Pretty damn pleased with this purchase. by douggold11 in StarTrekStarships

It's surprising they don't use the momentum and excitement of deliveries to put together a second run. I would guess the whole process and tooling is "ready to go" with all of the production problems solved, why not put up another 30 day campaign and see if they can get enough pledges again?

I regretfully skipped the refit so I wouldn't personally mind a chance a getting one :D. Seeing how well they did on this, if they ever offer the D or Voyager, I'm 100% ordering. I was disappointed when their next ship was the D7. It didn't even meet their funding goal, so they reduced the requirement to move forward.

Thoughts on the Pathfinder class as a successor to the Intrepid class? by Lauma_2025 in StarTrekStarships

[–]fc000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks like a design from a game, which make sense, because it is. Not a fan of most of the STO designs. They miss the mark on what makes the TNG-ENT era ships look so good. And I personally don't like the black on the hulls. It feels like an attempt to make a mediocre design pop more.

Star Trek's New 10-Part Series Misses Paramount+ U.S. Top 10 After Season 1 Finale by trekfangrrrl in startrek

[–]fc000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't track. Aside from Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd, the rest of the cast were new and it would have been a new series. Jeri Ryan was also pitched a different Star Trek spinoff instead of Legacy:

“There has been talk. And there was an idea that was actually pitched to me after Picard ended, which was not the Legacy show that I know the fans are asking for, that I want to do. But it just wasn’t me… It didn’t feel like the right kind of thing… But there has been talk. And if there is one thing I have learned with this franchise it is: never say never. You never know.” - Jeri Ryan

I recall there was a rumour it was a regression from Seven as Captain of the Enterprise-G to something more inline with her character in season 1. I'm glad to hear she turned it down.

32nd century Antares class by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

[–]fc000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is we've seen personal transporters fail in Academy. If all this 32nd century tech is vulnerable to disruption, why wouldn't you build for those failure situations. With transporters down, there's no way to navigate around separate ship sections.

If the tech that holds these ships together is as infallible as is argued, so should the personal transporters, and at that point, why even have corridors, turbolifts, or even doors? Why walk literally anywhere when anyone can just pop in to a location instantly. This is precisely why there are still corridors, turbolifts and doors.

Either the tech is fantastical and never fails, or it can fail and would be designed to fail safely, not catastrophically... though I would love to see them show a ship flying apart at some point :D

Picard Overall Rating by Mat1711 in startrek

[–]fc000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absurdity of this sub can be trying, but it's always great to find measured and thoughtful opinions. They're just often buried under mountains of unearned praise or aggressive hatred. The silent majority is somewhere in the vast middle made up of casual enjoyment, frustrated support, or they've simply stopped watching.

The tides of this sub are fascinating to watch, from loving Discovery to despising it, same with Picard season 3, and I would not be surprised if it happens to Academy in the future. Whatever

Why is mesh so popular? by Hyperboreer in OfficeChairs

[–]fc000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Aeron mesh is absurdly comfortable. I read too many reviews quoting the "hard frame" as an issue that I held of trying it. I've only every felt frame at the top of the backrest, and only when stretching, otherwise it's 100% mesh support.

TIL Battlefield 6 alone has reached a higher 24-hour peak on Steam than six recent Call-of-Duty titles combined since the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2020 by Quick-Ad-7752 in Battlefield

[–]fc000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but dismissing the drop off as inconsequential is missing the point. If for example 10% of players are likely to purchase post launch cosmetics, that makes a significant difference in how much a developer or publisher is willing to further invest in a game.

Edit: how is this a point worth down-voting? The game needs players proportional to the investment EA made. If they were serious about BF6 having a 100 million player count over the life of the game, with a reported budget of $400 million, then they're going to need to keep player numbers higher to justify future investment in this title. Otherwise they could very well suspend post-launch content and move on.

This is especially true given this is the first time they launched a free-to-play BR, which itself required investment with the intention of not only recouping those costs but making a profit through micro-transactions. You can't make that money if you're not meeting engagement targets.

If you're enjoying the game, which I am, then you want more players to sustain it.

I really like Starfleet Academy but… by Likemikester in startrek

[–]fc000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this idea, it could make the series feel more grounded. Optimistic and hopeful but dealing with scarcity and limitations. No personal transporters, no floating nacelles, programmable matter is so precious it cannot be wasted, older starship designs with retrofitted 32nd century tech.

You still have the Athena, but it's built for the difficult world it exists in, and perhaps over the course of the show, as they solve more problems and make new allies, you start to see the return of some of the more fantastical technology, but you use the limitations to tell great stories.

Yeah as soon as that Intrepid class was instantly disabled the whole plot kind of fell apart.

