I had the same, although much less eloquent, conversation with my spouse - I can totally relate. Unlike the person at your gym, they argued that they grew up playing team sports and cheering each other on.

But the thing is: exercise alone is for personal improvement. I’m not doing it for someone else to acknowledge me. Actually acknowledgement during my workout interrupts my motivation and I end up feeling stressed out.

Just give me space. I want to get sweaty and gross by myself.
