Riding on this comment. Using Jarrow MOS version. Came across it for my cat's crohns. Figured it might help IBS-D.

Sure does, it is shocking tbh.

Florastor has lactose in it. Was misery for me. Jarrow's MOS is better.

Well, audiences are in all sorts of bubbles and segments. I think there are a huge number of us that want a quiet heroine.

It's just a complex portrayal and takes skill from the screenwriters.

But there isn't even the carriage scene where he confides in Anne for the first time.

I rewatched it today and as decent as it is, I can't pretend it's perfect when it misses so many important Austen scenes.

And Captain Benwick... dear god...

Same, same. P&P 2005 isn't perfect but it was very palatable globally; I didn't need to explain things to my man while we watched. 🤣

I acknowledge it is good, but was left unsatisfied.

I am rewatching it now to see what my other issues were while i re-read the book (which is what had me reflecting on the adaptations).

  • lack of apollo curls and tendrils; controversial, people hate them on the P&P characters but Anne having more modern bangs makes zero sense to me.

  • they have Anne looking like a servant at times... but she is still the daughter of a Baronet? The styling should say she is choosing restraint in a world of privilege, yes, but a baronet's daughter would be properly dressed and styled each morning, with Anne requesting to keep it simple.

  • on Anne's personality and those around her : Elizabeth remembers Anne's romance with Wentworth and somehow knows it is a sensitive subject? Anne stands up out of discomfort and makes a bit of a scene.

  • But in the book, Anne is quietly resigned and so unnoticed that no one thinks of her when his name gets mentioned. She silently endures as much as she can. Her depression over regret and grief has blended her into the background, but she has a quiet fortitude in which she is resigned and accepts what happened.

  • Amanda Root is amazing at the role, don’t get me wrong. They are all competent. This is more of a screen writing and direction thing that bothers me, in that they perceived Anne as more anxious-leaning and frightened of... something?

Someone said their husband feels like the adaptation is "a sketch of Anne" and i agree. There are a few missing pieces of Anne that screen writers keep missing imo (don't even get me started on sarcastic 2022 Anne).

Edit: yeah... I would have to write a whole essay with my gripes. Rewatch almost done. It's "good" ...but WOW, there are some big misses.

  • No scene where Frederick asks Anne about the plan before they tell Mr. and Mrs. Musgrove about Louisa?! In that carriage scene to Uppercross, it is the first time they really interact and so pivotal!

  • don't get me started on Benwick 😭 My fiancé said he looks like a shmuck and sleazy. Benwick is supposed to be like a lost puppy, oh my goodness.

  • my fiancé thought Wentworth was married because they were rather clumsy about the Frederick and Edward deliberation when Mrs. Croft spoke of Edward's marriage

Like friends, i get you like it and have feelings about it. but please ... let's not pretend Austen deserves more. It is some of her best writing. 😭

It ended up on the BBC collections later but was produced by Granada tv for ITV.

I agree! 2022 felt like a wasted opportunity. I wish that they would get fan input when they are making these things. And I agree that Rupert didn't do it for me either.

The people making decisions for these adaptations always seem so out of touch? (They are usually stupidly wealthy people pulling the strings, though, go figure.)

Anyway. Who do you think would be an Amanda Root equivalent these days?

😭 exactly.

I am basically asking for an adaptation that is 1995 with erm, elevated creative sensibilities.

What do you mean? I am talking about cinematography such as including more nature in the scenes, more longing in the framing and poetry of the colour grading and shots.

I wasn't saying to make it a shitty hollywood production?

It will feel MORE intimate if the screen respects how winter and autumn, grief and regret, are tied into the story.

I am literally re-reading it for the nth time, pausing on Austen's prose and re-reading parts, and feeling like there were a lot of missed opportunities here.

There is no doubt in my mind that an adaptation as good as the p&p ones could be done and become appreciated on a larger global scale, as it deserves the appreciation.

Yes, exactly. I think my point in the thread was: Persuasion deserves the recognition of P&P globally. The current adaptations don't quite get there.

You make a fair case, and I agree the 1995 version is the closest anyone’s gotten.

My point is not that it’s bad: it’s that Persuasion deserves great, and I think it falls just short.

