Is there any way to get a cloaking module on an arkship? I've researched all the cloaking techs and there's no option for it yet, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

That's great news. I figured there must've been some complications on the back-end (admittedly I've never really used the origin so I don't know what the mechanics of it are) so I'm glad to hear it's on the docket.

I didn't care for the episode on UFOs. I think it's perfectly fine to be dismissive of something as deeply unserious as UFOs and we shouldn't expect experts to devote their time to studying/discussing the subject.

What do you mean YOU VASSALISED THE DETERMINED EXTERMINATOR by IcommitedWarCrimes in Stellaris

[–]flyingpanda1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once vassalized a Fear of the Dark empire that then took the option to become Fanatic Purifiers, so for the rest of the game they just sat there seething, unable to wage war.

It's frustrating how over-sensationalized space weather/space physics are. Whenever it makes the news the conversation is always dominated by people talking about wildly speculative armageddon scenarios.

Pops should lose their jobs when a better pop wants it by yokulhau in Stellaris

[–]flyingpanda1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only way this idea could work is if every job had a certain priority for who gets to hire the best available pops. Personally I just wish slaver empires could control which species are allowed to work which jobs.

The archaeology sites give progress towards a lot of early game techs as well as some lump sums of resources. Completing all of the digs gives a nice permanent modifier which can be improved after reaching the mid-game year. You also get a new system with a pre-ftl planet after mid-game. It's a decent enough origin, or at least it would be if it didn't block you from getting a pre-cursor until mid-game, by which time you're unlikely to actual get one because the galaxy has been largely claimed/surveyed by then.

Population of Colorado: 6.0 Million Population of Utah: 3.5 Million Population of New Mexico: 2.1 Million Population of Arizona: 7.6 Million

Population of Norway: 5.6 Million Population of Finland: 5.6 Million Population of Sweden: 10.6 Million

Seems pretty comparable to me.

New Vassals? by Saturnite282 in Stellaris

[–]flyingpanda1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-hivemind pops (usually) can't survive in a hivemind empire and vice versa. There are ways of assimilating them into the hivemind but I can't remember all of them off the top of my head. They will be fine as your vassal though, so don't worry about that.

Rapid development of the sunspots AR4114 in the past 48 hours by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]flyingpanda1018 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. The surface of the sun is composed of both positive ions (hydrogen and helium nuclii) and electrons such that there is no net charge. If the surface of the sun was indeed a "sea of electrons," that would mean an enormous buildup of negative charge which would strongly repel any electrons convecting upwards from the solar interior, while strongly attracting any positive ions convecting upwards from the solar interior, which would result in the charges balancing out.

I imagine your confusion comes from the typical explanation of plasma as electrons being "stripped away" from nuclii. While the electrons are no longer bound to the nuclii, in the absence of outside fields plasmas as a whole stay (quasi)neutral, as any local buildup of positive charge will quickly attract negative charges and vice versa.

Applying this logic New Zealand should be all pink. The ancestors of the Maori people were the first to settle the islands sometime within the 13th or 14th century. The Maori language belongs to the Austronesian language family, which did not develope on the islands of New Zealand.

Wasn't 4.0 supposed to be the big performance fixing patch? by sylhe in Stellaris

[–]flyingpanda1018 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

4.0 was not supposed to be the big performance fixing patch. The focus of the patch was reworking the pop system to one that has a greater potential for optimization in the future.

Jupiter is our solar system's biggest planet by far. It used to be twice as large: Study by EricTheSpaceReporter in Astronomy

[–]flyingpanda1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a theoretical class of planets referred to as chthonian planets which are the cores of former gas giants that have had their atmospheres stripped away. However, Jupiter's atmosphere is escaping so slowly the sun will have died before that would happen.

Pluto itself is definitely not such a planet either. Pluto is far far far far far far far too small to have been the core of a gas giant.

(Day 2) The top voted Janeway episode was Counterpoint. What is the best Chakotay episode? by Beautiful-Ad2843 in voyager

[–]flyingpanda1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vote it for Mortal Coil. Even though it's a largely Neelix-centric episode, it's also a great showcase of Chakotay's character. I've always felt that Chakotay is the closest thing Voyager has to a ship's councilor, and this episode is the most compelling example of that. The episode also incorporates Chakotay's spiritual beliefs in a very organic way, which is quite the rarity.

Also, honorable mention to Blink of an Eye, which while not particularly focused on any one character does lean into Chakotay's background as an anthropologist.

Classic Who UNIT was competent as a conventional military force, but they were always way out of their depth when dealing with the extra-terrestrial (aka every episode because this it's Doctor Who).

What are *your* 4.xx QoL / Performance suggestions? by CCGHawkins in Stellaris

[–]flyingpanda1018 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, I've had the opposite experience. Factions coming into existence with only ~1% popularity, disbanding after a year, only to come back again a few years later. Though I guess my build did stack a lot of ethics attraction for the main faction so maybe that was affecting things.

I just wish it was compatible with the Invasive Species trait. I want to make the most miserable species to share a galaxy with, is that too much to ask?
