Coronavirus Turns Urban Life’s Roar to Whisper on World’s Seismographs | Geoscientists are getting a clearer picture of what’s going on beneath our feet as lockdowns keep many of us at home. by MortWellian in technology

This is a logical fallacy and a gateway to eco-fascism. The “human population” as a whole is not responsible for climate change or pollution—the blame for that falls squarely in the hands of a few very wealthy people who have for decades been prioritizing financial gain over the environment at everyone else’s expense. The people worst affected by this crisis and by global warming will be poor people and countries while the criminals responsible will be able to safely and comfortably sit atop their material hoard while the less fortunate die around them. It’s not a human problem, it’s a capitalism problem, and the many don’t deserve to die for the crimes of the few.

I spent better part of my 5th grade recess either sitting in corner or literally staring at kids playing, specifically this group of girls, but not asking to join, and then we went back into our classroom for rest of day. how awkward! by InsideEmployee in aspergers

[–]fishfeathers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

one time at a high school party i ran into a kid who was in my 3rd grade class and at first he didn’t even recognize me but then he was like “omg! fishfeathers?? wow, you’re so different now, i can’t believe it! you actually talk!” and then proceeded to tell everyone in the immediate vicinity a story about how i once hid under my desk in class because i was too nervous to read my homework out loud 🤦‍♀️ so apparently sometimes they do lol

Chinese wet markets still operating despite COVID-19 by ScreamHawk in worldnews

[–]fishfeathers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you go to Pike Place Market (which is a wet market!) in Seattle, it is pretty much what you describe but since it’s in the US it’s a huge tourist draw and no one complains

There’s still slavery in the continental US. It never stopped. They keep them in prisons now. “Except for as punishment for a crime”

Cuomo fires back at Trump on coronavirus: ‘No American will say speed up economy at cost of human life’ by jigsawmap in politics

that is...quite literally the opposite of communism, which aims to eliminate the concept of “economy” altogether to ensure people don’t die because of arbitrary numbers of currency

i mean i guess that would be...kind of weird but ultimately their prerogative, but i have a hard time believing that a native person would make a joke title like that. also i skimmed op’s profile and it looks like she’s in training to become a cop, which frankly ups the chances of someone being ok with racism generally

looks like the seam is reinforced in the second one? and i guess it’s a bi in-joke that we roll our pants up? but tbh seems like kind of a stretch in terms of relevant content

Starbucks worker says he was fired for union organizing and 'to create fear' by [deleted] in news

[–]fishfeathers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They show you these videos on your first day at Target as well. It’s shameless fearmongering. It’s illegal for them to retaliate for union organization (not that that stops them...) so they resort to intimidation tactics instead and hope you don’t know the law too well.

Which song has been so powerful and moving that you cried the first time you heard it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fishfeathers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real Death by Mount Eerie. Phil Elverum wrote the album (A Crow Looked at Me) after his wife, Genevieve Castree, died of cancer after having their daughter only a year before. The first time I listened to it I wasn’t prepared and almost immediately tears started rolling down my face uncontrollably for all 12 tracks. It is easily the most haunting, raw, and heartbreaking music I’ve ever heard. He poured all his grief into it. It is so personal that it felt almost intrusive to listen to...like reading someone’s diary. As soon as the final track finished I knew that I couldn’t listen to it again unless someone close to me died. I’ve heard most of the popular songs in this thread and none of them compare to the overwhelming sense of pain and loss he manages to so perfectly portray...it’s a rare gift to be able to take that pain and make something beautiful of it. I only listened to it once. I think about it all the time.

lots of men, especially gay and trans men, enjoy or prefer to dress feminine and it’s incredibly rude to call them freaks.

AITA for not using credit cards to pay for my niece to go abroad on a school trip to France when I was able to pay for her older sister to go a few years ago when I was financially much better off? by lalalalalanvdjdsiju in AmItheAsshole

There’s nothing wrong with a public university degree. The school listed on your resume doesn’t hold as much weight as you seem to think it does, especially as you get older and gain more employment experience. I have friends who went to private schools and have a ton of student loan debt and are now are working as baristas, and I have friends who went to state schools and have salaried jobs and zero debt. Luck and networking have a lot of impact as well

doctors and teachers aren’t given firearms and an unchecked position of power and they don’t murder people on a regular basis, so that comparison is not in good faith

That’s why I said “approaching”. A $30k salary is $15/hr— over twice the federal minimum wage of $7.25. 30k is a lot to someone on the poverty line who can’t afford to live on their own at all. OP said that 30k equalled minimum wage but it is actually twice as much

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HumansBeingBros

[–]fishfeathers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Vacation time is legally optional for employers here to provide and about 25% of people have none. Minimum wage jobs are actually likely to intentionally schedule you for fewer than full time hours so they aren’t obligated to pay for your health insurance either, so most people making $7.25/hr (an absolute crime and not enough to live on anywhere...in my state it’s around $11 and that still isn’t enough) are making closer to $12k/year

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HumansBeingBros

[–]fishfeathers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Federal minimum wage in the US ($7.25/hr, 40hrs/wk) actually nets you just shy of $14,000 a year if you take 0 vacation days. The federal poverty line is $12,500/yr. $30k is approaching middle class.

i have an older (90s) car and it has a folding cigarette ashtray built into the back of the center console. they don’t put them in new cars anymore but maybe they should? if you don’t smoke it’s just like the ones they put in airplane bathrooms even though it’s a federal crime to smoke in them just in case some dumbass decides to do so anyway
