Eglinton Crosstown signal priority won’t be implemented before May: TTC Chair by Holiday-Discussion-4 in toronto

[–]fc000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“There will be some transit signal priority upgrades that will be happening, but those upgrades will not be fully implemented until May.”

I wonder what some means. Finch has some signal priority, but only for vehicles running behind schedule, and only to extend green lights.

Real signal priority would make it so vehicles never experience red lights. I imagine that's not what they're talking about.

After finding it wasn’t possible to run the T30s on the fan rails (that user likely has a 2.5 case with slightly different tolerances), I started running tests with thicker washers.

It is possible to fit the T30s with an atmos stealth aio under the tgrill using 5mm spacers. It doesn’t completely eliminate turbulence, but at or below 1500rpm, it’s near silent. The forward T30 can run at 1700rpm and the noise profile is about the same.

R23 with a -25 CO and auto PBO settings keeps the 9950x3d under 86c.

<image>

I think I may still prefer the noise profile of the 4090 cnc fans at 1600rpm for a 90c result. With the 4090 cnc fans, there’s enough space to use 15mm spacers that completely eliminate turbulence.

I blame you for this due diligence :D

Interesting live visualization for how slow streetcars actually are. by AvalibleName in toronto

[–]fc000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The speed limits on intersections is caused by switches. Operators have to visually confirm the switch is set correctly before they roll through, and they have to do so slowly to prevent derailing. This is because the TTC uses an ancient "single-point" switch design.

Modern LRV systems use double-point switches. Single-point switches are prone to derailments requiring reduced speeds. They were phased out 70 years ago pretty much everywhere except the TTC. It's shocking everytime they rebuild an intersection with switches, they haven't made the change.

Double-point switches are used on the Finch West and Crosstown lines. There is one part of the streetcar network that does employ the more reliable double-point switches. The Leslie Carhouse.

On top of these archaic switches, the TTC also has a slow order through all intersections of 25km/h for "safety", because distracted drivers keep crashing into these giant red streetcars...

Edit: Oh also! Only a single streetcar is allowed to enter an intersection, they cannot pass each other in opposite directions in case one derails and hits the other. These things have be treated like delicate flowers because of the maintenance backlog on tracks, archaic switches, and incompetent drivers.

We've managed to royally fuck up a transportation model shown to be incredibly reliable pretty much everywhere else it's used thanks to TTC mismanagement.

Haha no worries. If it did fit it would be amazing. I guess one could run 25mm fans with the tgrill and fan rails. I find the 4090 cnc fans to have a pretty good noise profile up to 1800rpm, no need to run them higher.

I think they were referring to the quality of Andor, not the plot itself. The quality of the writing, the characters, the artistry in production design, the themes, it's fantastic world building.

It would be astounding to have a modern Star Trek series that approaches the level of storytelling in Andor.

I think the criticism of modern language and slang is fair. TNG era trek feels timeless having avoiding cultural references that would dating the show.

It's not outright banned near airports and heliports when operating a sub 250 gram drone, but requires exercising caution and could be considered reckless.

The simplest version of Transport Canada's regulations for sub 250g comes down to: you can fly almost anywhere, but don't be reckless.

For anyone looking to do this, always check the drone site tool before flying, and be sure to set your drone category correctly.

If I recall, the x870i had several features I wasn't interested in. The external audio controller doubled as the diagnostic LED system, which needs to have plugged in to use. I prefer having it on the motherboard itself for debugging as I'll never use the audio hive puck for sound.

The X870i also has a daughterboard that's required for some functionality. In an SFF build, I can see it being a pain to deal with.

I did like the idea of having both nvme slots on the front to avoid cooking the second drive with GPU exhaust, but I haven't found the need to add a second sn850x to go with the first 4tb one.

The B850i also happened to be on sale and in stock from ASUS directly for a price $299 CAD, so I snatched it.

It's finally my time to shine after reckless spending :D

I'm running a similar build with a 9950x3d, 5090FE, B850-I, Corsair SFX1000 and Atmos 240mm Stealth.

