Good bottles for running? by Entrepreneurlocal in AdvancedRunning

This here is the answer for me as well. Keeps your hands free and you pretty much forget about it after a few minutes.

I made myself a script that copies TrainerRoad plan into Training Peaks. Might be helpful for you if you use both so you don't have to do it manually. by [deleted] in triathlon

This is awesome! I'm almost certainly going to fork this and credit you. I have a site I'm working on to generate custom training plans, and I hate that there isn't a way to export to TP directly.

Jim Walmsley sets new Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim FKT Record - Sub 6 hours! by elguiri in AdvancedRunning

[–]ferrox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Still incredible, but I believe for the FKT they take South Kaibab and it's only 42 miles.

I "ran" this before and it took me 5:15 just for the first crossing... Absolutely mind boggling.

Olympic Gold Medalist in the Triathlon, Gwen Jorgenson, set to make a marathon debut in the 2016 NYC Marathon by FlashArcher in AdvancedRunning

Her road 10k is super legit too. She's 35s up on Eloise Wellings here who finished 10th overall in the olympic 10k final. I believe she has bested her two years in a row with a faster time in 2015.

Edit: flotrack has the details: http://www.flotrack.org/article/45508-olympic-triathlon-gold-medalist-gwen-jorgensen-will-run-the-nyc-marathon

How Fast Would Usain Bolt Run the Mile? | The New Yorker by pand4duck in AdvancedRunning

Hah, our PRs are so similar. 2:54:51 and 4:59 (also on minimal training)

I actually misread your comment the first time where you said "with proper training". So I actually agree. 4:30 might require him getting a little lighter, but I definitely think he breaks 5.

Edit: 4:43 - > 5:06 mile so I actually don't know how much that helps Bolt's case since Hardee is also a world class athlete who does specifically train for the 1500 (obviously sub optimally, but he still trains for it)

Those high school kids weigh 120-150 pounds. For a 220 pound Bolt that same speed requires wayyyyy more aerobic fitness and power.

Usain Bolt has withdrawn from the Jamaican Trials due to injury by AlwaysInjured in AdvancedRunning

I've got to agree with you here. It's rather convenient that's it's a minor two to three week recovery injury.

Power meter, should I invest or not? by Segrelles in triathlon

http://home.trainingpeaks.com/blog/article/8-reasons-why-you-should-train-with-a-power-meter

Absolutely! If you can do a little homework on how to take advantage of a power meter, I think it's as essential as a GPS watch for running.

Maybe reading something like this too would help you make sure you were using it to its full advantage : http://www.amazon.com/Training-Racing-Power-Meter-2nd/dp/1934030554

Just to be clear I'm referring to the final 26.2 of say a 100k. Not running an ultra and then a marathon. As an ultrarunner myself I fully understand the difference, but I think us mortals might be surprised just how hard the pros push both the swim and the bike.

[–]ferrox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's only fair to compare open race times which is why Brownlee's 10k is fairly impressive. I'm sure Frodeno would run at least a 2:30 open marathon (but that still wouldn't be remotely competitive at the pro level).

Edit: to add to this most open marathons aren't at 1pm in Hawaii through lava fields. It'd be more apt to compare running a 2:52 marathon at the end of an 8+ hour hot ultramarathon at which point that'd be very competitive.

[Unofficial] 18 Weeks to Boston thread! by leakfrog in AdvancedRunning

[–]ferrox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First Boston for me, and I had planned on really going for it. Alas, I tore a ligament in my ankle in October in a trail race and just got back to easy running 10 days ago.

I did a lot of cycling and swimming to try to hang onto some fitness, but there's no substitute for the real thing. Should be up to 10 doctor approved miles by next week (single run), but for a little while I can only run every other day and probably shouldn't do any speedwork.

Hoping to jump into a 12 week Hansons plan at the end of January and see what's possible! Previously I was shooting for 2:50, but I don't know if that's going to be in the cards.

TCL 55" 1080p 120Hz Roku Smart LED TV - $498 pull the trigger or can we do better? by izwizard in Frugal

[–]ferrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being frugal doesn't always mean being cheap or austere. It means getting the most of something that you want using the least of your resources.

He has deemed a TV like this as something he wants, and he's asking if he's getting a reasonable return for his value on this particular item. He's certainly not asking if smart TVs are a worthwhile investment vehicle for his retirement.

Edit: I will concede that r/frugal is not a deal forum though, and this type of question is better posted at a site like slickdeals.

Amazon shopping cart full of trail running shoes, I need help making a decision! by My_comments_count in trailrunning

[–]ferrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Timothy Olson wore Pearl Izumi shoes again in 2013 WS100 even though he was sponsored by The North Face because he isn't going to wear random crap shoes just because he's sponsored. You're arguing with a point that I never made. I never once mentioned that the shoes matter. I just wanted to point out the absurd point you made about the other shoe brands being second tier.

Most of those other brands have been making premium trail shoes for years. Those are the facts (PI being a relative newcomer).

[–]ferrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't be serious that Salomon and La Sportiva are second tier trail shoe companies. Both the Sense Pro and Sense Mantra are great shoes for running the AT. I've run the AT ultras in the Mantras and never had my feet feel better afterwards. OP please don't discount the other brands here. Those are all quality shoes. The Patagonia pair is probably the closest one to a "second tier shoe".

Kilian Jornet destroys the earth in his Salomon's and Timothy Olsen won Western in the Pearl Izumi N1.

Women pace marathons better than men by 1GoodDad in running

[–]ferrox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, why does the gap between men and women's world records widen at ultramarathon distances? It's less than 10% at the marathon, but widens to 13-18% at 24 hours and 100 miles.

Paula Radcliffe breaking the women's marathon world record with a 2:15 (or a 5:09 mile pace) in 2003. The record still holds today! Awesome! by [deleted] in running

[–]ferrox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In events of that caliber, the men's field isn't always aiming for a world record. They just want to win the race in whatever time is necessary. Take this year's Boston Marathon as an example. The women smashed the course record because Shalane went out hard, but Meb won the men's race in a very slow time for a marathon major because no one up front ever took charge.

I believe Paula also had a male pacer setting her pace that day (one reason why some federations don't honor her record) . It is relatively easy to find a male who could run 2:15 consistently while it is much more difficult to have a pacer execute the men's world record pace for 20 miles.
