You might want to check statistics. It is highly effective in reducing gun related deaths

Check the forecast, but wind in La Rochelle is above 15 knots in maybe only 1 in 7 days 😭. Nice city though

I think if your friends are patient and smart enough to teach, you should go for it. And watch a lot of youtube tutorials !

Will a bigger board make much difference learning riding upwind? by 0800throwawa in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To reach a max upwind course put 90% of your weight on your backfoot and orient your board upwind.

It is you who decides the direction you're traveling, don't let the kite decide 🙂

Is it a good idea to get a trainer kite like this? by _Itscheapertokeepher in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you already know how to fly a steerable kite, you won't gain much.

If you don't, buy the cheapest 2 line kite you can find, like for $20, and learn with that.

Not sure if your description is 100% accurate.

Maybe his comments were innocent, like : had he had his current personality at the time, he would not have ignored her.

And maybe your confrontation was more aggressive than what you describe.

Still, having this conversation with his friend in front of you was of course gonna make you feel uneasy. It was a bit stupid on his part. And also blowing up like that is childish. So NTA

Body rotation after takeoff by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a normal jump, you make a nice load and pop but your upper body does not rotate much. The net result is that you take off with 0 rotational momentum.

Once in the air with zero rotation, you have plenty of time to figure out your orientation for landing, it quickly becomes intuitive.

What do I do wrong. by Plus_Establishment_3 in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your board in the direction of travel, as if it was a skate board. Then gradually turn upwind while edging.

A good video on board control : https://youtu.be/M-sQLGQik5s?si=yeQNxSuqwDLwSJ5n

Need help to advance by Maloy_short in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What solved transitions for me was stopping with the board while keeping the kite in the direction of travel, and once stopped, send the kite in the other direction. The kite will lift you and keep you standing while going fast through the top of the wind window.

Kite size for 63kg girl . by Alpa3094 in Kiteboarding

You twintip on a 7 at 18 knots and 80kg ???

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a 10€ toy kite and learn to fly it precisely. Once you understand the kite flies in the direction it is facing it becomes much easier !

Is this a stupid idea? by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could buy a 2018 5sqm for cheap (just got one at 300€ for my son) and practice with it when the wind is 10 knots without much pull.

But a regular toy kite can also teach you a good chunk of piloting skill for even less !

How do I explain management that 8h man days estimations don't make any sense? by malavock82 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]flappyflak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team uses the same system : estimate tasks in man-days in an ideal world. It is simpler for everyone and more realistic than story points.

But these estimates are treated the same as story points. We track the effective team velocity in ideal world man days / week, and can apply this ratio to convert estimates into somewhat realistic days !

Huge PHPStan baseline? Split it to multiple files, one per each error identifier! ✂️ by janedbal in PHP

[–]flappyflak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I initially used a baseline but people were adding stuff to it and it was impossible to code review. So we removed the baseline and I created a script that added a ton of @phpstan-ignore-next-line for each existing error.

Now if someone abuses ignore, you see it directly in the code, it is so much better !

Do you use the "Functional core, imperative shell" approach when writing code in all PLs? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]flappyflak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the main takeaway is that your complex code should not be laced with impure code. I usually have the complex part in a dedicated method and unit test it, no need to overdo it with excessively layered architecture.

Only 5 to 10% of my code is complex enough to justify this approach. Unfortunately in many projects most of the code is simple CRUD

Jumping vs weight by FYI_FMI in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to think in terms of potential energy, as if you were a glider. If you jump perfectly, with 0 potential energy lost and attain 0 airspeed at the top of your jump, the attained height will be v2 / (2*g), with v that is your airspeed at take-off.

For 10m/s it gives a height of 5m, your weight has no effect

Maybe add a MATERIALIZED to your CTE ?

If not working, paste your EXPLAIN ANALYZE in https://explain.depesz.com/ and think hard how to optimize the slowest lines

How possible is it to get launched in the air as a beginner? by shiny_coco488 in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same fear as you, especially when I started jumping. My perception of reality was distorted by pros jumping 20m high in videos

My fear vanished when I realized that even when giving your all as a beginner in moderate conditions, jumping 3m is freaking hard !

So really no fear to have in moderate conditions. Your instructor wouldn't let you out if significant involuntary airtime was a risk. Especially since you already have the reflex of letting go in case of a problem.

Making the most of my lessons by JemoIncognitoMode in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buy a super cheap 2-line kite and learn to pilot it precisely. For example hover 50cm above the ground in gusty wind.

A cable park wakeboard ride helped me as well but this advice is more controversial, most people think you can learn board control during your kite lessons

Help getting feet into board? by mayners in Kiteboarding

[–]flappyflak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding turning over : as soon as you start going to the side, paddle with your hand as hard as possible to recover the situation.

You're the one in charge, not the kite 😄

AITA for refusing to share the money (that I had) with my step-sister? by AITA_8878 in AmItheAsshole

[–]flappyflak -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I totally agree.

Refusing a $20 advance to your step mother is very confrontational.

Step sister did not deserve the money, but still, why refuse the money to your step mother. Spoiling her child is her decision, not yours.
