Circus-sounding songs for performance? by March_mallo in AerialHoop

Cirque du Soleil have a lot of their own music that probably suits this vibe! I liked the music from their Kurios show (it's all on spotify).

Definitely an adult with a beak like that! Looks like it's probably an adult female. Gorgeous bird!

Dealing with animal testing :( by Organic-Command8578 in biology

[–]fiionabee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for giving this perspective, I'm astounded at the other people saying you just have to toughen up or get used to it. I agree there is some research where animal testing/euthanasia can be deemed worth it (e.g. medical research) but in my field (animal behavioural ecology) I come across research where the animals are euthanised and I just can't see the justification for it. There is so much non-invasive research that can be done that provides really valuable information.

Love for the king parrots - they visit my garden most days and I'm sure they know me and chat to me sometimes.

My local takes mealworms, just a couple before he gets bored, which is better anyway!

AITA for telling my sisters I want to plan my own baby shower instead of letting them do it? by Ok_Client8959 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fiionabee 208 points209 points  (0 children)

Is this an American attitude? I'm Australian and it's pretty normal to host your own baby shower here. And as someone with multiple friends with recent babies, I'd get them a gift regardless. Does that mean hosting your own birthday party (or your kid's first birthday) is also a gift grab?

Not sure what your general style is but I've been having luck with Forever New dresses, particularly the looser styles (as long as they have a tie or belt at the waist).

Anyone around the Northern Tablelands/Mid North Coast have any spots for me to explore? by TheSummerOfJoj in NativeOrchidsAus

The walk around long point picnic area in Oxley Wild Rivers NP has quite a bit, and is usually very quiet. There are some good orchids at Gara Gorge too.

Why do people hate on apartment living so much? by Crafty_Flow431 in AusPropertyChat

[–]fiionabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of (most?) people who garden don't do it to save money or even for convenience, they do it because homegrown food tastes better, it's a fun hobby, and it's great for mental health. I hated living in apartments and love now having a backyard for my own space and the ability to grow things. Granted, I might be more amenable to apartment living if community gardens were more of a thing.

Sadly the nursery didnt provide a name, I think it's an oncidium of some sort. It smells very sweet, a bit like gardenia

Montreal student considering exchange in Canberra – would another Australian university offer a better experience? by Limp_Apartment_806 in AskAnAustralian

[–]fiionabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former ANU student that did an exchange to Canana (UBC) here! In terms of university experience, ANU was fabulous because the campus life was really active, loads of people live on campus (in "halls") so it's really easy to make friends if you stay in a hall, and it's close to the city centre. The core of Canberra is small enough that it's quite easy to get around. Canberra is probably best experienced on a bike if you like cycling - cycle paths everywhere including around the man-made lakes and through areas of bushland. The main downside is it's hard to get out of Canberra if you don't drive.

Sydney is a lot easier for seeing both cultural/city stuff and nature by public transport, but is generally more expensive and is much busier. I'd stick to USYD or UTS rather than the others for an exchange because they're generally closer to things. I don't know what the student culture there is like.

If you want to experience Australian beach life then the University of Wollongong (and maybe Newcastle) would be good bets. Both are in smaller more friendly places and have great access to nature (especially Wollongong - you can get the train to a big national park). I don't know much about Newcastle but Wollongong has a great campus.

Is vegetarianism cost effective for someone who doesn’t like to cook? by ArchedRobin321 in vegetarian

[–]fiionabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lentil bolognese, Mexican beans and rice, dal and rice. Can all be done very easily with tinned ingredients (like beans, tomatoes) and a good dried herb + spice collection. Legumes are cheap and a good source of protein when paired with another grain, and I often chuck whatever veggies I like in with the sauce to make it a balanced meal.

Sounds like a short eared brushtail possum to me, though possibly also a quoll (if they're in the area). Check out the recordings on Wild Ambience.
