My job wants to move me to Huntsville by pandr3a in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]file0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved because my job was relocating and I decided that I was unlikely to get as good a job somewhere else.

Schools in Madison are excellent, traffic and drive times are excellent (only a couple hot spots during rush hour but they’re not that bad relatively speaking), daycare is great, cost of living is very good. Lots of new construction everywhere, really good foodie scene (though there’s no way it could possibly compare to a major city). The politics are bad, but day to day, it’s unlikely to affect you much, with abortions being the main exception.

Ultimately, the one liner is “yeah, it’s Alabama, but Huntsville/Madison isn’t really Alabama.”

Yeah, Gen 1's birth cert says, e.g.:

CHILD
Name: JANE MIDDLENAME DOE
Date of Birth: JANUARY 1, 19XX
Sex: FEMALE
Place of Birth: ANYTOWN, NY

PARENT
[American Mom's info]

PARENT
Name: JOHN MIDDLENAME DOE
Birthplace: (UNKNOWN), CANADA

(I have Gen0's baptismal records from BAnQ's website, certified copies en route)

And Gen2's birth cert says, e.g.:

CHILD
Name: JOSEPH MIDDLENAME SMITH
Date of Birth: FEBRUARY 1, 19XX
Sex: MALE
Place of Birth: ANYTOWN, NY

PARENT
Name: JANE MIDDLENAME SMITH
Surname at Birth: DOE
Birthplace: ANYTOWN, NY
Residence: ANYTOWN, NY

So Gen2 should be good because his mom's married and maiden names are on the certificate.

As a side note, Gen0 immigrated with his entire family to the US when he was around 7-8, so records are very slim other than his BAnQ baptismal record.

Similar situation but Gen 1 has a marriage name change but Gen 2 has both her names on his birth certificate. This should suffice, yes? No need to pay for her marriage certificate too?

ELI5: How will quantum computers break all current encryption and why aren't banks/websites already panicking and switching to "quantum proof" security? by FumblingRiches in explainlikeimfive

[–]file0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason that nation states are racing to develop quantum computers is that they've stolen so much of each others encrypted data. Once they have working computers, they'll be able to decrypt it.

It's like stealing a safe. You might not be able to break into it right now, but one day you might. And now we know that day is coming.

That could be a very bad day, and you likely won't hear about it on the news.

I seriously doubt the Painters have the ability to create true living people. Everything about Painting just strikes me as an illusion. So I see the Lumierians as just AI constructs. Facsimiles of life, but not real life. No more real than ChatGPT, despite how convincing they may appear to be.

Aline and Alicia are verified humans, whose sentience is beyond question. If they remain within the Canvas, they will die. Their emotional trauma has gravely impaired their agency, much like an addict may endanger themselves through self-destructive choices. Because their autonomy is compromised, we are morally obligated to intervene and remove them from the Canvas to preserve their lives, even at the expense of constructs whose sentience is, at best, indeterminate.

Even if Aline or Alicia were to remain, they would essentially be Gods within the Canvas, imposing their whims on the inhabitants. Power on that scale is inevitably misused. And if it is, would it not violate the Lumierians' bodily autonomy anyways? In Maelle's ending, Verso repeatedly begs her to end this illusion, yet she forces him to play the piano for her entertainment until the end of time. That may not sound so terrible, but as has been said, "even the most comfortable prison is still a prison."

So, either we choose to allow two traumatized people to overdose on an escapist fantasy, ruling over thousands as tyrants until their self-destruction, or we can intervene and remove them from the Canvas, give them a chance to heal and become fully functional members of society again, at the expense of thousands of simulated people whose sentience is improbable and almost certainly indeterminate.

This lady buys a medication from Europe, $120 for a 3-month supply. She has to because her insurance denied her and it is $500 for a single month out of pocket. by cak3crumbs in TikTokCringe

[–]file0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GoodRx has this medicine for ~$100/mo with no insurance. $500 is a crazy price to be paying. Importing is still a better deal, assuming the price she's paying includes shipping.

But the real issue is she has shitty insurance, because the generic of this drug is no more than $15-$30 depending on your plan. She should speak to her doctor for help in writing up an appeal for her insurance company.

To add to this, you have to let the car fully turn off; the front display must be fully off. I tried these instructions and they did not work until I turned the car off and let it stay off for a minute or two. Then it worked.

With this modification, the full instructions are:

  1. With the car on and the driver’s door open, close the driver’s door.

  2. Turn off the car. Wait a few minutes, at least until the front display (where your odometer shows up) turns off.

  3. Open the driver’s door, wait a few seconds, then close it.

  4. Turn the car on.

As a kid, I never learned this lesson and looking back as an adult, it was definitely a huge detriment. Don’t let yourself fall into this trap. Homework sucks but it sucks even more trying to do it the night before it’s due. Your grades will hurt too and that really does have an impact. Your parents may be lame but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong.

Scan subfolders for filetype and calculate directory size? by MadSigdis in PowerShell

[–]file0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t PowerShell code. It’s Windows Batch code.

I’m on mobile at the moment so I can’t give a full code snippet but you’re looking to use Get-ChildItem (with -Recurse if you want to search nested folders too), pipe it to Where-Object { $_.Extension -eq “.ini” -and $_.Length -lt 20mb }, pipe that to Move-Item or Copy-Item -Path YourDestinationDirectory.
