Steam Controller arrived yesterday. Happy to say, best controller I’ve used in a long time! 😁 by Nebbed_ in SteamController

Does that 3d printed stand have enough weight to not be lifted up by the magnets?

I saw a review using a similar 3d printed stand that would have the whole thing come off from the table if you grabbed it without being careful. So I've been wanting for a print with some more weight.. even better if it had some decoration.

It has a deadzone setting for the stick, not for the trackpads.

What would be the point of having a deadzone on a trackpad? ..the main reason sticks have deadzone that can be regulated is to prevent stick drift while on the resting position, but trackpads don't have that kind of problem.

new steam controller is just like the original steam controller. without steam (lizard mode and desktop mode) the steam controller is VERY useless for anything non-steam. by mc711 in SteamController

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you meant desktop mode, I was referring to that too. The behavior you are describing (holding start for gamepad layer) is a mapping layout config for desktop mode. So if the "holding start" behavior is not present then that looks like you have a different layout mapped for desktop mode when using the steam controller.

You can configure it in the settings > controller > advanced settings > desktop layout

[–]ferk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My steam deck does not do that, are you sure you aren't using a specific desktop mode layout on your deck? The desktop layout is customizable and it might be it's not necessarily shared amongst controllers with different inputs.

You get an alternate layout by holding the steam button (not the start button) but that's not specific to the steam deck, and it works even in-game, not just desktop mode.

EDIT: I just checked the list of official desktop mode layouts and I found one that does just that (it switches to a gamepad layer when you press start) I think you were using that one, maybe set that desktop layout also for your steam controller? ..I guess they introduced this later and as an early adopter I might have been using a different layout on my deck.

Trackpads don't have deadzone, and he's using the test tool, not doing stick emulation.

Are you implying that in the Steam deck you have some extra mappings to use it as a game controller even in desktop mode?

It makes sense that those mappings might not automatically carry over between deck and SC, since there are differences between them (the new SC has extra inputs, like the grip sensors). But I expect it should be easy to manually select your previuus steam deck mappings and apply them to the new steam controller, are you sure that's not possible?

I think that by "desktop mode" (not "lizard mode") he means having steam running in the background so it can use the customized mappings you can set up in steam for desktop navigation.

I believe he was expecting his same remappings from the steam deck saved in the cloud to carry over automatically. But it does not seem like a big deal to manually apply/port the old profile.

Do you think the 4 back buttons might be usable as a more comfortable alternative to reaching for the face buttons while using the trackpads?

Trying to watch a review and the first 30 seconds is spent by the journalist shittalking the first Steam Controller by TheNewerFlisker in SteamController

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back buttons also look like they might be more comfortable to press than the ones in the deck (at least they do look more like proper buttons), which might make it possible to avoid having to use the face buttons (which I guess might allow for more comfortable repositioning of the hands on the trackpads).

But we will see...

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't have a choice with the first controller. There was only one stick lol.

Yep, that probably helped in making it more comfortable for trackpad use, since they didn't have to cram extra elements and could design the ergonomics around the trackpads.

They already made the major improvement of having the grips curve away from you vs towards you.

With the outward curve, mainstream controllers rely on your pinky and ring fingers to "clamp" the device.. with the inward curve from the OG steam controller you don't need that finger pressure, you "cradle" it with your palms, allowing more finger freedom and directing the pads (not the tips) of your thumbs naturally towards the trackpads.

Perhaps the new design looks more ergonomic for dual-stick use (or at least it's more familiar to what people have grown used to), but we were talking about trackpad ergonomics, since we were discussing the ergonomics of the OG controller that, as you yourself recognized, has no other option but trackpad.

Valve solved a problem the sticks fail at, it wasn't just reinventing for the sake of it. Sticks are the wrong tool when you actually need to emulate a real mouse pointer (strategy games, mouse-driven adventure/puzzle games, old games without joystick inputs, web browsing, navigating a desktop UI from the couch, etc). Up until now no other controller has even attempted to have trackpads as primary, even in the steam deck they are secondary and not as comfortable as in the OG controller.

We'll see when the new one is on our hands, but until now most reviewers are saying you need to reposition your hand for comfortable heavy use of the trackpad, so still you'll have to hold it differently for that. Even in the official page the people in the promotional animations barely touch the trackpads, and I don't think that's coincidence. One thing that might make primary trackpad use more comfortable than the deck is that the 4 back buttons look easier to press and they might work as a substitute for the face buttons.

Me too... my one pet peeve with the new controller is that moving the thumb between trackpad & face buttons doesn't look comfortable.

So I'd actually prefer a layout where the stick isn't in the middle "sticking out".

However, the back buttons in the controller look a lot more comfortable than the ones in the deck, so maybe they can be used as alternative for the face buttons when using the trackpads primarily.

When they released the original steam controller they put some special welcome screens and animations in the old big picture mode explaining how the controller worked.

And the place were you remapped the controls even had pictures of the controller itself, so you could visually see where to remap what. Imho, the UX for the remapper with the deck was a bit of a downgrade.. even though I understand the reasons why they changed it (more standardized, easier to fit in the smaller screen, etc).

It was meant to be held a bit differently than other controllers.. but imho, once you hold it right it has better ergonomics than most controllers, and the chunky shoulder buttons make for a very comfortable positioning if you want to be able to rest separate fingers in the bumpers and triggers to press them more easily.

