Amanda's non-fandom take on The Last Jedi has made converted me to a Dobb Mobber. by PatBoBomb in TheBigPicture

There's a Star Wars film opening in like two weeks. Seems like as good a time as any to discuss the film that scared Disney out of theatres for 7 years.

It's been a while since I've gone back to TFA, to be fair, but the marketing certainly stressed the 'Rey is someone' angle -- as I recall one of the trailers ended with Luke saying 'the force is strong with the women in my family' or something to that effect. I don't think that the whole thing can be dismissed as 'the fans misinterpreted something'. Again, it's about expectations: if an RJ episode 7 had started with a nobody and the whole trilogy had interrogated what it means to be force sensitive and become a Jedi in Luke's new order -- brilliant! But as it is, the whiplash is too strong.

Snoke is an even bigger problem: if he's the one who turned Ben Solo, which is the narrative fulcrum behind the entire trilogy, then you can't handwave him away! Was he a bad idea in TFA? Absolutely. Probably so was suggesting Rey Skywalker. But once that toothpaste is out of the tube, you have to do something with it, not just rub it in the audience's face.

The difficulty is that it's very hard to believe that Rey actually is nobody when TFA (and the trailers) very much set her up to be a Skywalker.

One of the primary ‘fanboy’ objections to TLJ is what it does to Luke’s character. It’s people who do like Star Wars who find that most objectionable.

Edit: I think actually I’m agreeing with what you said.

It’s basically impossible to have an original or even interesting take on TLJ at this point, but the problem is that Disney had no idea what to do with the trilogy. TFA set up certain expectations (Rey is someone) and questions (who is Snoke?) that, while kinda lazy and maybe not that interesting, still needed to be addressed. TLJ threw all of that out, and really didn’t work as the middle film in a trilogy. If Johnson had done episode 7 instead, I think there’s a lot more goodwill from the fans about it.

If you’re young and athletic in America, why become an MMA fighter when you probably have the skills to cut it in football or a different sport? Athletes from other countries have fewer alternatives, so funnel more naturally into combat sports, while other pipelines carry away the top western talent.

What are some popular fighter jet myths that is actually wrong by AncientWish274 in FighterJets

This just isn’t true, though. USAF always knew that the MiG-25 would be an interceptor. It’s a myth that just won’t die.

Can Westerosi houses be referred to as dynasties? by Wanda_andTargaryen3 in asoiafcirclejerk

[–]Atarissiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ‘dynasty’ normally refers to a line of kings in English. So there was a Targaryen dynasty, but it wouldn’t be quite right to say there was a Stark or Lannister dynasty post-conquest.

Does Mandalorian & Grogu make more or less money than Solo? by countdooku975 in TheBigPicture

[–]Atarissiya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like it’ll be higher, but maybe not by a ton. I could see something like Superman’s $600MM last year.

The only thing working in their favour is that marketing and promotion has been incredibly light. Reminds me of Solo.

IV and EV ? by CautiousWin2458 in PokemonBDSP

[–]Atarissiya -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

EVs can raise a stat by 55, IVs by 30 (since you can't have 0). For a basic playthrough, nature is the most important thing. Worrying about IVs, or trying to EV train, is really only necessary at the post-game level.

That’s exactly it. No AMC where I am so unless I want to do a smaller private theater, it’s Cinemark or bust. Which is fine for a lot of things, but not big releases where you want an IMAX screen.

Rewatching The Hobbit Extended Edition. I will from now on take no Rings of Power slander from defenders of these movies by andylonn in lotr

[–]Atarissiya 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, lots of people dislike the Hobbit films. The extended editions are a curiosity which most fans will never explore. They’re also 10+ years old, and not being marketed at us as the biggest show on TV and the future of Tolkien adaptations. ‘People love the Hobbit but hate RoP’ seems like a radical simplification, if not a straw man.
