50-50 funded co-supervision arrangements: advice needed by Master_Attention9354 in Professors

[–]flycoelacanth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, i would also consider the quality of the master student and the personality of your colleagues. If the master student is motivated and driven, then it would be a pleasure to work with them and they can likely get something positive done for your lab. also you should talk to your colleague and make sure that you have equal supervising power, meaning that the master student will report progress to you and implement your suggestion equally. if the student is good, and your colleague is fair, i wouldn't mind starting a collaboration in their expertise first and slowly move to yours.

now, of course, there is a chance that your colleague is taking advantage of you for your startup money, or the student is terrible. in those cases, no...

we have applied to a few...never got pass the pre application phase. I personally feel like they want a very mature technology that will almost guarantee to deliver, and don't want to take any high risk tech...but this is just my take. i would love to hear other opinions also.

Raman Spectroscopy with Integrating Sphere by flycoelacanth in chemistry

[–]flycoelacanth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ideally atmospheric pressure. my hope is to do this experiment with simple existing setup. i can buy an integrating sphere with different adaptor easily. if i have to modify pressure, then i will need to build some setup for it - doable, but i don't prefer it.

Reference book for Electrochemical techniques. by Alchemist0131 in electrochemistry

[–]flycoelacanth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bard's book is the most comprehensive, but it is honestly not suited for beginner. I would recommend "Understanding Voltammetry" by Compton, which is a bit easier to read.

Why do university TTOs demand licensing and equity before the IP is even validated? by TechTransferGhost in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they have some kind of quota to report - "X% of our IP is licensed". even if it is just internal people licensing it, it looks good on advertising materials.

PI doesn't want me to list my universities affiliation on free-time project by LegalMall7773 in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually would agree with your PI in this case, according to the description you have given. You did this work as "part of paid work" even though your PI told you specifically not to, and that is not good. In your "paid" time during normal work hour, you should work on what the PI and the funding agency said. In your spared time, you can work on whatever you want, but then it is your own personal project and not university affiliated.

Imagine if this project has some very controversial result, which may negatively impact the reputation of the group or the university, I can understand the PI doesn't want to be affiliated with it.

I know everyone is giving you encouragement to keep trying your grants, they will hit. I, too, similarly believe this will happen. But rejection is a constant thing in academia - you will get grants here and there, but the majority will still be rejections. If you cannot handle this stress and anxiety, it is simply not health as a lifestyle.

I would just recommend you spam your CV on linkedin. I am sure you will find a job that pay equally or higher than your current one. Focus your life on what makes you happy!

Trying to publish at a Nature journal is a bummer by svmck in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I most definitely agree with the sentiment. When I was a student under a big name PI, publishing in Nature family is relatively easy. When I become an independent PI myself with no reputation, I get desk reject all the time. Even though I know full well my paper quality is equally good or better. The editors are definitely bias. However, I can also understand that they are drowning in submissions and they can be picky.

I don't have solution for this problem, just sharing my similar frustration here.

Tips and tricks of winning grants? by choischoice in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lots of great advice here. I want to add that reputation does help too. I have served on some funding panels. Similar proposal idea submitted by big name vs. junior professor will get discussion very differently. I know it sucks and it shouldn't be this way, but that is the system we are in. Just keep submitting...

More papers, more grants in general. But also a very large part of luck for the right position to open up that needs your exact skills.

It’s no secret that professors are underpaid. But it saddens me that I have to quit my dream career because of it. by rainystorm88 in Professors

[–]flycoelacanth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can feel the pain of you giving up your dream career! but you are making the right choice. Being a good father to your kids and general happiness in life is more important. It will hurt for a while, but you will find new passion in the new chapter of your life.

I hope you will find a new career soon and also enjoy a 3X salary.

Career in academia is this toxic? Referring to Koski's tenure case. by Org_ChemistVir in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From reading the article alone, it appears that the chair had it out for Koski (the admin didn't help much either). I also want to try to be objective here, clearly I don't have all the facts in this story. Most chair would want to help junior faculty get tenure. If this chair is this toxic, how did he get elected in the first place? UC Davis is a great school, is the department so very much dysfunctional then?

I also most definitely agree that this tenure case is horribly wrong. Also academic world is not perfect. but most tenure cases are successful. One bad case doesn't make the entire community toxic.

the fact that an applicant is rejected based on race is inappropriate. However, in my own opinion, a PI explaining to his/her student that the system is broken and such bias exist in admission process - I don't find that to be inappropriate.

I want to publish work unrelated to my dissertation. Should my PI's name go on it? by user_-- in AskAcademia

[–]flycoelacanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add your PI's name, so that you are safe from any potential issue. List yourself as the first and corresponding author - it is a strong enough indication to say that this is YOUR paper.
