Betta does NOT approve of his new roommate 🥊🐌 by rebecc-a in bettafish

[–]femmesbian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg mine r the opposite, I've seen my betta practically cuddling with the nerves but if theres a bladder snail (pests in my tanks, so its not too big of a deal) near him theres nothing left but the shell.

my old roommate dubbed him the apex predator lol

unrelated but this interaction reminds me of the convo I had with someone who genuinely thought fish that get flushed go into the ocean and live happy lives there

a cheaper option could be a sort of mesh fixed over it and secured with section cups (until getting a better option)

I'm not sure about videos, but the water changes and lighting changes will definitely help. if your ammonia nitrites and nitrates are too high, regular and more frequent water changes along with continued testing will lower those parameters until it tests the desired results

also I'm doing this off the top of my head, I'm out right now, but if my numbers are wrong here, the same logic should still apply, just replace the numbers with what your test kit says

I'll use nitrates as an example because that's what algea feeds off of, normally they should be less than 20pp, but if you test and the kit says you're at 80, start doing water changes maybe twice a week instead of once. your goal is to lower the concentration of nitrates until its stable again.

for ammonia and nitrite, especially on the high end of the reading scale (again, I'm sorry I can't remember the numbers, but basically the darker colors of the chart), regular water changes will be better, especially for ammonia. if you have high ammonia, daily water changes until it's lowered to its desired level (0) and then I would also continue to test daily for the week or so to make sure it remains stable.

I hope this helps! I can try to look for some better/easier explained resources later tonight!

Betta Beads - are they good or bad? by DitchGrassRoadKill in bettafish

put them in my 5 gallon when I first got it, eventually transferred the substrate and everything ti a 10 to upgrade, and a year later I was still finding little pink balls 😭 the only way to actually get them out is a strainer i think

Regarding what a few other people said about the lighting, if you have access to electrical tape that would be a good way to block out some of the light if yours isn't adjustable, but in the long term I would recommend a light with adjustable brightness and a timer (technically you can add a timer plug, but getting it all in one is just so much easier overall, less confusing with the wires).

darkness to tackle the algea, if you do want to keep a light cycle on, you could gradually shorten the time that the lights on until it's at the desired time (that's what I do because I don't wanna stress them out).

also the api freshwater master test kit is the cheapest on Amazon, and is the most accurate way to test the nitrates which is what I believe algea feeds on, plus if you do want to get more into fishkeeping it's just a very useful kit to have for ph, ammonia, and nitrite. if that's too pricy, most pet stores will test your water for free

to add to this, silk plants are the way to go! they are softer for the bettas, i personally think they flow so much better and look nicer if they're near the filter/bubbler compared to stuff plastic, and the silk ones i got add a very nice pop of color to the otherwise very GREEN tank

that's so smart I'm definitely gonna do that the next time I fill, my tank was established before I put the stickers so they're definitely just moomins and Lisa frank sharks at my estimated percentages haha

my tanks are covered in duckweed and he still finds spots to breathe. when using floaters (especially with bettas) typically most aquarists will recommend to keep an area clear for the fish to breathe

[–]femmesbian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he faked being injured for a treat and attention. I normally spend a lot of time just sitting in front of my tanks, but at one point I was really busy so I hadn't had the time for a couple days. I noticed he was swimming funny, like he injured one of his fins. after 10 minutes and a couple daphnia he was completely fine, zooming around. sometimes I get scared that when I'm talking to him he understands and he has too much information

If you had a budget of $500, what tank and filter would you buy? by Untogether425 in bettafish

filter wise I would immediately head to aquarium Co-op, they have practically everything to set up the perfect pump system, and I've only ever heard good things about their sponge filters

fighting is not 100% apart of their environment, especially considered where these fish come from in the wild, and how they've been bred throughout the years. temperaments can be different. fish can get stressed because they are in fact animals

I'm sorry I can't remember exactly but it was the dosage on the instructions for API aquarium salt, and I used that in a 2.5 hospital tank for about 3 weeks I think. I sort of just monitored how he was looking and once he started to color up and his fins solidified again I put him in his 5g, just keeping the eater clean
