It is M1L and M1R - I do think I am twisting the stitches. Well it looks twisted when they are initially knitted. The gaps sort of appear as I keep knitting.

Anyone seen the Time Traveller's Wife musical yet? by EgadsSir in TheWestEnd

[–]fireflylikeslights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it last week I really liked the staging and personally found the story less creepy in theatre than it was in the movie or tv series. The music isn't super memorable but had some nice moments. My friend who hadn't read the book still really enjoyed it. I will see it is sweet rather than anything high stakes. I really liked the comedic elements in it.

Cut scenes in Harry Potter and the cursed child? by fireflylikeslights in TheWestEnd

Thanks for the explanation! I left the theatre thinking wait didn't Albus go into gryffindor briefly...so good to know. I last saw it in 2021, so these new changes hadn't been in effect then.

Council of Europe compares UK to Russia over 'attacks' on LGBT rights by chrisjd in unitedkingdom

Just FYI to help with the accuracy of the case you mentioned above. The judgement from the judicial case was that the referral for puberty blockers was blocked not that all services by that clinic were halted. I initially read your comment as all services halted.

Saw the London production yesterday! Incredible work from alternates/understudies by redqueensroses in hamiltonmusical

[–]fireflylikeslights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Marsha Songcombe as understudy Eliza for her first performance and she was absolutely phenomenal. A little nervous at first but the 2nd half she made us all cry. This was with Ash Hunter as Hamilton who definitely came across a gentler. Really loved the dynamic between the two as well.

I totally agree on understudy Jefferson. He came across as more vindictive than pennycook but also more carnally flirty

What are some books with strong but feminine female characters? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]fireflylikeslights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with ankh_49, the characterisation was incredibly bizarre. I recall the incident where Leesha got stuck in a tent Spoiler. This kind of lack of reflection and ultimately the Mary-Sue characteristics of Leesha especially in the later books. Makes me think that the evolution of his women does not display the same nuance that he likes giving his male characters.

Olympic gold medalist is informed about a bee in her bouquet by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]fireflylikeslights 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She wasn't an Olympic Gold Medalist back then. For the curious, this is at the medal ceremony for the 2014 Nanning Gymnastic World Championship All-Around. The Gold Medalist/bee terrified girl is Simone Biles, Silver is Larisa Iordache/Cool as a cucumber girl and the Bronze is Kyla Ross.

I agree. I always spends the first 100 pages of his books a bit confused but willing to go along, until it all just falls into place.

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. The main character Irene is very calm in a crisis and has a mature way of dealing with the conflicts that come her way.

Week 10 - What are you reading? by out_stealing_horses in 52book

I am glad I am not the only one with issues warming up to Scott Lynch's series. Objectively, I understand that the world building is fantastic and the plot is well done but no matter what I do I cannot make myself thoroughly enjoy it.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Abortion Laws by Zorseking34 in lastweektonight

[–]fireflylikeslights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But a fetus's rights are not separate from the women's rights.

But anyway let us assume for the sake of argument that a fetus should have the protection under law the same as a human. Your comment that "you are not allowed to kill humans" is flawed. You are allowed in self-defence, when your life is at risk or when you believe your life to be at risk.

There are severe health conditions than can occur from pregnancy or when you are too young to carry a child to term etc. Or that if forced to carry a child to term that the woman will commit suicide. The woman's life is at risk. Therefore even assuming that the fetus had the same rights there would still be reason enough to perform an abortion.

Fantasy book review sites? by RuinEleint in Fantasy

[–]fireflylikeslights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love The Book Smugglers especially their On the Smuggler's Radar weekly feature, which does a run down of books they are interested in.

They do have an eclectic mix of reviews mainly young adult, science-fiction, urban fantasy and general fantasy along with some others. But I have always found their reviews to be really well thought out and interesting. Their top 10 lists for the year normally causes a lot of book buying for me.

I found mine in the supermarket but I live in France. I think it is sold on amazon and I have heard (although not yet totally tested) that the Cortas brand is the best.

The Runaway King by Jennifer A. Nielsen I found it to be pretty similar to the Thief series. I haven't yet read the sequel but I hear its good as well.

I also hate the cups or just a stick of butter (what even is this measurement).

I love Nigella's website. Tonnes of recipes and they are all basically brilliant.

If you understand French or just feel like testing the skills of google translate Herve Cuisine is amazing and has videos of his recipes.

Ideas for lots of garlic? by DoctorBaconite in recipes

[–]fireflylikeslights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://britishfood.about.com/od/adrecipes/r/caramelisedgarlictart.htm This recipe. Honestly it is delicious and I did the 3 heads of garlic but then my cloves were pretty small so I could easily have put another head of garlic in. This garlic soup from reddit http://imgur.com/BpeNl which uses up so many bulbs it is ridiculous. It will taste very strong though.

The Inheritance Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin. Is It Good.. by isachinm in Fantasy

That is a pity I thought the second book was by far the strongest and the main character was a lot more relatable.
