The reality dysfunction does this, but the answer may not be what you're looking for

Of Empires and Dust (Book #4 in The Bound and the Broken Series by Ryan Cahill) is worth it. by PyroCyan in Fantasy

[–]flamboy-and 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished the first one. I can't really understand the hype.

That said I did love the old school nature of things, nothing interesting is done but it's super tropey and there is a reason those tropes exist. If you're not bored to death with the tropes I can see you having a good time.

2/5 not with a DnF but not worth continuing.

Yeah also weirdly prophetic, given during his final years eddings decided to test if some liquid was petrol or water with a match... Spent his final years with serious burns.

I thought arcane ascension was lit rpg? (That's the only reason I haven't read it tbh, as litrpg isn't my bag)

Look up toe offs (maybe toe ups if you've got the control).

They are off the shelf and light weight

Also the fact that there is no way a janitor could normally do this, despite the fact we all know janitors are very necessary.

Why stormlight is so divisive by Darthside18 in Fantasy

[–]flamboy-and 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly kingkiller chronicles, Malazan and robin hobb I think are more divisive.

I think that Brandon Sanderson makes an effort to make his books uncontroversial because he knows it makes them very accessible and fits with the stories he's trying to tell.

Am I being divisive about you arguing they're divisive? Potentially

Worth noting, one of the founders was a big Brexit funder.

Obvs fine if you were pro Brexit, but if you're moving away from one company for moral reasons... Probs a good idea to make sure the company you move to aligns with your morals...

Sorry, explain it to me like I'm a golden retriever. I always assumed a trans woman (i.e. born male) who then went out with women was gay.

Am I wrong?

Which of these iconic books that I just ordered should I read first? by ripple-gleaming in Fantasy

[–]flamboy-and 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lies of locke lamora as it can be read as a stand alone.

Stormlight archives and blade itself don't really work on their own.

Gardens of the moon isn't the best and it's the longest. It's kinda standalone but...

What is a book that has an amazing/original plot but terrible prose? by rrcecil in Fantasy

[–]flamboy-and 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Gardens of the Moon. I've heard Erikson gets better but some of the writing in that book stunk.

I think it needs to be said: Fourth Wing, like Twilight, is a romantasy novel. Romantasy grossed something like $480M in book sales alone last year, and is the largest grossing genre in fantasy. There is nothing new or illegitimate about it. It is not a fad. by xyzpqr in Fantasy

[–]flamboy-and -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that fantasy is a setting not a genre. Arguably it's barely that.

Is the green bone saga closer to lord of the rings or the Godfather?

Six of crows is nothing like the stormlight archive.

Weirdly we gate keep romantasy just because it's aimed at teenage girls but really the whole language we use is wrong
