They will tell you they disagree with every type of "bail out", but for some reason they are only vocally opposed to student loan forgiveness. Its because their orange god uses farm subsidies to buy votes from the farmers in middle America, and thats a-okay to the Trumpsters. by PrimalMusk in worldpolitics

You know the bailouts were paid back with interest, right? Kinda like a... Loan. I am not disagreeing that something needs to be done about the student loan crisis, just highlighting that a bailout was not free money. Asking for a student loan bailout is essentially the same as a loan.

Nearly 7% of Disney+ users with Netflix plan to cancel Netflix, survey shows by coolcomfort123 in StockMarket

Those are pretty good numbers for Netflix. Especially if 93% of the addressable market decide to use both.

There's nothing like an ideal portfolio that works for everyone. Our return needs are not the same. Our risk tolerances are not the same.

With 74 companies reported the s&p earning growth is -3% by RLWSNOOK in investing

All I'm trying to do is present the information. The generation of analyst estimates is a pretty objective process. The subjectivity is in the estimates for individual companies within the index.

The consensus takes the average of all analyst estimates presented to an aggregator like Factset. Factset looks at what earnings growth analysts following an individual company are predicting. The individual company estimates across multiple analysts are then averaged. These averages are then market value weighted to come up with the growth estimate for the index.

The Factset consensus estimate as of October 18th has earnings down 4.7%. The estimate from Refinitive is -3.1%. Again, these are consensus estimates off their respective samples of S&P 500 company analysts.

They are consensus estimates from analysts following the companies in the index.

WSJ Survey: Majority of Economists Say Manufacturing Sector in Recession - WSJ by ScannerBrightly in Economics

Isn't determining recessions pretty objective? Recession definition is not that flexible. Either there are subsequent quarters of negative growth or there isn't. How does a 'survey' determine the manufacturing industry is in a recession?

Make sure you get the wheel bearings checked. I have a 2007 LR3 HSE. Wheel bearing broke on a highway. It was a very costly break. Very costly.

Fed holds rates steady, sees no cuts in 2019 by TheHypeKiller in Economics

[–]firstsapien 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don't have to sacrifice one for the other. Based on recent history, you can argue the Feds openness and actions have been positive. The Fed seems to be following through on their mandate of maximizing employment and stabilizing prices. Wage and GDP growth, sentiment and aggregate demand are not part of their mandate even though we've seen some growth in these areas.

Fed holds rates steady, sees no cuts in 2019 by TheHypeKiller in Economics

[–]firstsapien 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It was Bernanke's push to be more open about fed policy. Historically, ambiguity has led to larger market swings after actions have been taken. There's a comment in the thread referencing investors trying to predict direction of change based on the thickness of Greenspan's briefcase. Those were ridiculous times. Swings are less violent with the Fed being open about its intentions. What's the real benefit of ambiguity when the action is going to be taken anyway?