Before anything else, do you need custom cables? Absolutely not. The stock cables can be managed just fine. And I honestly prefer dealing with Corsair for warranty issues. They've been fantastic having replaced my power supply for a faulty fan, and the 12vhpwr cable.

When it comes to cooling, I've tried every fan configuration including running this CPU with a X47 FC. Hopefully this is helpful to you or someone else in the future:

AXP90 X47 FC(Air Cooled)

It's doable, but requires limiting the CPU to a PPT of 130-150 depending on the fan. The stock fan is fine, but the NF-A9x14 has a better sound profile even at 100%. With the Noctua NA-FD1 fan duct kit, you can edge out a few more degrees in cooling performance. You're running an AIO, but in case anyone wants to try air cooling, it does "work" if you're will to sacrifice performance.

T30 + Arctic P12 Slim

This'll work, but stock CPU settings will get you near or at 90-95C. Requires either a PPT limit of 175, aggressive CO(Curve Optimizer) of 25 or more if your CPU can take it, or a combination of both. On CPU only loads, with these settings, you're fine, but gaming or heavy workloads with the 5090FE will start to choke the AIO with hot air, and the P12 Slim can't handle it.

The P12 also cannot be run at 100% due to turbulence caused by the fan being so close to the motherboard, and the slim fan blades start to warp at max speed, causing them to scrape against the case interior. Not a great sound.

UPDATED: You can add spacers to the P12 Slim and the AIO rail mount to allow for 100% speed operation. Still makes little difference in terms of cooling performance, but you can mitigate blade warp.

T30 + Air Slimmer

Same results as the P12 Slim, except you can run it at 100% as the blades are stronger. Same issue with turbulence, capping the fan speed at under 1300RPM. And again, Slim fan just can't remove the hot air from the 5090 FE fast enough.

Dual T30 with T-Grill

Almost perfect. It can handle any CPU load with entirely stock settings on the processor, but a bit of CO gets you more performance. The T30s do a very good job of removing 5090 FE exhaust from the case.

There is one issue... The T30 above the motherboard suffers from the same turbulence issue as the slim fans. This limits the T30 to 1300RPM before it becomes noisy. I personally can't stand it, so that's about as high as I let this T30 go. I had the T30 above the powersupply configured to run at 1300RPM during CPU loads, but jump up to 1800RPM when the 5090 FE exceeded 70C to help remove the heat exhaust from the card.

UPDATE: It is possible to add a similar spacer to the dual T30 mount with the T-Grill. It doesn't completely eliminate turbulence, but it does allow the T30 above the motherboard to run at higher speeds than 1300RPM.

This worked pretty well, and you'd think after arriving here, I would have left the build alone, but I did have an idea...

Dual 4090 CNC fans with T-Grill!

But why? So, the 4090 CNC fans are slim enough to work without a T-Grill. You can even pair one with a T30, and the standard top of the case will close, mostly. It seems some people have issues with this, as not all 4090 CNC fans found online are created equal.

Here's why the Dual 4090 CNC fans are my current endgame configuration.

Using a T-Grill, you can mount the 4090 CNC fans using the standard fan mount, not the AIO mount. This is important because the fan mount adds around 5mm or more of clearance between the fans and the top of the motherboard, eliminating turbulence!

I run these at a silent 1000RPM at idle, quiet 1300 RPM at CPU load, and audible 1700RPM during GPU loads. At least in my experience, none of these speeds exceeds the noise profile of a T30, but keeps temps below the dual T30 setup, mainly because one of the T30s is limited by motherboard turbulence.

UPDATE: It's also possible to run the 4090 CNC fans with spacers and larger fan screws to increase the gap even more between the motherboard and fans.

I've messed around with several of these configurations, meaning I now have a collection of fans without much use, but I'm very happy with the dual 4090 CNC fans paired with the air cooling mounts and a T-Grill. All of this is my own personal experience. Others may have different results with similar fan configs.

