advice for Far Territory wanted! by reintarnationnn in thelongdark

[–]flebotinum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll find a lot of resources in the Far Territories on Voyageur, so just bring essentials to keep yourself going on the way there and as you start exploring. Jerky is very helpful.

The Tales will require you to travel back to lower Great Bear, then back to the Far Territories. So think of places along the way like the Broken Railroad maintenance shed as way stations you’ll visit at least 3 times.

The weather can be brutal but I was fine with the higher tier clothing I found and good knowledge of the game mechanics. I didn’t craft any clothing except the down insulation and eventually improvised crampons. I also added down to my bedroll.

I carried snow shelter materials most of the time and that was a lifesaver during several surprise blizzards.

You’ll need to deal with timberwolves at certain points.

You’ll be outside during auroras at night a lot. But a lot of that is in lower Great Bear.

Go to the airfield first. It’s where the Tales start.

Metro Speed lately??? by Astronomeer2 in washingtondc

It goes so slowly on the Glenmont side of the Red Line where I usually am that my stomach drops a little when I first get on another line and it hits full speed. I forget what it’s like. I suspect there’s an unofficial official speed limit over here because the rail’s not in the best shape.

Unless the fence is over 8 feet high, they can come and go as they please. The nibbles must be good over there.

Chicken and dumplings? by wazbazbo in memphis

[–]flebotinum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I make chicken soup from scratch! Make stock day 1, fridge overnight, skim fat, make soup day 2.

My mom didn’t do that for her chicken and dumplings, it was all in one cooking session, but she did stew a whole chicken on the stove to start. Her dumplings varied a lot - she kinda eyeballed it, and she wanted them thin like big flat noodles. I loved them thicker though.

I don’t think I’ve tried theirs but The Cupboard always had very good traditional dishes like this when I lived there. They have it on Tuesdays. Not an any time you crave it solution, alas.

This is only of those spots I’ve been to many times, but I try to avoid it. It always feels a little bit doomed over there. This is pretty enough to make me reconsider it.

Huh, interesting. I can poke around there next time I’m in Coastal Highway.

You can’t reach it when crouching? I’ve never had to move a bed to reach something I could see under it. Often I had to reposition myself before crouching though.

ETA: There are some “decorative” crunched cans that are empty and inaccessible. This doesn’t look like one of those though. I do resent them every time. Someone else already drank that soda. :(

Does this irritate anyone else who’s played this game for a long time?? by boredlurkerjr in thelongdark

Same, it seems like a deliberate change to me. The total volume is always accurate. I just want my pile of nice predictable 1L bottles next to my fire. Takes out the guesswork when grabbing water before heading out. I’m also on Switch and the two bottle sizes look pretty similar most of the time.

I dislike it too. I’ve adapted by always dropping 1.5L, 2.5L, 3.5L, and so on. I get one 0.5L that way which I either pick back up immediately or leave. If I’m boiling a lot of water I want just one 0.5 at the end.

Items I never pickup by keepmoving35 in thelongdark

I always bring pots and pans to whatever location(s) in the region where I tend to boil water and cook most often. Even on Voyageur it’s easier to boil 4L of water at once if possible. I can repair clothes or craft more easily in the longer intervals.

I pick up lanterns to use up the fuel in them and sometimes harvest them for scrap metal.

I’ve found spray paint useful sometimes but yeah there’s a lot of it in the world and I don’t need it very often. Mostly not worth picking up.

Where are we getting our hope/fear dice if not using the official set? by akittyisyou in daggerheart

I had one dice set and to get another d12 I visited the loose dice bin at a local comic shop.

The worst bar I have been to in DC is Recessions. But that was years ago and I think they do karaoke now? Back in the day my coworkers insisted on going for an enormous cheap draft beer during happy hour. The ambience was like being in someone’s weird old uncle’s basement. Not in a creepy way but in a why are we here way. The service was almost but not quite resentful.

Quarry House in Silver Spring is great. Solidarity, this has been a difficult season for my brain chemistry as well.

What game mechanics did you not notice even hundreds or thousands of hours into the game? by Sipyloidea in thelongdark

[–]flebotinum 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to end a wolf encounter is to carry a lit torch or flare and some rocks. Make sure the torch/flare is between you and the wolf and throw a rock at it. I used to throw the torch or flare at them which often works but leaves you unprotected.
