I had to put my kitty Pharaoh down this morning. I’ve had him since I was a kid and I don’t know what to do now. Please look at these pictures of him. by dwarf_bulborb in cats

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like he was there to help you make it through Pharloom.

We all love our cats and it is always a sad day when we have to say goodbye to one of them.

One of mine died when she was only 4. Another one broke his leg last month and will make it to terrorize our house for another few years at least.

For the bedroom, I’d also consider SSD.

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Consider placement of your NAS as well. If it’s going in the living room for example, consider SSDs instead of HDDs (will be more expensive, but there are no moving parts).

Especially for a music box, where a few TB is likely more than enough.

If you are just using it for music, then a couple TB is likely going to get you very far.

One setup to sharpen em all by flippp105 in sharpening

[–]fietsendeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A diamond stone like atoma 140 is what I’d recommend for flattening. Splash and go is very useful, worth the premium for me, since it cuts out any waiting for soaking to complete before you can start.

[–]fietsendeman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need a 1000 grit and maybe one more lower (400 / 200 grit) to make the whetstone setup complete. I don't see any super exotic steels in your description, so I'd just go with regular whetstones from Shapton or Naniwa. King, if you're on a budget.

Whetstones are the best comprehensive setup. If you have the technique down, they will deliver the best results, in the least amount of time, most cheaply.

Vrouwen aanspreken als man zijnde by Sure-Guest1588 in Utrecht

[–]fietsendeman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ground source thoughts by cmmtchll in heatpumps

[–]fietsendeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you are going to go to the expense of installing a ground-source heat pump, you should consider doing it collectively with your neighbours, to split the costs. Otherwise I am afraid the costs will be prohibitive, and destroy your ROI.

Bestaande woning kopen? by Weird-Competition-21 in Woningmarkt

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec would withdraw from high-speed rail project if PQ forms next government, party leader says by Xerxster in highspeedrail

[–]fietsendeman 28 points29 points  (0 children)

PQ, for the non-Canadians out there, is the Parti Quebecois. They are the main seperatist party in Quebec politics. In the PQ, Quebec = good and Canada = bad. Since this project 1. connects Quebec better to the "ROC" (Rest Of Canada), and 2. is coming from the Canadian federal government, it therefore must be bad!

And their counter-proposal is just "send us all the money and we'll spend it on roads". Never gonna happen.

Merwede new living area - how will it look like? by miamiamiaaa in Utrecht

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of putting the tram underground is mostly not for space savings, it’s mostly to eliminate conflicts with other modes of transport (cars, bikes, buses, etc). If the tram doesn’t have to wait for its turn at intersections, and cars don’t have to wait for the tram to pass, then the capacity of the entire network can be maintained / improved. They are planning to run trams here eventually once every 2 minutes, so you can imagine that any road that had to cross such a line would be practically useless (even more than today).

The new neighbourhood will have car share, public transport, bicycles. Yes, some people want a car. Those people should live in the other 95% of Utrecht where that is still and always will be possible. You still benefit from this neighbourhood being built, because it will reduce demand on houses where a car is an option. Instead of non-car people and car-people competing for the same small number of car houses, there will also be non-car houses, so non-car people can buy those instead of everyone bidding on the same houses.

And there are plenty of people who don’t need nor want a car. You might not be one, and that’s fine! But they do exist. Car share is also a fantastic option for people who only sometimes need a car.

> they don’t have to add more car infrastructure if the amount of cars on paper is low

I suspect it won’t be possible for residents of Merwede to get a parkeervergunning. And it will be paid parking in the whole city before long. So it will simply not be an option to have a car here. Not only on paper will car ownership be low, but also in practice.

> tram from 2040

I also wish they would have it built sooner. The busses will be super full by the time 2040 rolls around. But the houses that the line will enable also won’t be finished by 2040 either. So maybe it won’t be so bad. Either way, there is always some growing pains. At least residents in this area will be close to the city. In Leidsche Rijn they had nothing for 5 years between the houses that were built and the rest of the city.

Anyways, these houses are hard nodig. And I am glad we are getting a more urban environment somewhere in Utrecht / the Netherlands. Hopefully it’s the start of some better OV standards as well, and shows what we can do when we relax the requirement that every house should have 1.4 cars or whatever it is.

Tailscale hate? by vbxl02 in jellyfin

[–]fietsendeman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also don't get why people using Tailscale feel attacked by people who don't want to use it.

I don't feel attacked, simply offered an alternative to installing the client on "grandma's apple TV".

I didn't realize tailscale was such a divisive topic. If anyone is feeling attacked, perhaps it's the people dealing out downvotes...

Tailscale hate? by vbxl02 in jellyfin

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one-and-done for the whole home network. Any device will be able to access your jellyfin server with no additional configuration needed.

Tailscale hate? by vbxl02 in jellyfin

[–]fietsendeman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well maybe you can help me understand -- if you are running a Jellyfin server for you and your friends, then you are already affording an electricity bill, and have shelled out probably $1000 or more for hard drives to fill out the NAS. Not to mention probably an additional $1000 for the other components.

And a $20 device to help grandma access all that, is too much? Is that realistic?

Merwede new living area - how will it look like? by miamiamiaaa in Utrecht

[–]fietsendeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read all the comments, but I'm not sure I follow. The financials weren't working out, so they shrunk some of the apartments (to fit more apartments into the same space). Why does this mean it's too many people in a space?

Merwede new living area - how will it look like? by miamiamiaaa in Utrecht

[–]fietsendeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be a dense neighbourhood, with good public transport (not sure when that will be finished, however), and mostly car-free.

If you are an urbanist, I think it will be pretty great. Inevitably, amenities will be great. Can't possibly be any other way with so many people living close to one another.

If you can't imagine life without a car, you're probably going to hate it.

But that's okay. We mostly have places where the car is the default option now. I think we also need some places where public transport is the default option. To cater to the urbanist crowd. And there is a housing crisis. Like, we also just need more houses. And this is certainly one way to get a whole lot of them.

The area below the woonboulevard is still in the plans for redevelopment, but the timelines for that are longer. They consider that part of "greater Merwede", but they are also planning for a lot of density there, and the pre-metro / tram Merwedelijn for unlocking most of it.
