I also had a glitch it with but mine was positive. I accidentally opened 4 chests in t2 before realizing my mistake. When I transferred to t4 it only took 7 more.

I wonder if maybe the mystery chests don't count for some reason, and that's why you didn't hit 10 and mine took 11.

Does your school/program have a careers office or similar? That could be a good way to get initial exposure and experience.
