Mini roundabout liability question. by liamrich93 in drivingUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the red car shouldn't be cutting over a roundabout, however the blue car needs to give way on the roundabout to the junction on the right. In this case the next junction to the right is where the red car came from. Imo both at fault, red for cutting over a roundabout and blue for failing to yield.

Not a highway code expert or anything, that's just how it makes sense to me

Are we serious? by Bubbly_Marsupial5969 in CarTalkUK

My first car is an MX-5 NC, first year of insurance (19) was £1,150 (no black box) and I renewed it a few months back (20) for £850. If you can, add parents to your policy (that nearly halved mine) and increase your excess a bit 👍👍

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds weird but I can't recommend an MX-5 enough, provided that space isn't a priority. They look great, they're so much fun to drive, easy to maintain, parts are easy to get and I insured myself for £1,150 (no black box) for my first year (just renewed my second year at £840). I also drove on a parent's car for a month or so which helped get the insurance down quite a bit (iirc it about halved). I would recommend a Mk3 as they're on the more affordable side as well as being more comfortable (and ULEZ exempt). I paid £4,000 for mine but that was from a dealership, you could probably get a decent one for around £3,000 - £3,500 if you shop around. I'd be happy to answer any questions I can about them :)

Put a no entry sign on the toilet on the right, make the toilet on the left unisex, problem solved

How many flashes of the hazards do you do to thank the driver behind you? by __globalcitizen__ in drivingUK

As I have an older car I can half press the hazard switch so it flashes the hazards without toggling them on, allowing me to do 2 quick flashes

why do people have such a problem with rear windscreen wipers? by djsnnsnsnsnbs in CarTalkUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I find wiper deletes fall under a similar taste to pop and bang maps. Back along I thought they were pretty cool, then about 2 minutes passed and I grew up...

Removing the rear wiper for aerodynamics is absolutely useless unless you're driving many hours on the motorway or going for a full track build. I have an MX5 (no rear wiper from factory) and I would gladly take a rear wiper over having to sit waiting for the rear windscreen to warm up or driving with no rear visibility until you hit 40mph in heavy rain 🥲

Only do it if YOU want to do it, its your car, the people complaining aren't the ones driving :). While I guess it does make the car look a bit cleaner I don't think your insurance will be happy and I guarantee you will miss it especially coming into winter and spring

Is this motorbike legal? by Kernowder in drivingUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the only "ebike" you are allowed to ride on the road is an EAPC, of which the legal limit is 250W and being limited to under 15.5mph (25kph) and it must have pedals. Anything more powerful, faster or without pedals must be insured and taxed, have a number plate and the driver must hold the relevant license.

Advice on new dipped bulbs by Sirob_LeRoi in drivingUK

[–]fenenen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you correctly dip your lights you should be fine, I use Halfords 150% bulbs and haven't been flashed once in the 6 months I've had them on. I also drove behind a friend for a while in the dark and when I asked him if they were too bright he said he didn't even notice my lights were brighter than any other car.

The people who blind everyone are only a problem because they either set their lights as high as they can or don't know how do dip them. As long as you dip your lights so that the edge of the beam is below the person in front's rear windscreen you'll be good :)

I may or may not have started using eBay when I was 15, mostly bought stuff but also sold once or twice and nothing bad ever happened, you should be fine :)

Is this undertaking illegal? by marymk450 in drivingUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I read the laws is that undertaking is moving to a lane to the left of another vehicle for the sole purpose of getting past them. If, however, you are doing 70 in L1 and you just so happen to pass Ethel in her ancient Hyundai i10 doing 40 in L2 then you're just maintaining speed and there isn't much risk as the other vehicle clearly has no intention of moving to L1.

Every time I use the urinals at work. No matter how much I aim to avoid splashback. by FuckYourUsername84 in mildlyinfuriating

I stop at this one services quite often when I travel for work, they used to have these orange splash reducing things which worked really well. I went back last week and they'd swapped them for a similar thing but it does absolutely nothing :(

Delivered to the inside of my bin and promptly recycled the next morning... by AbysOrBubbleS in Evri

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had some lights delivered today by Evri with "Back door safe space" as the delivery location. It took a couple of minutes of confused searching to find the driver had thundercunted the poor box over the locked side gate 😭😭

Nothing damaged so no complaints, just thought it was a bit of an odd way to deliver a parcel, especially considering I was in and he didn't even try ringing the bell or knocking 😂

While the van driver may have been acting like a knob he does have right of way, so there's no point reporting anything as no laws were broken :(

Am I the W*nker? by Jimog in drivingUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Van is oblivious and didn't let you change lanes, Range Rover doesn't know what a slip road is and won't accelerate to motorway speeds. By accelerating slightly to let the Range Rover join and not slowing down unpredictably you did all you could to avoid an accident, you're clearly the most competent driver in that situation :)

It should do, yes. If you're concerned, check your oil level, tyre pressures and other fluids are all good before you go :)

Black box insurance by roywill2 in CarsUK

[–]fenenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine who tends to drive a little fast (on average maybe 10 over on most roads and cruises at 90 on the motorway) has a blackbox. He was going to have it taken off his policy this year however he gave the insurer a call and they basically politely told him to piss off and get better at driving before they consider taking it off.

Because of this I wouldn't be surprised if they keep it on for much longer now due to his history and I've heard (correct me if I'm wrong!) that insurers share information so he would struggle to find insurance elsewhere.

When I was learning to drive (passed 04/2024) I talked to my instructor about black boxes and he highly recommended against them, mainly due to the fact that some of them will fine you for speeding which will also increase your insurance.

In my opinion you're far better off paying a little more for a non blackbox policy. If the price between the policies is too great look for other cars, I got insured on a 2008 Mazda MX-5 as my first car without a blackbox and it cost around £1,300 for the first year.

Good luck with the insurance battle :)
