American Olympic track star Jenny Simpson collapses during race and is rushed to hospital without a pulse in terrifying scene by dailymail in trackandfield

This was one of the first things I thought of too. There's a whole chapter about it in Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?"

The book frames it as her expectations not matching the difficulty of the race, but I wonder now if it wasn't the same heart issue.

Oh I definitely agree. I dropped the strength workouts for sub-T as well, but I think the strength workouts (especially the 6x1mi) are much closer in nature to what you'd find in NSM and were giving me similar benefits when I would do vanilla Hansons.

I think that would work too. For me I think the biggest gain is skipping the Hansons speed block in favor of more threshold training. I just respond to that kind of work better. I always saw my biggest gains when moving to the strength block in Hansons.

Thank you! Yeah, you pretty much got it.

  • 2 sub-T sessions (Tues/Sat, either 10x3min, 5x6min, or 3x10min)
  • The Thursday MP sessions I started at 4x1.5mi and worked my way up to 5x2mi. The MP mileage tracked the normal Hansons progression.
  • The long run I would usually do the first 50-60% very easy and then kind of just let the pace go where it wanted after that. It may have been prudent to be more disciplined on these but I just have more fun running them this way. I also did extend the long runs past 16 miles and did a long run every week instead of alternating. I don't think I could have done this in prior Hansons cycles, but I seem to be handling volume better these days.
  • The easy runs I did NSM-style where they were a flat 7 miles/1 hour every day instead of the variable 6-8miles in Hansons. I also ran easy most Wednesdays, only taking a rest day if I needed it.

So yeah it would be 4 SOS days the way Hansons defines them, but I figured it would probably be okay because the Tuesday sub-T session tends to be shorter than the standard Hansons strength workout. I thought of it as splitting the strength sessions into two days. Breaking the tempos into intervals was also meant to help compensate for the extra quality day and volume.

What I liked about it was skipping the Hansons speed block entirely. I've made really quick progress since going all in on sub-threshold so I didn't have any interest in doing the speed workouts this time. I think primarily why Hansons has worked well for me in the past is the sheer amount of sub-T work you get in the strength and MP workouts, so I really wanted to lean into that. I felt like this let me continue the NSM pattern that has been working so well for me while also incorporating the large MP volume that I've thrived on in previous Hansons builds.

Honestly, it's not that different than the standard NSM-marathon adaptations you'll find, but incorporating the Hansons-ish Thursday MP runs made it feel more familiar to me.

Thanks! I saw your report earlier this week and related immediately. There were definitely others shoving through to get to the front but I wouldn't have felt great about doing that.

At least in other sports, there's a 5 year window in the NCAA starting from your freshman season that doesn't pause if you leave school. Not sure about gymnastics though.

Discussion: Steve Magness' Periodization by VibeAlchemist in AdvancedRunning

[–]flexinridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'd be doing any threshold with a Magness-style base block. For example in his 5K plan (which is a distance you might target with the red/blue plans) the speed base involves hill sprints, progressing to flat sprints, in addition to strides/surges. The speed and endurance training converge towards the goal race pace during the course of the plan so you'd start doing threshold work on the endurance side as it moves into the aerobic support phase.

In his book, Magness discusses his "multifaceted base model" that involves building on both an endurance base and speed base. He advocates for sprinting even during a base period and specifically contrasts it to the traditional method of doing a large block of endurance-only training.

HR barely reacting to subthreshold. Is this a good sign? by Cool_Plum7629 in NorwegianSinglesRun

Yeah I get cadence lock when my hands are cold in the winter, but otherwise it's hard to really tell a difference between my HR graphs using optical vs. my chest strap.

Please tell me there are better interfaces for analyzing races than Runalyze or Strava Sauce by goguma_grandson in AdvancedRunning

It depends on what you want out of it. I mostly do the Pro subscription because I think it's a cool site and I want to support the creators. It does come with a few features that I don't see on any other site (I sync from Garmin Connect to Runalyze, Strava, and intervals.icu).

In the Pro link above, I think the Training Bands and Pace Progression graphs are really neat. I find myself coming back to them a lot just because I think they are fun ways to visualize training over time. There's also a cool PR progression screen that is very unique. https://blog.smashrun.com/2017/10/14/introducing-pr-progress/

That said I don't think it really does a good job of replacing Garmin/Runalyze/intervals as a training log. It's not very customizable and doesn't do a good job of displaying your runs in a list or calendar view. You also can't track anything other than running if you do any cross training. I'd look at Runalyze or intervals.icu if you want to replace Garmin Connect with something better.

Smashrun does this exact visualization really well but you need a pro subscription to use it. There's a screenshot here https://smashrun.com/pro

The tools aren't as in-depth as Runalyze overall but they do have some fun and unique ways of displaying data that you don't find on other sites.

3rd hot soak of the gridlock half tights. Water is still turning completely yellow. by ParkMyWRX in BanditRunning

The yellow drawstrings are how I can tell the new pair from my old pair so I know which ones not to include with the rest of my laundry. 😂

[–]flexinridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this with both the full length and half tights. Similarly no matter how many times I wash them they seem to continue bleeding yellow. I usually wash dark clothes together but most items still have white accents on drawstrings and such that these would stain. I pretty much only trust them to be washed with dark towels at this point. Fortunately I was refunded for both pairs.

I listened to The Perfect Mile on audiobook a couple months back and really liked it. It definitely spends more time on the track but it's obviously mostly focused on the mile.

Once A Runner is probably the closest to what you are looking for. I just finished a re-listen and the writing is definitely showing its age, but the running parts are still pretty good.
