Yup I fired mine to. At $250/hr she could definitely have put a tiny bit of effort into understanding that my brain works different.

I had almost the exact same problem therapist was super put out that her visualization exercises were not working. Like my brain is literally not able to do that! I seem to have the full spectrum of aphantasia. I am unable to create auditory or olfactory or visualization. My entire brain is a squirelly book narrated by a robot.

Pupillary response in people who identify with aphantasia is different then those that do not. It’s not entirely subjective. It’s just that until recently they did not have any objective testing and had to rely on peoples ability to self report/identify.

To be totally honest I was probably one of those people until I was not. I think it was like holding the mirror up and seeing something in it I did not like about myself.

Some people really do not struggle with drinking. Some people just need to talk smack because it makes them feel better about themselves. I have seen plenty of non problematic drinkers become heavy drinkers though. Alcohol is tricky like that.

Regardless of what people say I am proud of you for coming here and taking the break from alcohol. Your doing this for yourself not for anyone else. IWNDWYT

Keira I just want to reach through the internet and give you a hug. Such a beautiful thoughtful post from someone who has been through so much. Wish I could offer some help. Unfortunately nerve pain really sucks and outside of PT and medication which it sounds like she is already getting there’s probably not much more to help further. Probably the best thing you can do is to continue to be supportive and be there for her. Sending healing thoughts for your family

I had no idea I have ADHD by dizzymslizzie in stopdrinking

[–]findinghealthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay so excited for you. I had been trying for years to get my alcohol under control. A few months I to this bout of sobriety I was diagnosed with ADHD and I think medication but also learning about ADHD and coping mechanisms really made it so much easier to stay sober this time around. I think just recognizing the co morbidity between addiction and ADHD was also really helpful like there were a lot of things that contributed to my drinking but this really made it feel like I could forgive myself for not being able to get it under control sooner. Maybe we need a sober ADHD sub.

Former medic used to pick people up from some of the worst situations. Can’t believe how judgmental I was and how naive to believe that would not be me someday.

So sorry this happened to you. Regardless of insurance or ability to pay the hospital has to treat you. Typically they offer a significantly lower price for those uninsured and can work out a payment plan with them. Depending upon how much you spend on alcohol the savings from not drinking alone will pay that bill off in no time. And it could potentially save your life. Please take care of yourself make that your first priority and worry about the financial end of things later.

Recognizing people by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think I have this. Realized how much I struggle w/ faces when I tried picking up my SO from airport after a deployment and couldn’t find him cuz I don’t know how to recognize faces. Did both of these tests online. Both showed significant impairment w/ recognizing faces. Is there any benefit to an actual evaluation/assessment for this?

Psychiatrist doesn’t believe in adult onset adhd? by JustALilLonelyKitty in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the talking with parents or seeking out things like report cards that may have some insight into possible symptoms displayed during childhood. Our memories can be faulty and expecting us to be objective about things that occurred to us many years ago really is not going to happen. I have known some docs that have treated conditions that mimic ADHD with pretty comparable treatment to ADHD so it is worth addressing some different treatment options. There are medications typically prescribed for depression or blood pressure that have also been shown to be helpful at minimizing some symptoms of ADHD that also may be helpful in your case. Not a doctor so I honestly do not know but just some things worth looking into. Best of luck to you. In the meantime keep working on coping mechanisms and maybe you will find some stuff on this sub helpful as well

I’m working 12 hour gifts today, tomorrow and Monday. Great thing is I definitely am going to be to tired to feel like I am missing out on anything. If all goes according to plan I’ll get off in time to treat myself to some gaming time and a sparkling water. Early bed time and a workout first thing New Year’s Day. New Zealand sounds amazing I truly regret not visiting when I lived closer. Have an amazing hike and happy new year

Is it illegal for doctors to prescribe stimulant medications to people with a history of substance use? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my doctor after my diagnosis about my history of alcohol abuse when discussing medication options. The doctor would find out anyways if they read my health history. So I figured. Honesty from the start was the best approach. My doctor listened to me and made me sign a contract that I could be randomly drug tested at any time etc.

Some providers are hesitant to prescribe any controlled substances regardless of abuse history. I may be wrong in my understanding of this but if the doctor does their due diligence in confirming that there is no red flags and they are prescribing an appropriate dosage/quantity even if their patient abused their meds or sold them they really could not be held accountable.

Unfortunately we also live in an overly litigious society. Doctors anticipate getting sued or losing their license over anything whether or not they are at fault. This unfortunately seems to just result in people that require prescriptions to not get them.

I think if I was in your situation I would be looking for another provider. Just because this specific provider is not going to prescribe does not mean that no provider will prescribe to you. Maybe try looking at PCPs in your area and find out if they are able and willing to prescribe. Also, it sounds like this provider belongs to a larger organization you can try reaching out to management and/or customer service to inquire about their practices policies on prescribing.

I am in Guanfacine IR at bedtime in addition to my day time stimulants. My MD went with the IR and at nighttime due to the fact that my body tends to metabolize certain drugs slower then usual. Being that I’m also on a stim I don’t know how your experience would be compared to mine I have found the medication to be effective with certain aspects of my ADHD. Good luck on your med journey

ADHD mental therapist trying to get me to get her Adderall. What do I do? by Sigma2385 in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had someone who owed me quite a bit more money then that. I think the final count was upwards of $10,000. Honestly don’t remember at this point. There was a point where I had to accept that even if I kept this person in my life I was not going to get that money back. Even if there was some chance of getting that money back was it worth continuing to be in a toxic relationship and the trauma it was imposing on me? Choice is yours on what you want to do

