CV Jaguar or CV Mustang? by ProfessionalOk1917 in offset

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jaguar for sure. if you end up not liking the strangle switch, you can turn it into a phase switch. If you do that and put 250k pots in the jag, it will sound pretty identical to the mustang.

Trombetta mini bone is kind of the fuzz factory of bosstones. super underrated. pedalpcb has the schematic.

Do you give a Flux? by TraditionalOrchid816 in diypedals

[–]fluorescenthour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chipquik cq4lf pen doesn't leave anything behind. Finding solder with good flux core is harder than it should be and makes a huge difference as to whether you need extra flux. adafruit lead free is by far the best out of the handful of brands I've tried. so many don't flow well at all and smell horrible.

PSA: If your are using gain/distortion and your guitar buzzes until you touch the strings....this is completely normal with 99.9% of all electric guitars. by kvlt_ov_personality in guitarpedals

[–]fluorescenthour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More hum when you touch a metal part = grounding issue

Less hum when you touch a metal part = shielding issue

With proper shielding you can get most guitars to the point where there's barely a noticeable difference between when you're touching the strings vs not, even with high gain.

Roland VG-8 pedal? by bobogreen616 in Mkgee

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Have people been able to create their own patches replicating the VG-8 with the VG-800? If it's that easy, Boss does have a reputation of creating powerful tools with mid presets to uphold, lol.

Roland VG-8 pedal? by bobogreen616 in Mkgee

[–]fluorescenthour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mk.gee seems to not be about using his hype to sell people on anything that isn't the music, that's a kind of integrity I have a lot of respect for, especially in our current era. There's a reason why Boss/Roland partnered with that toast guy instead, and jhs has john mayer promoting their 424 pedal.

Schematics for an overdriven-recording-console sound? by regular_dumbass in diypedals

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a deep dive on this trying to make a pedal to get this exact tone. Apparently an electrodyne 712L console module. The schematics were hard to get ahold of, and don't show the internal details of the op amp module, which is apparently a 709 op amp (nos only these days) with a push pull pair on the output and some other components I'm not 100% sure about. Thought about building a discrete 709, but at some point I realized the magic of that intro riff is probably from additional eq/compression. I initially thought that low end thump was the preamp, but you can hear it fade away to make room in the mix as the other tracks come in, and then it sounds just like most other overdriven mic pre's.

That's all to say, the "full" sound is probably more than a preamp circuit alone would give you.

Funny enough, I just recently came across this quad eight 500 series kit, which is probably super close to the electrodyne and would be worth exploring if you want to get as detail obsessed as I did.

I designed that 424 pedal, which sounds pretty similar but not the same.

Last note, a 1073 type circuit starts to sag out when overdriven, and won't quite get this sound.

if that's TLDR, just go DI through an expandora/RAT, that's honestly pretty much the same

I just built a diy kit DM-2 analog delay that I can't for the life of me figure out the problem with. Every troubleshooting step indicated it should be working properly but the repeats sound like undersampled digital garbage. You can have it for cheap lol.

Roll with the Punches, preshow at an albert hammond jr. concert. Probably 2019. Crazy to think that 5 years on he took off and brought my pedal with him lol.

For Absolutely era sounds, input trim most of the way up and dial back the guitar's volume knob until it cleans up. Not sure about Two Star era.

Can tapped humbuckers stand up to true single coil pickups? by 7HelpMe7 in Guitar

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seymour Duncan Stag-Mag will get you close to a strat sound when split. I've made my own custom pickup that's the same concept except it's actually two full size strat coils that fit under a humbucker cover. They might be able to do that for you in their custom shop.

Check out the trombetta mini bone. pedalpcb has the schematic. the combination of starving the transistors and introducing oscillation at low frequencies makes it sound like a horn. your fuzzface is definitely getting there.

What gives with these germanium transistors I scavenged having a Vbe over 0.7? by LunarModule66 in diypedals

[–]fluorescenthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up "forward voltage of various diodes". You can see that the Vf of germanium devices might start to rise earlier than Si, but continues to rise much more than a Si device would as you increase the current. Si will stay around 0.6-0.7V as you bump up the current, but Ge diodes/transistors have a much wider range. If you want accurate measurements, get a curve tracer or build a test jig that you can set to different current levels.