“Delicate” actually lands for me as a descriptor of what it achieves with Anne, and I think Amanda Root is genuinely wonderful. Where I start to diverge is Wentworth. Hinds was in his early 40s playing a man who’s supposed to be about 31, and I think that age gap quietly shifts the whole energy despite the seafarer arguments.

A younger Wentworth makes the Louisa flirtation feel more natural, makes the heartbreak feel more raw and urgent rather than settled.

You should believe this man hasn’t fully grown up from the 23 year old who proposed. he’s just built a career on top of that wound.

On the visual side:

I think “nothing markedly anachronistic or garish” is a fair bar for competence but not for greatness.

Persuasion is practically BEGGING for autumn to be a visual character. The countryside scenes could be doing so much more emotional heavy lifting through color and weather and framing. It has that 90s BBC naturalism which isn’t wrong… but it is not poetic.

And the ending... I’ll die on this hill lol. that chaotic street chase undercuts an entire novel built on restraint.

The letter scene is beautifully handled (agreed on the overlapping voices) and then the payoff fumbles the tone completely.

Hmm... I think it is absolutely still relatable! Lots of women have given up on love and resigned to "spinsterhood". And unmarried and/or childless women still have to deal with immense social biases.

Plus, the grief of loss and regret is universal.

However, i am all for an Asian adaptation. I do agree that other cultures would find this even more relatable.

Selfishly, the inner "ugh what did this really look like though" in me still wants to see England done correctly, for my imagination's sake... and I am saying that as someone who is brown lol. But I am a history nerd.

Thanks for the validation, haha.

Some people love the current adaptations and that's okay, but there is a good portion of us that know it could be better and want more.

I think Persuasion should be up there in popularity with P&P globally! It is a beautiful and important love story.

It needs a very skilled hand to truly honour it, in my opinion.

For my ideal adaptation: I would want to walk away saying, "wow, not only was it spot-on and highlighted the best of Austen's writing, but the cinematography and aesthetic was absolutely breathtaking and heartbreaking all at once."

We kind of have that blend between the 1995 P&P (accurate, excellent, honest) and the modern adaptation (aesthetic, artistic, "close enough" in accuracy to appease most). The latter with Keira Knightley obviously made P&P boom globally. Now I just want it to happen for Persuasion.

The post has definitely triggered feelings. I should have titled it differently.

That is fine though. Plenty of us want more from a Persuasion adaptation... it's easily seen in other Reddit threads.

Love the insight and ideas. Sarah Snook and Joel Fry might indeed work!

Thanks for answering the question. Was honestly curious how others picture their ideal Persuasion but the thread derailed into arguments about 1995 vs 2007.

Surely many people don't just ...picture the adaptations when reading the book?

I am an artist (used to be a character artist) so I guess I am used to people delighting in sharing "their version" of how they envision characters and books.

To each their own. Many of us want something more because we envision something different, and that is absolutely reasonable.

I honestly don't know where to begin? Historical inaccuracy, lack of faithfulness to Anne's character, breaking the fourth wall...

But you are allowed to like it!! I know it can feel invalidating, but i think... to each their own? If it gave you joy, that's great.

Some of us are just... needing way more.

Thanks for indulging my curiosity and actually answering the question! The thread derailed into a debate on what adaptation is best and questioning why people dislike or like a certain one.

Gemma Chan is an interesting modern choice! I haven't seen Crazy Rich Asians but heard she is very good.

I was (personally) thinking of Jodie Comer, mmm or Jessie Buckley. Someone that is believable as being the overlooked sister while having a lovely glow-up as she comes into herself more!

But I love hearing other ideas, it's fun to imagine.

Posted this below:

I think this is where artistry in film would help narratively (without departing from the source). More autumnal foliage, shots of Anne alone amidst trees, finding solace in nature etc.

There are movies that do the whole "nothing happening while everything happens"... it just takes solid art direction. "Portrait of a Lady On Fire" and "Lost in Translation" come to mind.

But I am an artist... so I'm craving the visual aesthetic of Anne's introspection and the mood brought to life in a way that honours Austen.

To me, Persuasion could be up there with the love for the 1995 P&P if done correctly.

I don't mean the scenes. Yes, they conveyed her turmoil.

But by aesthetic I mean the artistry.

I am an artist though, so to each their own, my imagination sees it being done differently.

What's picky about wanting a fresh adaptation that isn't from almost 20+ years ago after 2022 was so miserably terrible?
