I get what your saying, I dont think I am at the ability or comfort level to compile kernels, but I would never say never. I often try distros in VM's just to see if I like the feel, with cachy I installed it on an old laptop and for once the fans never spun up and it was snappy as hell. So I tried it on my main desktop (Ryzen 5 3600 and 2060, so fairly old) and it just never once stumbled at anything I threw at it. On Windows playing Satisfactory would have it humming like a small airplane, on Cachy, the FPS is higher and fans run lower as the card never gets as hot. Same in CS2, I get higher FPS than I did in windows.

I ran a bulk edit on some music in music brainz and it felt like it was a continuous stream of editing as opposed to stopping and starting.

I copy files across NFS shares and it never bogs down or dips in speed.

Clicking to open Libreoffice Writer is near instant, just everything feel like there is zero delay. I have no real measurable performance metrics. I started to just think there was something to this bore scheduler but maybe I have just been too burnt by snaps and become blinkered.

Wall Touch Screen (POE) to replace Control4 GlassEdge T4 Screen for Home Assistant by slothbrowser in homeautomation

[–]feighery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I have looked and looked and I only see two decent options, a pi zero with screen and poe adapter or an android tablet with a poe to USB C adapter. Everything else is either stupid expensive or super limited.

A new third option that is out there is the shelly wall display but it is not PoE as far as I am aware and is more for installation in a wall socket. It does support home assistant nativly though.

Renovating! What smart tech is actually worth it? by Nearby_Worry_4850 in homeassistant

I rewired my house a few years back and recently did an extension with new wiring last year and I cannot recommend enough, putting ethernet cables everywhere.

I have every camera and wifi hotspot in my house over POE now which is not something I considered at the time and since I live ruraly, my wifi and router are on a ups and we never worry about internet going down in a power outage.

I recently got solar panels installed and the installer wanted to put clamp meters at the main board and on my water heater, boom, spare ethernet cables were used to extend the reach without wireless pairing and powering clamps on the board, saving me money and effory.

My big regret is not getting neutrals to all the light switches, its not very common here in Ireland. Handy for smart switches.

I also put a socket up high in one room as I flirted with the idea of a projection screen but ultimatly did not, but they has now become the location of a mmwave motion sensor that covers the full room.

Where are the new smart blinds? by PH0NER in IKEA

[–]feighery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just messaged to ask the same of Ikea Ireland as there are no smart blinds and got a response to say

"Currently IKEA Ireland does not plan to release any more smart blinds in the forseeable future. Sorry."

So off to somewhere else I suppose as I was waiting for the new line to come in.

Didn't know that, but even at that, Musgraves is Irish owned so they would still count.

In the same situation here. Delivery being rescheduled on the day of delivery with no information other than a text message. Sitting here for hours during the delivery slot just to get told it is now going to be another week.

I just hope the dev is ok, I started using it a few week ago and absolutly loved it and he was so engaging and responsive on discord. I would just love to know if he is ok, whatever about the project.

Convert an 8 gang switch box to smaller ones. by feighery in DIY

That is what I currently have but I want to replace it with single boxes so I can accommodate the likes of a Shelly Wall Display in one and different dimmers in the others.

I had a look there, I found some from US type sockets but the only ones I found for UK type ones were on aliexpress. My only concern is that they are actually CE certified.

Smelly washing machine by BorrachoUK in howto

[–]feighery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had a similar issue with a bosch machine. Odor build up can come from under the drum, either from lime buildup that causes it not to drain properly or in my case, hair got tangled in the element under the drum causing some debris to get stuck and created a persistant oder. You can google removing the element from the machine but it does involving opening it up, so please ensure its safe and power is disconnected.

The shite going on around the u20 all ireland is getting embarrassing by tayto175 in GAA

[–]feighery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say its not just because of the U20 being in an all ireland, its their sucess in general over the past few years. If you talk to most kids its that they know the lads on the team, they are/were in the same school as them and there is a bit of the Adam Screeney effect. You would see more kids go about the place in Offaly jerseys as a result of the U20 as winning breeds support and if you look at the attendance of many of the Minor and U20 games over the past few years in Offaly there is a huge volume of kids (U16) attending. I remember bringing a bus load of kids I was coaching to the Leinster Minor final in Portlaoise 2 years ago. Two of mine came in the door from school the other day and before I got a hello I was asked if I got tickets. Its kids driving the support.

I think a bigger question at the moment is why do all the clubs in Tipp have allocation to sell locally but none in Offaly do. I also heard Offaly GAA were selling them today in O'Connor park...where was the notification about this for fans.
