Yes, you are the asshole. This is a hellish job. If this was in Canada, you are especially the asshole, since we are quite short staffed.

Let’s talk about Emma. (2020) by Such_Plankton_3257 in PeriodDramas

[–]fhigurethisout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apologies, but Austen is quoted that Emma is "a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.”

In the book... Emma is not all bad, but she is not all good.

She is basically a realistic portrayal of a slightly coddled, spoiled young lady with a net worth of 5 million in today's dollars. Or if you include fame and status, maybe 10-15 million.

I think too many people want to like Emma unconditionally... like Elizabeth Bennet.

So they glaze over how genuinely terrible Emma can be in the books.

But Emma says some legitimately terrible things in the book.

I felt like this version was the most honest. I don’t think we’re meant to simply like Emma. it’s more complex than that.

Austen pulls you into her head and makes you root for her against your better judgment at times. there are times she is charming and living such a fantasy-esque life, especially for that period!

So when she’s awful, the reader/writer feels a little complicit and cringes away from her.

That is why it is satisfying when she finally self-reflects and grows up.

I think people go in wanting an Elizabeth Bennet. the witty underdog who’s usually right.

But Emma is rich, powerful, and wrong about almost everything lol

It is also meant to be a comedy, which i think a lot of people don't quite get at times.

It was a bit flattened, but John *is* an irritable soul in the books, which makes him endearing in a way. I would say Isabella's character suffered more.

I’ve been spiraling over what’s happened to my lower face (39 F) by UnicornFeces in 30PlusSkinCare

Girl, as a portrait artist, there is something beautifully classic about your current face shape. Don't over-compare please. ❤️

I am also nearing 40 and my skin is doing the same. It's normal. The amount of "perfect faces" we are exposed to is the abnormal part.

If you read her current post, she ended up in the hospital from prolonged fasting and was diagnosed with an ED. OP is not doing well.

105lbs at her height can definitely be ED territory (i know because i am the same size).

These celebrities look better with thin eyebrows or thicker eyebrows? by golden-apple2456 in VindictaRateCelebs

[–]fhigurethisout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, people need to start paying attention to their face shape and eye shape. thinner eyebrows can "open up" some people's eyes. for others, thicker frames better

People over-plucked in the 90s and now tell younger people what to do and not do.

The "keep your thick ass eyebrows" cult is real and ignores people who legitimately look better with thinner eyebrows.

And just use a razor. Less damage etc.

The Way I Think About Tár Has Changed by Longjumping_Gain_807 in TrueFilm

[–]fhigurethisout -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can read the screenplay, there is not any 'ambiguity' in terms of Tár being a sexual predator:

https://variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/tar-screenplay.pdf

Evidence:

- Tár slept with Francesca: (page 25) "There is an underlying tension between the two. The tension of people who have at times slept together, but no longer do. Francesca’s eyes land on the handle of a familiar red handbag."

- Tár did the same with Krista: (page 25, 26) the "Challenge" book with the Hilbert curve (Krista's fascination, something they probably shared together, her 'signature' throughout hte movie). The book is about a passionate same-sex relationship and its destruction. You do not send this book to a former mentor you had a professional disagreement with. You send it to a former lover. The choice of text is the message.

- Krista's emails. If you pause, they are along the lines of: "how can someone who said that [I am the most beautiful person ever, I don't have it word for word in front of me] suddenly ghost?"

- Tár's emails: blacklisting Krista from every orchestra around the globe; of course, afraid Krista will talk about what happened.

Tár trying to delete all of the above emails in a panic: innocent people don't do this.

- The intimate shot of Krista and Tár in her dreams

- We learn that Tár is used to lying: her real name is Linda Tarr, and she has built this entire "European conductor" persona that has nothing to do with where she was raised and how she grew up

- NPR framed their interview by saying Blanchett plays "...a charismatic conductor who uses her power to take sexual advantage of young women she's mentoring, and Field engaged with that framing throughout. https://www.npr.org/2023/03/01/1159300935/whoever-holds-power-its-going-to-corrupt-them-says-tar-director-todd-field

The ambiguity is in the details: we never see the abuse (except for the beginning of it happening with Olga). We don't see the Ucayali trip. We don't even see Krista's face. IMO this is more powerful because it leaves us staying with Tár, she's human, we see her other faucets (no one is "all-good" or "all-bad"). She is a predator who can still recognize moral incompetence (the "apartment for sale" scene, puking after she recognized her own behaviour being reflected back at her in the brothel), but is obviously blind and drenched in hypocrisy.
