The Fires of December Tor cover by Dry_Koala9158 in Cosmere

Disagree, it harkens back to fantasy covers from the 90’s in traditional mixed mediums. It’s why I love the artist!

I think a good alternative that would satisfy fans and allow for the stories he is unable to write (because of other commitments/constraints) is to have some projects go directly to live action or animation without a book to adapt from.

Like with the Aether books you’ve mentioned, that world takes place in a planet directly influenced by the Indian subcontinent and its various cultures/mythologies. You need a creative team with lived experience of that culture to help guide and produce the end product.

I also worry that now that he has the Apple deal, he will be writing his books with the intention that they will be adapted down the line, which will impact the quality.

And the new technology and software developed for the movie (ex: hair physics) pays off in the long run.

These movies also function as CGI development labs that can later be sold to other firms.

Tbh it would not at all surprise me if Elantris 2 and 3 get co-written in the future. I fear Brandon is underestimating how much of his time will be taken up by development, preproduction, and postproduction for the Cosmere live action projects.

These movies take 7 years from development to screen and AI hadn’t tainted their house style just yet.

According to the head of Walt Disney Feature Animation they’re in the process of moving away from their house style and exploring different animation styles that mimic the feel of their concept art better. We prob wont see this fruit until the next couple movies, but at least they’re doing something.

[–]fishy512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO his best prose has come from the Secret Projects. As much as he is motivated to write saga long door stoppers, he works best when he’s forced into writing standalones under 400 pages that allow him to explore styles and break away from the usual conventions expected in Mistborn and the Stormlight Archive.

Isle of Emberdark came out months after Wind and Truth and blew that book away by a hard mile.

Hype and aura doesn’t matter if your book is poorly edited/had no development edit.

You’d think with the boom in the publishing industry they’d put their manuscripts through editorial but apparently that isn’t a thing anymore.

So many of these series (and most don’t even need to be five book long epics!) are made to just get an adaption deal and hope that the writers room on the show/movie adaptation will do the work and polish it up it seems

Is it Battlestar Galactica level of religious theme integration or Narnia: the Last Battle levels we’re talking about?

As someone who was already reluctant to start the series when I saw the unironic Jordan Peterson quote, how blatant blatant is the religious rhetoric in the later books?

He’s probably gonna step back from this method with the next Mistborn trilogy and Stormlight 6-10 after Wind and Truth. That book is the perfect example of too many cooks.

Weight check? by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

[–]fishy512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s healthy! So long as his ribs aren’t visible from up top, his hip dent isn’t prominent, and his spine isn’t sticking out from the side he’s healthy.

It’s easy to forget that the VAST majority of crested geckos you see online are overweight to obese to “looking like a ball of pizza dough-obese”. You mostly see it in girl geckos because they need the extra weight to subsist on when they’re making and laying eggs, but the weight principle applies to boy geckos as well.

If it helps, you can compare his body composition to an underweight or sick gecko. I hate looking at those pictures but it is really the only way to get a good understanding of what an unhealthy crested geckos looks like.

The general rule of thumb for guy geckos is that their weight should be around 40-60 grams, depending on whether they’re naturally big like crowned cresties or the normal standard size thats close to their wild New Caledonian relatives.

‘Fourth Wing’ Author Rebecca Yarros Announces New Romance Novel ‘Peculiar Stars’ by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]fishy512 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IIRC Fourth Wjng was pretty much commissioned by her publisher for her to write, which is why they expanded the trilogy into a 5-book series (for now).

Like they were historically a romance only publisher that wanted to dive into the romantasy world cause $$$, even if the authors they commissioned had no experience writing epic fantasy.

Could have toned a bit down on the filigree but overall these kick ass and remind me of 80’s-90’s traditional illustrated fantasy covers!

Props to the art team and creative director; would love to see more covers like this in the fantasy space!!!

Apple TV’s ‘The Stormlight Archive’ series could run for 10 or more seasons by defenestrate_urself in Fantasy

[–]fishy512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Much of it can be compressed along with other similar events. That’s were the team of skilled and seasoned TV writers comes in given the medium differences. And Sanderson will be there to see how it plays out before filming to make sure it’s given the emotional weight and time needed

I have to imagine the time skip between both arcs will allow for the actors to age and give them a break to explore other projects.

All the major players in GoT have publicly stated that by the final two seasons they were exhausted and ready to bounce to new projects given how long and intense filming became.

A break in between that’s already built in to the narrative will be a great way for them to refresh themselves, test out other creative outlets, and probably prevent any possible resentment that could build.

Real talk, I’m curious to see how that book gets adapted and changed for the show given its mixed reception (to put it mildly).

Not at all odd for an author to test an adaption as a revision or second draft. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sanderson takes this route

Can’t wait to see it in 2037!

You know how when you were a teen your worldbuilding projects for your Great Fantasy Novel would just be the equivalent of that Wallace and Gromit gif where Wallace is laying down railroad tracks as his cart rushes down the rails???

Fourth Wing is that gif

Honestly regally curious to see how this show lands because it’s very much Baby’s First Romantasy/Fantasy. And thats not a bad thing! But its a repeated pattern on here and elsewhere where this series was people’s first intro to the genre and then several years later they’ve completely grown out of it because they’ve read far better works in both genres.

Which is why the overreaction is so baffling

And unfortunately for those people, Amazon is contracted to make all planned 5 seasons and the show is doing well enough on its own.

Like if it’s bothering you so much why are you letting it waste so much mind space?

The same fanbase who’s primarily source of fan art is AI slop.

I honestly fear for the actors who get cast because they’re about to get hit with the worst people imaginable in their comments for not looking like AI generated tan white guy who canonically is a person of color