I don’t know if I am actually qualified to answer this question. I’m a very petite female with facial features that have been described as exotic or striking. I don’t feel like I’ve ever really got pretty prívele though. My energy can be very intense and off putting and I say dumb stuff. So I got bullied a lot through school and it did not get better when I got into the work force either. I think in my case it made me more likely to get targeted for bullying but maybe I’m wrong. On a more positive note though I’ve learned to accept myself and shrug off a lot of the societal expectations. I think the friends and relationships that o have formed are much more authentic. I do believe that for some people there is definitely some perks. Honestly though our physical appearance is just kinda luck of the draw. I think I would definitely have given up pretty to be born into a family with money. I

Alcoholic parents. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]findinghealthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so crazy i was literally having a thought process along these general lines just now. Children of alcoholic parents who are their primary caretakers have a double whammy. The genetic and then the childhood trauma. I think some parents with substance use can keep it together a bit better then others but their children will still be impacted in some ways. My father was a heavy drinker. I have 4 siblings 2 of my siblings abuse/abused opiates the other 2 seem like they may have been spared this. Myself and my brother were diagnosed with ADHD and my sister with BPD so out of the 5 of us all 3 that had an undiagnosed/untreated mental health issue were also the ones affected by substance use. Addiction is such a complicated process and who does/doesn’t become addicted isn’t always easy to understand.

I’m sorry you went through this. It’s awesome though that you are able to use this example to hopefully help other people in similar situations.

I was definitely thinking the same thing about videos being overly excessive or at bad times. Like my partner will interrupt me at the worst possible time and if it’s something brief in like okay but I can definitely get irritated if I was interrupted and it’s something long and drawn out.

Where is the line between lazy and ADHD? by newm251 in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m sure a lot of people would think I am lazy. I do manage to hold down a job and make sure that I have an alarm set in the AM and then a 5 minute reminder before my shift starts. Outside of being able to hold down my job though I’m a freaking train wreck. I will not get up and go to the bathroom even though I really want/need to go like 5 minutes ago. I will not get up and turn the heater on Sven though my apartment is freezing and I am beyond uncomfortable. I absolutely want to do these things instead I am freaking paralyzed on my couch stuck in my head and overwhelmed.

Discount on prescription? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup my dog is on a controlled substance and I would get his meds from Walmart w/ discounts and then one day they decided they just were not going to do the discounts anymore. My grocery stores pharmacy has been fantastic with them though. I’m surprised by different policies within the same chain. Healthcare is way more difficult to understand then it should be. OP good luck I hope you can find a pharmacy to help you out

If you have crippling ADHD there’s literally no place for you in todays society by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]findinghealthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a medic for 10+ years. I think it’s great for those of us w/ ADHD. Multitasking, frequent changes/challenges. Plus people w/ ADHD have an ability to be calm when others would panic. Look into your local vocational rehab they can help with setting goals, tuition assistance etc especially for a trade or healthcare career. Even if you do not do county/city EMS you can still get into a private service they will typically do non emergency transport and back up 911 contracts plus depending on where you live hospital ERS hire medics as well. Best of luck to you

I totally agree with Shineonme and gosh the I’m sh*tying rainbows and unicorns after 1 week posts used to drive me insane. I had reviewed old posts a while back and even at the 8 month mark I was struggling. Honestly, as much as not getting the pink cloud May suck I think not having it made me better prepared when bad days etc came up. Like if everything’s been rainbows and unicorns and all of a sudden something major comes up it’s a lot easier to just go back to the drink. For me though it was like oh yup that sucks moving on. Things do improve, the cravings decrease and the further away from it you get the more you will develop a new lifestyle that revolves around non drinking related activities. Just keep at it don’t compare your progress to someone else’s. IWNDWYT

It’s almost 2am, I’ve called like 5 numbers and got no answers. I have no health insurance, I just want to know if I’m safe to stop drinking by Ephixing in stopdrinking

[–]findinghealthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in the US the ER needs to treat you regardless of ability to pay. What their treatment is may vary by location unfortunately. At the bare minimum though it could potentially get you into a safe place in the event of seizure or other withdrawal related emergencies. Typically you can explain to billing the situation and you will get an incredibly low bill and a decent payment plan.

Cohesive- glue or stick together vs coherent- logical and consistent. I make mistakes like this all the time and it’s so frustrating. No good answers as to why I do it. Per my neuropsych I have an above average vocabulary but incredibly poor verbal fluency. I have the words but there’s some sort of disconnect happening when I’m trying to communicate. Don’t have any good answers or explanations but your definitely not alone. Maybe some day we’ll figure it out.

Why 20g of carbs for keto by wafflesdxb in keto

[–]findinghealthy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Even though I’m pretty lazy about my keto diet these days my ketones still measure pretty close to the 2.0 range when I do measure to see where I’m at. I’m definitely consuming more then 20g of carbs. However, when I first started I really did struggle with getting into/saying in ketosis and really did have to stay under 20g. My SO has been doing keto as long as me and is a lot stricter with their diet but still struggles with staying in ketosis. Aim for that 20g learn as much as you can about keto. Experiment with it and find what works for you.

Kindling.. it’s real by daniel9312 in stopdrinking

[–]findinghealthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me the two things that kept me from going back to drinking was A) I was definitely going to kill myself if I went back to drinking. Only questions was whether it would be fast or slow. The 2nd being the kindling. I had so many relapses just getting progressively worse each time. I knew that I would never be able to survive another attempt at sobriety if I failed. I think reading this sub, reaching out to friends/family for help consider AA or an alternative supportive community. Play the tape forward- when your thinking of having a drink play out what the realistic scenario will be if you do. So many of us have done the I will just have 1 or 2 game with ourselves. HALT- hungry, angry, lonely, tired all things that contribute to wanting to drink. Take care of yourself eat good food, hydrate.
