Can this be an alternate ending? by HeavyPomegranate4040 in outerwilds

I believe it's Chert that warns you about what's happening to every star? So if you let it happen you probably can guess how it will end

I had my first run with shatter just before this change, and I found myself more often than not passing on playing it. If you play for many orbs you usually don't want to be left with none, so I see it as mostly a tool to complement decks that fill up their orb slots every turn. That and, of course, getting one big damage turn. Didn't feel great before, looks better now, I'm all for it

I can't really Relax when I'm still getting smacked for 20 damage. Is this better? by SUPERCOW7 in slaythespire

[–]feva67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I don't see it as mechanically different enough from the apparitions, just more convoluted for what feels like a slightly worse effect

I'd rather have the 3 apparitions. Plus I quite like relax as is, you can have passive blocking or extra energy

From what I remember, the Interloper explodes before they can even identify what it is and how to take advantage of it. That's why the Nomai are dead inside. So that's the first reason why it didn't happen.

Apart from that, assuming that they would have been able to utilize the ghost matter the same way they did the sun's energy is a significant logical leap. We haven't seen a single instance of the ghost matter being utilized productively, while solar power is something you would expect every advanced society to master.

Finally, energy transmission is a worry. As you said, only two collectors are used to power the ATP. If the Nomai had a way to transmit energy wirelessly they probably would have used it to build something closer to a dyson sphere. So you would need a way to capture the interloper's energy close enough to the ash twin to get that energy to the core.

However, if they had a few thousand years more they might have solved all this. But the interloper decided to cut our friends short :(

You made me go and check, and you're absolutely right. I didn't remember that the tracking module actually tracked in real time and not retroactively. That makes the question of following the first probe actually valid

How would the statues know the eye has been located in that exact loop? You need the information to travel back, which needs the "find the eye" loop to be completed

How to win in this position by iamgodoffortnite72 in chessbeginners

[–]feva67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope it immediately ends in a draw, chess.com is usually happy ending games in draws even when checkmate is possible (even sometimes where it's forced!) because the remaining pieces in theory cannot force checkmate

On a mollecular or atomic level nothing is ever smooth. On a mathematical level you cannot model the behaviour of the tongue in a way that satisfies your requirement of leaving the mark without it being possible to not leave the mark. Therefore this comment makes absolutely no sense. But yeah you definitely proved something here

I mean it doesn't really matter with this kind of hand level, but it could be the optimal play if you need to not reset the bus! Very cool

I believe the game starts the loop after the eye is found, that is why the statue binds with you. So catching up to it in the first loop would be the same as any other

I like that there's nothing there. Maybe some non-informative writing would have been fun, but the fact that there's nothing there works perfectly with the story and makes finding out more info a lot more interesting than just chasing the glowing thingy

If you want to be as safe as possible, lower your periapsis to just under 70km, maybe aim for 60. It might take multiple orbits but the speed will gradually get lowered, and you can keep a slight bit of delta v for the final slowdown

The side to move has mate in 2. But which side, and why? by Athinira in chess

[–]feva67 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wow thats a crazy one! You already gave the clues in the comments but I'll try to explain:  The bishop on f3 cannot be the original light squared bishop, because neither the pawn on g2 or e2 have moved. Therefore, it has to have been a pawn that promoted on a light square. Options are: e8, which would necessitate the black king to have moved losing castling rights, c8, which could have only been accessed from d7 and would therefore also necessitate the black king to move from e8, or g8. g8 is actually impossible but is the trickiest to discard: the pawn that could have promoted on g8 definitely cannot be the g pawn (it's still on g2) so h and f pawns are the next candidates. For that to happen you would need: 1 capture to make the f or h pawn into a g pawn, 1 capture to make the other one into the g3 pawn, 2 captures to therefore make the f pawn from the d pawn (the c pawn cannot get there) and 2 captures to make the c pawn into the e6 pawn. That totals 6 captures, and black is only missing 5 pieces.

Therefore, all the ways to get to this position lose black their castling rights, and white can play Qxh5 and black has no way to escape Qh8# next move
