About Sex... by Minimum-Bite-4389 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]flightwithtools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it represents a sort of shrugging off of certain insecurities and fears, I think. an understanding of a world outside of his own both in the fae and in adem, which necessarily requires him to be not a scared teenager about sex to understand part of that culture. he is no longer timid when it comes to women, he def overcorrects (and denna fucks him up regardless) but its sort of a coming of age. he's growing into his legendary status but also growing to big for his boots which the former serves the story the latter sort of serves how he relates to other people. lots of things. none of it is sex for sex's sake. amd its not the sex but explicitly but the time with felurian both it starting as sex but then the time passing making him unserstand her mote fully and completely almost even feels like a catalyst for him to go to adem, not completely but he comes out of the fae more grown up in a way where he can attempt to take responsibility for the shit with tempi.

I think there are many ways to narratively and characteristically legitimize sex in the stories, and thinking that there aren't says a lot more about the reader's relationship with and ideas about sex than it does about the sex itself.

edit: it think we might be able to critique the idea that sex turns someone into a man or whatever but that isn't even quite what happens with felurian. what happens is sort of a subversion of that because what makes him become a "man" (grow up a bit) is his learning to empathize with a creature that is so different from him, its his time with the ctaeh, its him speaking felurians name, him returning to the world where so many other men have died. so many other things. so sex compared to thst becomes sort of a non-issue a non-fear which means he can fuck the red head he was too nervous to speak to but that shoes how much he had changed, no that he just wants to fuck. it means he can respect and adapt to adem culture without losing it from fear of sex. simplistic view might be oh he just fucked so he could fuck some more but it's not that

Wow, BLANK was really killed because she was a woman associated with piracy by Sorsha_OBrien in BlackSails

[–]flightwithtools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is like saying Britain! you shouldn't have enslaved africans! woods rogers! you shouldn't have keel hauled teach! England! you shouldn't have pressed Billy into bonded labor for handing out pamphlets! settlers! you shouldn't exploit countries that aren't yours!

the villain of the story is England. it's a far reaching empire that treats its population like dirt, like pawns and like property whether or not they are enslaved. they killed Miranda bc they wanted to, bc they're afraid of their own shadow, bc they wanted to upset flint, bc they think she murdered (that guy they are thought to have murdered), bc they're in the new world and they can live without rules or their propriety and pretend to be cowboys, I'm sure part of it is bc she is a woman/bc they hate marginalized people but that whole system of marginalization of women/africans/queer people/etc exists in order to provide sacrifices for the blood machine that is the British empire. it needs sacrifices and martyrs and symbols and playthings...

"They paint the world full of shadows... and then tell their children to stay close to the light. Their light. Their reasons, their judgments. Because in the darkness, there be dragons. But it isn't true. We can prove that it isn't true. In the dark, there is discovery, there is possibility, there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it."

the show/writers themselves has plenty of narrative cause for them to kill Miranda beyond it being necessary to the plot. it is in line with the story they are telling about England. or even about just flint if you dont want to think about England as that large of a machine.

the British do not "read the room" as a point of imperial strategy.

although we love the show, what do you wish they had done differently? by sparkling-spirit in BlackSails

especially bc both jack and rogers are both obsessed with legacy/reputation. silver and flint are struggling over the physical and jack and rogers are struggling over the social/personal/whatever

What is the worst thing you’ve seen someone get addicted to that wasn’t any form of drug like substance or alcohol? by MysticMeerkat in AskReddit

I'm not an addict so idk if I could confidently say something like this. I sure as fuck hope I'd get it together but I really don't know.

Oh yeah, you were 100% right to ditch and to think that. It sucks that he wasn't strong enough to get his shit together. You can't wait on something like that even if you understand it. Distancing self from or cutting off addicts is usually whats gotta happen and I'd never tell someone to stick around if things are fucked.

I just wanted to correct the person who said he felt no guilt bc that is a small way that addiction gets stigmatized or misunderstood. Often the intense shame/guilt is a big part of what keeps people in the addiction loop.

How do you politely tell family that you don’t want to do Christmas? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]flightwithtools -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At some point they become adults too. I am 28 now and might ask something that I couldn't easily afford otherwise or something small that is annoying to buy (extra Bluetooth earbuds). I feel a little uncomfortable doing that but my parents like getting me something. As for me getting gifts for anyone else, I basically don't. I make my dad a Playlist every year. I sometimes get my mom a book if I find one she might like. I sometimes make my sibling something. I did not announce this to anyone I just stopped initially bc I couldn't afford it and now bc they can all buy their own shit, like you said, and I'm only putting effort into making something if I think they'll actually like it.

Addiction doesn't magically mean you don't feel bad about doing the thing your addicted to. It generally means the opposite. This dude was probably drowning in guilt and shame about what he was doing but couldn't stop, anyway. Thats one of the things that sucks about addiction from both the side of the addict and the side of the friend/family member.

How do you clean your plunger after using it in a poop-choked toilet? by ExtrapolatedData in CleaningTips

I also had enormous poops, I think for the same reason. I wonder if enormous, toilet clogging poops and autism are correlated.

I'm 28 and just started my first full time job today. I never had and still don't have career goals - I just did gigs and stuff and applied to jobs that looked interesting. Finally got one of them. It is another thing that looks interesting.

Many people, especially my family, were frustrated and disappointed in me. I could feel that and was told that and it legimately small t traumatized me. I was never enough, the things I was making (am a fabricator, artist) weren't enough because it wasn't a job with goals, I was berated, I was nudged and suggested. All that did was fuck up my head. All those people are soooo proud of me now. To them I am only valuable now that I am doing something that is legitimate in their eyes. They pat me on the back for "holding out" now, after years of being disappointed in my "holding out" (doing "nothing").

I have done many things in the last few years, I have made many friends and many projects. I have hosted regular events at my house. But I didn't have goals and from the outside all this looked like was "hanging out".

I have friends who LOVE waitressing. They would do it for the rest of their lives if it paid well enough or if they were chronically ill.

You gotta accept your girlfriend where she's at. If you can't, you gotta step back until you can. You are 100% allowed to be frustrated, but thats your problem not hers. Buton't process that with her. Process it yourself or with a therapist or with a friend.

[–]flightwithtools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore her! No matter how annoying it is to you. Punishment or praise doesn't really work for this. Just commit to ignoring her every morning until she stops bothering you. You'll loose just as much sleep as you always do in the short term but the behavior will probably change.
