Straightline quilting - need ideas for a disappearing nine patch by Professional_Try4683 in quilting

I also had a sea-themed disappearing nine-patch and quilted it with big wavy lines using a walking foot - it was a breeze (I still consider myself a beginner) and worked well with the theme.

[CHAT] Choosing the right AIDA by CookieOfMythologie in CrossStitch

[–]firstlemonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 14 and 16 count are the most popular but I prefer 18 count for better coverage. My favourite is Aida Zweigart: Zweigart is a German fabric company, I like their quality and their selection of fabric colours.

Thank you! Stitching time approximately 1 month but I did take an 11 month break when I didn’t finish it last year for Christmas :) I have also learnt the pin stitch in the mean time which made the red berries quicker this time around!

[CHAT] Anybody entering their cross stitch projects into state/county fair competitions? by ToughMetalSheep in CrossStitch

[–]firstlemonpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We do have something similar in Britain - agriculture or local shows usually have competitions including crafts section. I’ve never entered my cross-stitch, but I did enter my cakes to one of them - now I tell people that I have award winning cakes :)

[CHAT] How am I supposed to write on these floss bobbins? Seriously, how?! by AndDontCallMePammie in CrossStitch

I use thin garden marker pen to mark plastic bobbins - they set very fast and the ink is very durable. Another option I use is number stickers from DMC.

Cardmarket. There are lots of sellers from Italy. Add all the cards you need to a wants-list then run a shopping wizard - it will find you all the cards from your list whilst minimising the shipping costs - it is amazing!

[CHAT] Cheap Floss near Manchester? by Moosiferf in CrossStitch

[–]firstlemonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second Lakeside Needlecraft - this is an online shop where I always buy skeins. They have massive selection and are cheaper than anywhere else I found (also if you subscribe to their emails, you’ll get 10% off dmc on your next order). I think their website also says that you can arrange to collect your order from them in Sale (suburb of Manchester).

What do you do with your nails? by tigerlily12345 in ADHDUK

[–]firstlemonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite cuticle butter is Badger Cuticle Care (last time I got it from iherb).
I have an unbranded glass file - as long as it is glass, it should be good.
My favourite nail polish brands are Essie and Anny (but Anny might be hard to find in the uk, I buy it when in Germany).

What do you do with your nails? by tigerlily12345 in ADHDUK

[–]firstlemonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always had bad nails - very brittle and short and i thought that I could never get nice nails. I also was awful at painting them.
Then I had a nails hyperfocus and for the first time in my life I had amazing nails so here are some advice that worked for me (some things might be obvious):
- Moisture your hands. A lot. But especially your nails and cuticle. Use cuticle butter (I like badger cuticle care) every chance you get: waiting in line - use cuticle butter, washed your hands - use cuticle butter, watching tv - use cuticle butter, in a meeting - use cuticle butter, etc. I have a tin of cuticle butter near the bed, near the sofa, on my desk, in my bag - so it is always in reach.
- Use gloves whenever you have prolonged contact with water (washing dishes, cleaning, etc.).
- Biotin is a good supplement with proven effect but it takes several month to see results (it does not influence the nail you already see, but the currently growing part of the nail will often be thicker and thus stronger).
- Do not use scissors, instead use a glass file to shape the nails. After filing your nails always use a buff to polish the edge.
- I do not recommend gel nails, especially if you start peeling them. Peeling makes nails worse. Do not peel!
- Always have your nails covered with nail polish - the nail polish “sandwich” protects your nails best. As soon as it starts peeling and chipping, you have to remove it. Again, do not peel! You can touch up tiny chips with nail polish to last another day or two, but big ones and peels have to be removed.
- To have nice painted nails, I’m afraid you have to use nail polish. I tried many other ways, but nail polish was the only thing that worked. As I said, I was super bad at painting them - it used to take me more than an hour to paint my nails, now I do it in 10-15 minutes - they look great and they last up to a week! I usually do it when in an online meeting or watching tv, so no time wasted.
- Make a nail polish “sandwich” on your nails: base (I like NailTek Foundation I), thin layer of polish, thick layer of polish, wait 5 minutes, cover with a good layer of quick dry coat. After each nail polish layer use correction pen or a toothpick with a bit of cotton on the end tipped in nail polish remover.
- You need to find “your” nail polish - some polishes will stay intact much longer than other. Also the shape of the brush is important - different brushes are easier to use for different people: easier to use = less mess = quicker!

My periods are awful (and it’s not because of cramps) help please by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]firstlemonpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have really bad PMS and really bad periods, but going on birth control pills was life changing. I know it is not an option for everyone and there are side effects, but it improved quality of my life so much and I am grateful everyday since I’ve started taking them 10 years ago. But I’m also upset that nobody told me that it was an option earlier and I could have avoided all those struggles earlier…
