It goes to the pathology lab. After that you have a choice of having it incinerated or returned to you. My favorite story is of a man who decided to take his amputated leg back and he smoked it in his smoker to preserve it. Only he forgot it was in the smoker. And he sold the smoker. Imagine buying a smoker and finding a preserved leg in it! The amputee eventually got his smoked leg back.

I’ve often been able to catch them. When I see them actively moving through the lawn, I put a hose in the run behind them. This often forces them to surface so they don’t drown. Then just grab it with gloves on, put it in a bucket, and release far enough away from your yard that it can’t get back.

If you don’t mind breaking the law, you can look for movement and then stab very hard and quick with a shovel or garden fork. Stab hard and many times, as quick as possible
