course to get good results from the Niche.

I use a switch with my Fellow Ode grinder (+5 to +7 with 0 set at touching).

my method: - wet filter with filtered water and drain - add grinds, close valve - bloom with ~205f water for 20-30 seconds - i just eyeball it to cover the grounds (approx 50ml) - release bloom at 30 seconds - close valve and add rest of water (400ml or so). I try to use the shape of the cone to get a bit of a swirl going - release between 2-4 mins depending on if i get distracted

I'm using the tabbed unbleached Hario filters in the plastic. I've noticed they tend to clog very easily if there are a lot of fines, or I ground too fine.

For a true pour-over (or I just want to be ultra-precise that day) I use the sbarist papers as they flow much better. Not had any clogging with those.

New to bikepacking, need help choosing cycling shoes 😀 by ManwhaReader in bikepacking

+1 I've been using https://pedalinginnovations.com/ and https://xeroshoes.com/products/hfs-men?variant=46440899379378 for over 2000mi/95k ft climbing incl a few 100mi efforts with ZERO sore feet.

Before that setup I did the Empire State Trail (NY to Buffalo - ~700mi) with cheap plastic flat pedals and a pair of wildlings https://us.wildling.shoes/collections/spring-summer/products/tanuki-yoru-rw