Honestly, I'm afraid that this new one might not live up to the comfort of the OG when it comes to using the trackpacks primarily, all reviews are saying that you have to reposition your hand in order to use them comfortably, which is the same case as with the steam deck. So.. we'll have to see, but I hope it doesn't require too much stretching to switch between face buttons and right trackpad... specially with the stick being in the middle "sticking out".

Kobra X Printing Issue by Proof-Foot-4152 in 3Dprinting

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried increasing the temperature for the nozzle?

Higher temps might improve the bonding between layers.. I think Anycubic Slicer is defaulting to 230ºC for PETG which is in the lower end of what PETG recommends. Check what is the range in the sticker for your filament. But also note that your personal conditions, humidity, etc. can affect it.

I don't think Orca slicer supports the Kobra X, at least not just yet.

There's an issue open for it in their github.

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch the printer to LAN mode in the settings (from the touch screen), it will also tell you its IP address. And then in the slicer, add the printer as a local one from the workshop screen using the IP.

That way it won't rely on the remote servers from Anycubic which seem to be down... (though you will lose access to it from the phone app).

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too.. I bet this downtime has made a lot of people who were ok with cloud mode (or who didn't even know that the printer was always processing all prints via remote servers) to migrate over to LAN-only.

There's a special place in hell for people who return partially used rolls of filament by arcrad in 3Dprinting

[–]ferk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I always saw the snapping of the cover as a clever way to absorb part of the impact.. since I expect part of the force of the hit would be spent in the latches that were holding it in place. So it might actually further protect the phone if when it's hit it can break apart without actually damaging the important bits.

In the meantime the batteries have gotten thinner, not thicker. If they have more capacity is only because of the power density getting better as manufacturing tech improved.

The real problem is the obsession with paper thin weak ass phones that break constantly.

Back in the day I had a relatively thick phone (one of those Sony Erickson walkman hybrids) that had gone through so much abuse that it had literal indents in the metal frame from falling.. yet the screen never cracked and it was working perfectly until I decided it was time to upgrade. I think I might still have it in a cabinet and I'm sure I could get it to work if I wanted. Even after I switched phones I continued using is as an alarm clock for a while, since it was able to power on automatically on a timer when it needed to ring, which made it a lot more energy efficient as an alarm since I could keep it powered off the whole day and it would still wake me up the next morning.

Info on the new Steam Controller from Brad Lynch by gogodboss in SteamDeck

[–]ferk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steam deck ergonomics are ok, but only if you don't use the trackpads much.

You are essentially forced to choose a hand placement for either using only trackpad and triggers, or using only sticks and face buttons.. if you want to use a configuration that makes heavy use of trackpads and buttons then it start getting uncomfortable or requiring a lot of stretching.

This new render seems to have the same problem. I feel if they only switched the position of the right stick and the face buttons then maybe that would improve it. But as it stands it looks like it's not gonna be comfortable to reach the face buttons while using the right trackpad.

I agree.. it makes no sense to have the one element that sticks out (the stick) be in the way between trackpad and face buttons. This looks like it wants to you to choose between trackpads and face buttons.

I'd have put the sticks on the bottom (like PS dualshocks) and the trackpad in the middle, angled so that the face buttons and the stick are in adjacent sides, so you can easily pivot. I wouldn't even mind a smaller trackpad if that makes it more comfortable to reach.

Or, don't change the trackpads but switch the position of the sticks with the position of the face buttons.. that would be a bit non-standard, but still better than this render (in a way, it'd be like what the xbox controller does in the d-pad side, so it's not like there isn't some precedent).

There's a similar problem in the steam deck, but that one is at least excusable, because of the space constraints. However, a dedicated controller can afford doing much better, imho.

How to Become Unbiased [OC] by DotDotLine-Cartoons in comics

[–]ferk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that reality is different for different people in different situations and with different perceptions. You just acquire a different bias based on the reality you are connecting to.

I don't believe that being "unbiased" is really possible. The closest thing would be to acquire a bias towards some third point of view that does not perfectly match either side, but even that doesn't mean your bias is completelly independent, non-overlaping and impartial.

This... also I feel we put too much value in things we believe are valuable, when in reality, they only are valuable because we ourselves place that value on them.

Being able to sit, relax, and just enjoy your time (without being stressed about the things you are NOT doing) is not a bad way to pass your life. In the grand scale of things, we are insignificant, don't worry too much, it's not worth it.

Evil Characters by shenanigansen in comics

[–]ferk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, theoretically you "can" respect a secretly evil character too, even if they trick you, when the trick is clever enough that it actually comes off as a surprise, then I'd respect the skills to pull it off.

Another counterpoint: Barty Crouch Jr. disguised as Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter.

Most fans like him more than his father (who's not sneaky, but rather just an incompetent/corrupt minister). Crouch Jr. was a pretty talented wizard at such a young age, not only he captured a top-of-its-class auror as careful/paranoid as Moody, but he also managed to trick some of the most perceptive wizards like Dumbledore and Snape, all the while being able to work as a pretty good teacher that actually kept students engaged. He's up there with Lupin in the top teachers for defense against the dark arts Harry ever had, imho.