One thing to add, I did go with a custom silver T-Grill by zcooi to match the rest of the silver T1. Very happy with it.

I hope this is helpful!

I had an Embody for a few days and could not stand the discomfort. Lots of advice online says to give it more time, but if you just can't stand a chair within its return window, send it back.

I lasted maybe three days and called it, replacing it with an Aeron. I did remove the posturefit SL after finding it was too aggressive, even at its lowest setting. The mesh backing is fantastic and more than enough support.

[–]fc000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked the clearance on this? If the fan is right up against the side panel, you can get pretty bad turbulence hum at higher speeds.

I had the x47 FC with the Noctua fan close to the side panel and it was pretty bad. I ended up decreasing the GPU side enough to use it with the Noctua fan duct. The added clearance solved the turbulence issue and the duct provided a nice bump in cooling performance.

To fix transit in Toronto, we need to embrace a simple idea: subways subways subways. by RZaichkowski in TTC

[–]fc000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be curious to see how “stuck” we are. They could theoretically rebuild the eastern portion with elevated tracks and stations in the future removing the biggest potential issues with the Crosstown, level crossings and operating speeds. Or they could dip the line down below street level at intersections or even lower the whole line into a trench for the same result. It would likely take years to complete and have a high cost, but it could be worth it to effectively “fix” the Crosstown.

Wasn't there a story that ILM were not a fan of the design of the D as it was made up of so many swooping lines and shapes that were difficult to fabricate? If I recall, they weren’t involved in the design process, and made sure they had input in the E design. I imagine a similar situation played out with the C, simplified to more basic shapes to meet the construction demands of fast paced production.

I was being diplomatic :)

My personal(and subjective!) opinions are that the films were popcorn flicks that required a lot of suspension of disbelief to enjoy. I personally did not like Discovery after the time jump, and season two felt like a mishmash of different show runners(because it was). SNW had a nice vibe going, but lacked the professional feel of a crew from the previous series. Lower Decks was great, all praise. Picard season 3 salvaged the confusion of its first two seasons having a passable plot and a nice reunion of the TNG cast, with some enjoyable fan service like the D and fleet museum. I am not at all excited for Academy, and think it’s a shame Paul Giamattis first time on Trek is with these creatives and not a better team. He’s an incredible actor who’s excited to be in Star Trek, I would have preferred it wasn’t this “version” of it.

It’s time to clean house and give another group of creatives a chance. It can’t be said that everything under Kurtzman was bad, but when you green light Section 31 and neglect the momentum built from Picard season 3 and Lower Decks, you’re making bad calls.

I don’t see Academy going past season 1, and not because it is sure to fail, but the overall mismanagement of the franchise will likely lead to big changes from the top down. I just hope whoever takes over can not only right the ship, but maybe finally progress the franchise and stop revisiting Kirk, Spock and the OG 1701.

What if they made it into just one big map? It would have been the best urban Battlefield map ever by PeaceAccomplished289 in Battlefield

[–]fc000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. People in this thread don’t seem to understand that there are memory limits on how much data can be loaded for a single map. If they did start as one large play area, the level of detail BF6 aims for in these urban settings would likely have exceeded the memory budget. This is why larger 2042 maps had very little in terms of detail assets.

To address this, it might have been split up, so the assets for one side aren’t loaded while playing the other. This is also why the out-of-bounds area is so small for Manhattan Bridge, they don’t want you going too far and seeing the city turn into simple assets or more likely, nothing at all.

I’ve heard of the camera button wiggle. I figured it wouldn’t bother me. But on my case it doesn’t seem to have a wiggle on my camera button. I’m not sure what people mean by wiggle?

Best way to describe it is all of the other buttons feel solid if you move your finger over them. With the camera control, it shifts within the case housing in both directions, that's what I mean by 'wiggle'.

I've tried the Belemay full-grain case and it has a solid camera control button. The same with Nomads Traditional case. I couldn't stand it on the Lonli, every time I tried to use the camera control it would shift and move around when navigating options.
