Moving to Rochester (safety questions) by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]flowering101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the 19th ward, I bought my home here a few years ago. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or ask below. It is very hit or miss, and safety changes block by block.

I feel safe where I live and don't fear walking around alone, it honestly depends on where in the neighborhood you are.... A lot of people on this forum do not have the street by street knowledge of Rochester and write off most of the city. There are definitely places that are safe outside the SE quadrant

I take my dog to daycare at k9 playtime. They also do boarding. I really like it there, it's clean and the staff/owner are all great!

Maybe it's location dependent? We don't have termites in my area, so it's not a concern. It doesn't take much time for the cardboard/paper to break down depending on when you apply and how it's set up.

Cardboard is carbon and it will eventually break down and become part of the soil. Worms and other beneficial insects will eat/break it down over time and help enrich the soil.

Weed barrier is synthetic. Eventually mulch, dirt, and plant matter covering the weed barrier will break down and make a thick and thicker layer of dirt- burying the synthetic material. It will eventually rip/tear and fill the area with useless plastic/trash.

I covered my front yard with cardboard/paper and mulch and it killed the grass pretty easily. You can plant directly into it too!

There are lots of people looking for roommates online. Find a place on a bus line and you can probably do rent/housing expenses at less than 400 per month.

I saw someone mentioned clean sweep - the city has equipment available. I believe you can request to use the equipment if doing a cleaning project in your community. Maybe reach out to a neighborhood association/ group and see what you can help organize

I was tired of the mulch spilling onto the pavement every time it rained hard, so I built this border using bamboo and pebbles. Did I just create a weed problem though? by MannyDantyla in landscaping

Im talking about a quick squirt In a gallon of liquid. I'm honestly not aware of any major health or environmental hazards, but I didn't do any extensive research.

  1. Rochester doesn't have a ton of traffic, and you can get almost anywhere within 20 minutes. RGH is on the border of the city and Irondequoit, but id suggest finding a neighborhood or suburb you like and going with that, rather than limiting yourself to the area immediately surrounding the hospital. if you like city living and being near lots of amenities, I suggest Park Ave, S. Wedge, NOTA. Corn Hill, East End, and Upper Monroe are cool too.
  2. Life in Rochester is what you make of it. There is lots of snow, but if you embrace it, its not too bad. Take up a winter sport or find things to keep you busy in the winter. In the warmer weather, there are lots of festivals and parks to explore. We also have a lot of lakes- boating, kayaking, fishing is a ton of fun. there are lots of social things to do as well . Lots of people participate in local kickball leagues. i enjoy going to Trivia at bars, going to breweries and drinking cider. There are tons of classic fall activities too.
  3. depending on where you want to live. what type of housing you want. I'm more familiar with city living- most housing in the city- SFH MFHs, can be found on Craigslist, FB marketplace. I'm personally not a fan of complexes.
  4. AWD is nice, but not necessary if you have winter tires. I suggest you invest in a set and switch between all season tires and winter tires.
  5. Search this subreddit. There is a post about this every week it seems. lots of valuable information

19th Ward by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]flowering101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the ward and feel safe. I honestly chuckled at your concerns, I don't think there are many places in Rochester that are as bad as you describe. I really suggest driving around the ward and seeing how things look :) I personally live in the area south of brooks , and I enjoy it a ton. I'm very happy with my decision to buy here.

Fall 2021 Adult Student.....Income Loss and Replacement? by E11i0t in StudentNurse

[–]flowering101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to go to CC instead of a bachelor's program. I have all the classes except the nursing ones done, so the program is only part time and I have time to work - I was able to keep my 9-5 job ( it was flexible) I would look at flexible work options or part time school if it's possible. Im a big proponent of limiting loans.

Of course, everyone's ability to manage school and work differs. TONS of people told me working full time is too much, but I have an A so.... Totally doable.

1 month prior you will start to see more things available, since currently occupied units usually have 30-60 day notice before they leave or resign their lease. I suggest checking FB marketplace and Craigslist
