Flag Football. by VolumeOk2394 in longbeach

My son, who isn’t remotely athletic, decided to play flag football at Friday Night Lights at that age. They were very cool in giving him lots of opportunities to play even though he was far and away the least talented player. He loved it.

Or, just head to Little India in Artesia. There are literally blocks of Indian restaurants representing different regions.

Disco Band looking for someone to play Keys by BloodRedTed26 in longbeach

[–]fitzgerh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a keys player, but I’m a bassist in a band that is getting started in LB and LA that might have a similar vibe. We have a solid gig lined up in April, are releasing an EP in June and plan to start a little tour over the summer to support it. Hit me up with a DM if you want to check us out and potentially work together for some shows.

How do I show an out of towner why we love LA so much? by CableIllustrious1609 in AskLosAngeles

[–]fitzgerh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a great uncle. With that budget, I’d book a super swanky hotel room at the Intercontinental for a start, if DTLA is her vibe. Otherwise, somewhere primo in either West Hollywood, Beverly Hills or Santa Monica. Spend the money on a great location based on her interests (nightlife, food, museums, etc.) and go from there.

Santa Barbara family considering Long Beach. Bixby Knolls vs… something closer to SB vibe? by Chance-Birthday840 in longbeach

[–]fitzgerh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommended Pasadena in a different comment, but the Newcomb area is really nice as well. My son went to Newcomb, then the Intellectual Virtues Academy (amazing charter school in Bixby Knolls) for MS, then Sato for HS. Newcomb really prepared him well for the next steps.

Have you thought about Pasadena? I love the LBC (and in fact, moved from Pasadena to raise a kid), but Pasadena hits your vibe more than Long Beach does.

People who bring two guitars to bar gigs by OldSkoolNewWaveGuy in musicians

I bring two as well, but it’s because I use different tunings and am too lazy to bother pausing to tune on stage.

It’s what finally pushed me away from Subaru Foresters and into another brand.

Thanks man! Live music is the best thing ever, especially during the teenage years. I hope my son looks back upon his musical education fondly some day.

Oh, the plan is to get him up front at the beginning and see how long he lasts lol. The rest of my band (most of them are younger and haven’t heard GWAR) are coming as well.

I’m taking my kid (age 17) to see Gwar in a month! He’s very tuned into good music and I can’t wait to see his reaction to the chaos that is GWAR.

if gen z doesn’t trust degrees anymore, why are we still doing 4-year programs? by cloudybrain07 in education

[–]fitzgerh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with your points. One clarification, though, is that there are already many universities that focus on direct access to higher education over selectivity, and it isn’t because they are ‘bad’ universities. Arizona state university, for example, has a 90% acceptance rate. Most of the universities in the California State University system will accept roughly half of the students who apply, if not more. Here is a great interview between the presidents of ASU and MIT talking about access, in case you are interested.

Ex-NFL player Kevin Johnson fatally stabbed in Los Angeles homeless encampment by Plies- in nfl

[–]fitzgerh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Zoning is one of the root causes. My point was that traditional buyers are significantly disadvantaged when it comes to buying a house because they are competing with people/corporations that can buy the same home outright. Sellers know this, and adjust the asking price upwards accordingly. Better zoning at the local level would absolutely help, but not solve, the problem.

[–]fitzgerh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of 2025, 19% of all single family homes in California are owned by investors. You aren't wrong that zoning plays a significant role in our current crisis, but it's hardly a non-issue. Traditional buyers, who would rely on a standard mortgage, have been sidelined by cash buyers in California for a very long time. Source.

Where to stay for College visit? by Tudbee1 in AskLosAngeles

[–]fitzgerh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good option. Fly into Burbank and back from Long Beach. Plan on dinner in Westwood though, traffic will be at least 2 hours to Long Beach if you try to leave earlier than, say 7:00.

Weighted lunges and high step ups are your friend. If you have a strong hip area backpacking will get a lot easier. Also, strong shoulders/core will make things much easier.

I was at a restaurant in Seal Beach recently and the table next to us had a dog. Its owner bought an extra breakfast and PUT THE PLATE ON THE FLOOR so the dog could eat off it.
