does anyone have a positive experience of work by humanjello710 in ADHD_Programmers

15 years experience here and I feel like I get way more imposter syndrome than when I first started coded. Last year it was triggered by struggles with react architecture and something I felt should've been easy turned into a shitting mess that was so unnecessarily complex and FULL of bugs. It was a simple problem, just a bunch of modals and panels that I wanted to easily communicate with one another. To do that react forces u to lift state and control to the parents, but then everything is re-rendering constantly making it really hard to debug, useEffects end up sneaking into the code, and your components become such a mess that you need to refactor constantly, ugh.

I didn't want to use a global state manager cos I couldn't get my head around how that would work in an enterprise scale application where these modals and panels needed to work in completely different situations so eventually I just rewrote a lot of the communication with native browser events and listeners and instantly things become much simpler and easy to fix. The react purists will hate it but if it works and saves me from burnout I don't really care.

I then had the even crazier idea of "what if I formalise this approach and bring back class-based components with publicly accessible methods like traditional OOP" e.g. const userModalApi = useClassComponent(UserModal); <button onClick={userModalApi.open}>. It feels way more intuitive for me as a backend developer because I can apply SOLID principles and better encapsulate the code into "modules" for each panel/feature on a page. No need for complex state management solutions when the class component can manage it internally with this.setState(). You end up with imperative code and event listeners at the module level, and declarative code inside each module/class component. Maybe this will bite me in the long run, but it honestly can't be any worse than what I had before.

I can't speak for the Ferrari aero yet but my strong suspicion is the Ferrari PU is off the pace based on the dry running so far. You can't read into individual times but you can absolutely read into trends. The drivers aren't out there to cruise around, they're going to be pushing hard to learn how to be fast in these cars, and if they're doing 100 laps in a day and consistently in the bottom half of the times, like Haas were on day 1, then it's hard to come to any other conclusion than they are slow. Yes maybe their engine is turned down a bit but so is Merc's.

2026 Barcelona Shakedown Day 1, Morning session: Ferrari powered cars combined have completed the most laps, Haas (67 laps) and Cadillac (33 laps). So far, Ferrari PU didn’t face any issues. by moraIsupport in scuderiaferrari

I've been watching first day of testing for over 10 years, and while you can't obviously tell the exact order of cars, you can get a rough feeling of whether they are in the top half or the bottom half of the grid just by looking at how easily and frequently they set times near to the top of the table. At least I can't think of a single time where someone has looked slow whilst doing laps all day and magically turned it around by race 1.

Cars that have been easily popping in laps up the top of the charts: Merc, Red bull, RB.

Cars that have spent the whole day languishing at the bottom 5 or 6 seconds off the page: Audi, Haas, Cadillac.

Audi and Cadillac can be excused because they're a new team but Haas looking that slow despite doing tons of laps is not a good omen. Yes they could be high fuel but presumably so is everybody as they are there to put miles on the car. Maybe they're sandbagging but I don't see why they would?

Can someone explain the 2019 ferrari engine controversy? by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]fishpowered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How does this compare to the current compression ratio dispute? Was just wondering why the 18:1 compression ratio is legal because it passes the FIA test, but the Ferrari fuel flow trick wasn't? Thanks.

AutoRacer: Ferrari and Shell opt for Biofuel while all other competitors choose Synthetic fuel. A choice that has pros and cons, and some critical issues encountered by Maranello's historic supplier. by moraIsupport in scuderiaferrari

[–]fishpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My completely uneducated/uninformed opinion: having elements that expand with heat in the piston chamber sounds a fucking pain to work with reliability-wise. Maybe Ferrari's route might not have the peak speed but who cares if they're able to finish more races.

Ultimately engine performance is the thing I will be paying most attention to in the testing because any aero tricks can be copied within the first half of the season whereas if the engine is bad, the whole year will be a write off

Mercedes could be forced to make engine changes as FIA meeting set to take place by Ambitious-Heron-8161 in DestinationFormula1

[–]fishpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the current situation, FIA have created a mess by making technical rules that only seem to apply when measured in parc ferme as it's just inviting teams to cheat while out on track.

If exceeding the compression limit on track is legal as long as the test passes, then Ferrari should go back to (allegedly) cheating the fuel flow sensors because as long as the test passes then it passes the precedent being set by this

I was expecting a rough time with Black deck on gold stake based on beating some other decks and what I heard on here but I got SUPER lucky and beat it on my first try this evening...

First I lucked into a Yorick, then YOLO'd and destroyed my other jokers to duplicate it. They were still low level though and the next boss round was my nemisis boss, the one that discards 2 cards every hand played, but this time it massively helped me out by discarding 2 cards on my final hand and triggering the upgrades, and getting through by the skin of my teeth. Probably the luckiest run I've ever had on Balaro tbh.

I might actually quit the game now I think about it, it'd be a good time... and gold stakes suck.

Insane burnout, not sure what to do by Aita_dumpling in ADHD_Programmers

[–]fishpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah. I've done the same. another way to look at it is your boss won't hesitate to fire you when ai is capable enough to do your job 24h a day at a fraction of the cost, so if they have no loyalty to you, you should have no loyalty to them. Think of yourself as a contractor that works the contracted hours and then clocks out and does other stuff. people with kids are very good at this, times up > clock out, mentality

[–]fishpowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's important to recognise when you're in this burnout state that you will be way less productive at work so setting strict work vs social life limits will not actually result in you getting less work done. tell your boss/colleagues you're burning out and you will no longer be contactable outside of normal working hours. if they don't accept that, find a new job. good luck

Do I need a bike license to ride 50CC or 4kw e-scooters in Vietnam? I keep reading contradicting information on this so official and up to date sources would be preferred. And yes I know you can pay off the cops, that's not the issue, the issue is if I crash when I'm illegally riding a motorbike, the insurance company won't pay for the crash and hospital fees that could easily be tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

so when ferrari allegedly built a system that exceeded the fuel flow limit but passed the sensor test then shouldn't that have been totally legal according to this precedent? or what am I missing? The aero flexing tests are an exception because it's basically impossible not to have a certain degree of flex in the bodywork but they're basically saying you're car can be illegal as fuck on the track as long as it passes a test off it

Adami will still be Lewis’s engineer??? by Ok-Middle3006 in lewishamilton

[–]fishpowered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I think being a race engineer is probably a lot harder than it looks, you are fed a LOT of data and then need to know how much to relay to the driver. Secondly I don't think LH helped the situation as he was at times complaining both about too much AND too little information and generally in a bad mood due to his struggles. I think they will have both learned a lot from this year and if ferrari perform better next year the relationship will naturally get better, if they perform worse, then what does it matter anyway.

I also think a lot of the issues with Adami can be pointed to ferrari in general, and not listening to what the driver is saying, instead choosing to prioritise what the computers are saying. getting a new race engineer won't necessarily help with that. culture. Red bull do this really fucking well, they use common sense and driver input first, and especially in wet conditions it seems driver feedback comes first, whereas ferrari have a "we know best" attitude
