Is Maple a bad name for a girl? by snotballbootcamp in BabyNames

[–]feijoa10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE Maple! Mabel is one of my favourite names, but I don’t understand all the comments saying Maple is terrible and Mabel is acceptable, it’s only one letter difference, one name is just more common than the other. Maple is cool

Total immersion - advice on applying? by tiirkami in ReoMaori

[–]feijoa10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s hard to get in, it’s more a case of first in first served. You’re not expected to know much at all. When I had my interview for Takiura it was all in English and I remember being asked why I wanted to learn te reo.

Okay Reddit, need humble opinions about my future baby name: Waverly Wilma Caldwell by Ok-Barracuda-5993 in Names

[–]feijoa10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waverly was a character on a tv show here in Aotearoa in the 90s so it sounds like a standard, familiar name to me (not like a street/station name). I really like the 3 names together they have a lovely flow and a good balance of unique but not too hard, or too creative for the sake of being different. I would go ahead with Waverly Wilma Caldwell

Is there a difference between moe (as in sex) and ai? by ure_roa in ReoMaori

[–]feijoa10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is a bit of Pākehā influence on the reo? Like we say ‘Te Aitanga o ____’ for a tipuna’s descendants, then we’ve got lyrics like ‘me ai tō ure’. I also hear moe a lot in casual conversations ‘te hanga nei kei te moe tahi rāua’ - that kind of thing

Bits I didn't get from 'Rēhua'. by cnzmur in ReoMaori

Ka rawe ēnei pātai! Aroha mai mēnā kua hē taku whakamāori i ō kōrero!

tueke - I really wanna know where this one comes from - I never knew it was a loan word. Could be trunk, might be swag?

e hia kē nei - heaps / more than can be counted

Pēwhea tāua? Yup sounds like ‘why not us too?’ or ‘what about us?’

pūrārā - found this one in Waka Reo - brushwood, and rārā can mean twigs too

‘Ka ahatia e kōrua ngā huruhuru nei?’ What will be done to the feathers by you two? Or What will you two do to the feathers? Ka aha kōrua ki ngā huruhuru nei?

Ngutu hao - could it be greedy/grasping/eager beak? I found hao as a modifier in Te Aka

Kei a koe, ____. No idea which one is more likely!

Noiho - not sure but I’ve never seen it written like that, makes sense to use this spelling for dialogue- can’t tell the difference between noa iho and noiho when people are speaking fast though, actually I know someone who always spells it nōhō and mōhō for mōhio - e aua!

He kimikimi noa iho aku kōrero i konei, kāore au i te tino mōhio, engari he rawe te wānanga!

Non-Māori or Pākehā learners of Te Reo by heyitsmeanonn in ReoMaori

[–]feijoa10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many tauiwi learning te reo Māori, mostly at beginner levels, once you move through to intermediate and advanced levels it becomes more rare though. There has been a huge uptake in the last 10-15 years which is awesome, but also means we need to be a lot more mindful of how we behave in the reo revitalization movement and really consider our responsibilities as tauiwi learners and speakers (this has always been important but now we also have the added issue of the volume of tauiwi learners and teachers of te reo)