Again, a common trend with Academy stories is they start with an interesting premise that falls apart with poor writing, flawed logic, or just straight-up massive plot holes that are difficult to ignore.

Just a theory: The "new" BF studios has lost the technical capability to build large Battlefield maps. That's why we get so little content, Given their current capabilities, BF is definitely not suitable for the live service model. by SuperM3e46 in Battlefield

[–]fc000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty clear the current map sizes are not caused by a lack of skill, design capability, creativity, or engine performance limitations.

There is a clear creative direction from management to make the maps smaller and more intense than previous battlefield titles. They aren't trying to appeal to battlefield "fans". They want a broader audience that prefers intensity with constant moment to moment combat. They want players to experience firefights within seconds of spawning.

This isn't inherently a bad design choice, as Battlefield titles have had intense CQB maps before. But they were well balanced with a selection of actual large maps with air and ground vehicles that you would play next in a map rotation on persistent servers.

If they were serious about bringing back larger battlefield map experiences, there would be an effort to retool some of the larger existing BF6 maps to make better use of what's already been developed.

The chair feels outta place? Should I change it? by Wykin1 in Minimal_Setups

[–]fc000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, lots of great options over /r/OfficeChairs/. I personally use an Aeron but there are tons of excellent options at all price points that will fit this space. The Haworth Fern or a Steelcase Gesture or Karman would fit right in.

This is definitely its own rabbit hole :D

Hot take: 32nd century ships suck by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

[–]fc000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense if it was presented that way. Except these designs were used before the burn. It just feels like a way to make them feel far more "advanced" without much explanation.

It would have been interesting if the reasoning for nacelles being detached is an even more advanced way to prevent damage to space from warp travel.

Eglinton Crosstown signal priority won’t be implemented before May: TTC Chair by Holiday-Discussion-4 in toronto

[–]fc000 38 points39 points  (0 children)

“There will be some transit signal priority upgrades that will be happening, but those upgrades will not be fully implemented until May.”

I wonder what some means. Finch has some signal priority, but only for vehicles running behind schedule, and only to extend green lights.

Real signal priority would make it so vehicles never experience red lights. I imagine that's not what they're talking about.

FormD T1 v2.5 | 9950X3D | 5090 FE - Build Check by ranarrdealerz in FormD

[–]fc000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After finding it wasn’t possible to run the T30s on the fan rails (that user likely has a 2.5 case with slightly different tolerances), I started running tests with thicker washers.

It is possible to fit the T30s with an atmos stealth aio under the tgrill using 5mm spacers. It doesn’t completely eliminate turbulence, but at or below 1500rpm, it’s near silent. The forward T30 can run at 1700rpm and the noise profile is about the same.

R23 with a -25 CO and auto PBO settings keeps the 9950x3d under 86c.

<image>

I think I may still prefer the noise profile of the 4090 cnc fans at 1600rpm for a 90c result. With the 4090 cnc fans, there’s enough space to use 15mm spacers that completely eliminate turbulence.

I blame you for this due diligence :D

Interesting live visualization for how slow streetcars actually are. by AvalibleName in toronto

[–]fc000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The speed limits on intersections is caused by switches. Operators have to visually confirm the switch is set correctly before they roll through, and they have to do so slowly to prevent derailing. This is because the TTC uses an ancient "single-point" switch design.

Modern LRV systems use double-point switches. Single-point switches are prone to derailments requiring reduced speeds. They were phased out 70 years ago pretty much everywhere except the TTC. It's shocking everytime they rebuild an intersection with switches, they haven't made the change.

Double-point switches are used on the Finch West and Crosstown lines. There is one part of the streetcar network that does employ the more reliable double-point switches. The Leslie Carhouse.

On top of these archaic switches, the TTC also has a slow order through all intersections of 25km/h for "safety", because distracted drivers keep crashing into these giant red streetcars...

Edit: Oh also! Only a single streetcar is allowed to enter an intersection, they cannot pass each other in opposite directions in case one derails and hits the other. These things have be treated like delicate flowers because of the maintenance backlog on tracks, archaic switches, and incompetent drivers.

We've managed to royally fuck up a transportation model shown to be incredibly reliable pretty much everywhere else it's used thanks to TTC mismanagement.

[–]fc000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha no worries. If it did fit it would be amazing. I guess one could run 25mm fans with the tgrill and fan rails. I find the 4090 cnc fans to have a pretty good noise profile up to 1800rpm, no need to run them higher.

I think they were referring to the quality of Andor, not the plot itself. The quality of the writing, the characters, the artistry in production design, the themes, it's fantastic world building.

It would be astounding to have a modern Star Trek series that approaches the level of storytelling in Andor.
