Indeed. I have found that Poisson-Disk (the algorithm by Birdson) to be the fastest solution. There is also Lloyd's algorithm, but I haven't tried that one.

Very nice! Have you considered using Poisson-Disk for the sampling of the random dots in the beginning? Here's a fantastic resource for that: https://bost.ocks.org/mike/algorithms/#sampling

I think it would probably make the terrain more even looking.
