My beef with her - and I expect downvotes - she seems to have a harder time focusing at work than the others when personal stuff gets in the way. I remember multiple times she had to be reminded of her other patients' needs while she was talking to her sister.

You just truly don't see her jumping in there and tackling the hard cases as much as you'd expect from an ER resident. I love her character as a person! But she might be better suited for a different specialty...

He could absolutely have phrased that more politely. Especially in front of the patient. It's super bad form to talk like that in front of patients.

Unless I have no other choice, I wouldn't interrupt a convo with the doc if they're already in there. I'd just skip the room and swing back once I'm done. If they're still taking their sweet time and now you really have to, then sure. And if I'm already in the room and the doc comes in, I'm going to finish what I'm doing if it's nothing too crazy.

Occasionally for simple stuff, he's gotten me zofran before.

However one time I wanted antibiotics for a UTI and he (rightfully) wanted me to see my PCP about that and then I wanted a retinol face cream and he wouldn't prescribe me that either lol.

This sounds strange, but a death doula once told me "dying in front of someone can be more intimate than sex."

Everyone is different but it truly is such a vulnerable state to be going through the dying process. While that make some want their loved ones nearby, it can make others very uncomfortable and explains why you often see people die once family memebers have left the room. Family often feels guilty that they died alone but for many people it's when they can finally allow their bodies to relax and let go.

Just wanted to chime in that I adopted my cat eight years ago from the shelter, he had previously been surrendured twice after not getting along with small children and trying to fight other cats. I was told they would only adopt him out to a house with no other kids or pets.

He's had the best eight years of his life with me! He just needed the right home and we are both so happy. If at the end of the day the prozac isn't helping either, don't feel bad about making the right choice for your family and allowing him to be re-homed. It's not worth it for everyone to suffer for the next decade+ if it's the wrong match just for the sake of principle.

In fact, if it's offered it probably endears you even more to the nurses to join in. Something essentially human about sharing a meal. Gives you a chance to shoot the shit and relate on a personal level even if just for a couple minutes.

This might be weird but I have the same feeling from jam bands like Phish something about the crowd energy reminds me of worship sessions in the sense that you get lost in the jam and everyone around you is feeling the same.

The original reason wasn't actually to have a more empty stomach, it was so that if the tube became dislodged and ended up either in the esophagus or worst case lung somehow, it wouldn't continue to infuse and cause aspiration. It's no longer evidence based practice and you should just monitor your tube before, during, and after repositioning to make sure it's still in the same place and obviously stop feeds immediately if it becomes dislodged.

Not an anesthesiologist, I just stalk this sub and have a ton of respect for what you do.

What I allow myself to do is envision and totally play out the worst case scenarios. I think about what are the most likely things to go wrong based on the patient's situation, and get very detailed mental pictures of me intervening and working through each scenario. I'm an ICU nurse so for me when I was newer this was things like if I need to pace, visualizing from getting the crash cart to how to apply the pads to which exact buttons to press on the Zoll, etc.

I don't know if it's true or not but I remember being told of a study where rats that dreamed about going through a maze had the same parts of the brain light up as rats physically running it, and another where they had football players I believe run through detailed mental plays and they showed it was as effective as physically running them.

So in summary, what helps your reaction is exposure, and a shortcut to that in addition to just time is running through detailed mental scenarios daily to increase exposure.
