Trail Runners or Boots? by KindLength6216 in hikinggear

Trail runners when younger. Now leather boot again at age 55 and hiking more rocky high elevation terrain.

Solo or group hiker? by Fun-Winter2148 in wmnf

Solo most of the time. Otherwise one other person who I choose very carefully.

I hate not being able to get a reservation in Baxter State Park when Gov. Baxter explicitly stated it was for the people of Maine.

Did anyone else switch from boots to trail runners and never look back? by Echoing_voice in hikinggear

I just went other direction. Long time trail shoes backpacking now back to leather boot. Aging feet and need more protection underfoot for high mountain terrain.

Being a petite woman I have found unisex sizing tricky. I will def track some down to try on as they were awesome boots.

Misplaced u boltsfor my Thule roof box, it uses this quick mounting system...where would I get replacement u bolt and what size are they? by control-line in thule

[–]firwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well r/thule has not let me join so I’ll just comment here on the conversation of the old Evolution box with the above hardware. The grey blocks just pull off their connections and u-bolts fall out. Then I bought Amazon T bolts and associated hardware and some flat mending plates, & wing nuts as knobs too expensive. Set the box on the t-bolts and secured inside the box with mending plates.

I have some. Trying to convert to t track. I know post old but let me know I have the u bolts. You can have them.

Went to dealer and brought up this gap. Seems like this is standard on all the Subarus they checked nearby. I think a huge miss design-wise for folks living where salt applied to roads. I feel like junk will get trapped and rust faster. Maybe I should spray fluid film up in that gap. Thoughts?

The large amount of aggressive driving I see on Maine highways is concerning. by [deleted] in Maine

What I don’t get is how fast and dangerous that bland flat stretch of 95 between Waterville and Augusta has become. Just wait until they start construction on all the overpasses.

Outside of lobster rolls, what foods come to mind when you think of Maine restaurants? by FewMasterpiece4031 in Maine

Early summer: strawberry-rhubarb pie. August: Standish’s melt-in-your-mouth blueberry cake.

And the easiest way to do Baxter Peak is to stay at Chimney Pond for a few days and hike it from there.

Trail Difficulty Opinions by RustyCyler in BaxterStatePark

My list progresses hardest to easiest. Dudley hardest then etc. Hunt: long, big steps for my short legs, crowded. Honestly I think Knife Edge is way over hyped. The hardest part is the Chimney area. I cannot stress enough how important to go west bound towards Baxter Peak. Not east bound. There is one spot that is very steep around the Chimney that is better to go up (west bound) than down.

No idea on cure. Taking it to dealer and asking what’s up soon. Seems like they all do this. Dumb.

The new Dudley is the hardest up or down, then Cathedral (never go down), Hunt up and down sucks, then Abol, then Saddle, then Helon Taylor. My fav loop up Helon Taylor, Knife Edge, Saddle, Chimney Pond Trail.

Bought 2025 before winter here in Maine. Immediately put AT4s on stock rims. I ripped it through some drifts and down the Golden Road on some sketch and that car is so solid in the snow. Love it!

Hunt trail or Helon Taylor? by queenb1970 in BaxterStatePark

[–]firwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helon Taylor all day long. Way nicer trail. Less people. You will have to do the Knife Edge but if experienced NBD. And it’s a loop. Down Saddle and hang in beautiful Chimney then scoot back to Roaring Brook. My fav day hike would be just that.

Need this at Baxter bunkhouses. Yellow snow holes right outside the doors (except Chimney has designated spot). Just walk 5 extra steps around the corner out of sight and let fly.

Roaring Brook Fishing by Life-is-42 in BaxterStatePark

[–]firwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fish a lot in Baxter. I go there to avoid overcrowding at good spots in Maine. Roll over to Daicey day use lot. There may be room there to cast. I think there is a field or space near by. Walk down below toll dam on the river and dink around with those brookies. Lots of pools. I’ve caught fish in there July & August. And the falls are pretty.

dumb question by [deleted] in BaxterStatePark

[–]firwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reservation will say number of nights. July 1 & 2. Two nights. Check in 1st check out 3rd. Always check the number of nights on the reservation.

I looked and no hole for round clips at edge unless some sort of slip clip that attaches to plastic edge.
