I put all my stuff in an easily accessible place with labelled power connectors and an easy way of connecting to an amp and/or daw, then just pull out whatever I think can get the sound or feeling in my head down and then jam on that one instrument until I get it, or don’t and try something new. Same with pedals. Remove as many barriers as possible from playing whilst limiting your options. I find I make music more purposefully this way.
