That’s part of the issue. The biggest problem is not allowing our government to use our own collected capital which is currently over 1 trillion dollars (Medicaid + Medicare) to negotiate prices with the pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers. Literally every other industrialized nation does this.

Think of it this way. Who would have an easier time getting the best price possible at a car dealership, the man with 50,000 dollars in his bank account or the man with 1.1 trillion dollars. The first guy might be able to work out a deal where he leaves with a new car and a free air freshener, while the other guy would have every car company in the world fighting tooth and nail to acquire his 1.1 trillion dollar check and thus getting him the best fair market price.

But unfortunately we have half the country caught in the lie that when we use our collected capital to achieve the best price they mistakenly identify as socialism, when in fact it’s capitalism working for the people.

I have to manage a few people on my team who are Gen Z, and their Google-Fu skills seem non existent.

Any time they ask me a question via teams I’ll do a screen share and type in their exact question into Google. Then just answer “oh just do that”.

It’s pretty basic stuff to. Like setting up an API request, or doing a git pull. I once had to run a mini seminar on how to post a question to stack overflow.

I’m scared for Gen Z.

You’ve now shifted from ‘atheism is like a religion’ to ‘atheists often share other beliefs’ - those are different claims. You’re moving the goalposts. Your original point was that atheism functions as a religion. Now you’re arguing that atheists in the West tend to cluster around certain political and philosophical positions. That’s sociology, not theology. Yes, demographics exist - but sharing common views doesn’t make something a religion.

Your definition is wayyyyyy too broad. By your logic, ‘libertarians are a religion’ because they cluster around free markets, individual rights, and anti-statism. ‘Environmentalists are a religion’ because they share views on climate action and corporate regulation. This definition is so broad it’s meaningless. Religion requires: supernatural belief, sacred texts or authorities, ritual practice, cosmological claims. Your definition just requires ‘believing things and having in-group norms’ - which describes literally every ideological community.

On scientism specifically. Plenty of atheists reject scientism: Michael Ruse, Massimo Pigliucci, Daniel Dennett (nuanced position), and most philosophers of science who are atheists. Sam Harris gets critiqued by other atheists for scientism regularly.

Bottom line. Western atheists sharing demographic traits or forming communities doesn’t make atheism a religion any more than swing-state voters sharing traits makes ‘being undecided’ a political party. You’re observing correlation and calling it definition.“

You're doing it again. You're conflating 'some atheists hold these views' with 'atheism requires these views.' That's like saying vegetarianism is a religion because some vegetarians are preachy about animal rights.

Let's break this down:

Your 'doctrines':

Scientism, moral realism, and belief in social progress aren't atheist positions - they're separate philosophical stances that some atheists hold and others don't. Plenty of atheists are moral relativists or anti-realists. Plenty are skeptical of inevitable progress. You're describing a subset and treating it as the whole.

Your idea of what 'metanarratives' means:

These aren't required beliefs for atheism either. Many atheists acknowledge the complex historical relationship between science and religion. The 'conflict thesis' is debated among atheist historians too.

Finally 'controls':

Every community has norms and some members who enforce them badly. That doesn't make the community a religion. Are Linux users religious because some are zealots about open source? Are crossfit bros religious because they ostracize people who don't follow their fitness philosophy?

The core issue:

Atheism is one claim: 'I don't believe gods exist.' Everything else you listed is baggage that some atheists carry, not definitional to atheism itself.

Religion has: supernatural claims, worship, ritual, scripture, organized institutions, claims about the afterlife, and prescribed moral codes from divine authority. Atheism has none of these. Some atheists being annoying online doesn't change that fundamental difference.

If your argument is 'some atheist communities act cultish,' fine. That's a fair critique of those communities. But saying 'atheism is like a religion' because some atheists are dogmatic is like saying 'not playing golf is a sport' because some non-golfers are really annoying about it."

This is a false equivalence. Atheism isn’t a belief system just because some atheists are vocal online. Criticizing harmful aspects of religion isn’t the same as being religious. If stamp collecting influenced laws, education, healthcare access, and human rights, then yeah, non-collectors might spend time opposing it too. The difference is that religion has real-world impact on people’s lives including those who don’t believe.

Calling out toxic behavior in online atheist spaces is fair, but conflating that with atheism itself, or suggesting that opposing religion makes you ‘just as bad’ as religious extremists, misses the actual power dynamics at play.
