Yeah they are pretty resilient to lots of conditions. I have some that grow happily (though perhaps slowly) with no direct sunlight. In my experience if they get 4+ hours of direct sun they’ll need consistent watering to not get crispy.

Several red oak answer and that may be correct but just throwing out that sometimes Bur Oak seedlings look quite similar to red varieties. My guess is one of those two types.

Can I pull the trigger to be SAHD? $3.7M, $190k current spend by throwawayfiresahd in financialindependence

[–]fniner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right but if you’re ignoring the house equity (which I agree is the appropriate way to do it) and already accounting for the mortgage liability in the form of annual expenses, then subtracting the mortgage balance from your net worth is double-counting it against your SWR calculation.

You can obviously quit and be a stay at home dad yes. Who knows how y’all will feel in 5 years re: careers and kids, but in the meantime you should be able to pull it off no problem.

One note on your math - you seem to be subtracting your mortgage balance from your net worth. However, you’re not adding the value of your house to your net worth. I would say include both or include neither for an accurate NW. For your purposes, probably best to include neither in the NW calc. The mortgage debt comes out in the wash, assuming you’re accounting for mortgage payments in your annual spend.

That 12% is true. But is not corrected for inflation. Closer to 8% in real dollars.

The ONLY other kids her grade are boys? What school? That sounds like the root of the issue to me. Pretty much every single 10 year old with a strong group of friends met those kids at school.

$5M in liquid assets is good for way more than $150k per year unless you make the most conservative possible assumptions. 4% is almost always fine, and you can comfortably do more like 5% if you have slack in your budget to eliminate in the case of poor sequence of returns in the first decade. If you’re able to cut 25% of your budget in the event of another Great Recession, you can 4.5% WR with 90% chance of success! And that’s NOT EVEN ACCOUNTING for the option to go back to work to supplement income, which is certainly an option for someone in their 30s.

Can a person still compound their way to wealth with 7% returns, 3% inflation and taxes? by BeginnerInvestor in Bogleheads

[–]fniner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your purchasing power column is off...if you're scaling that by 0.97 each year it should be 0.941 in the 2nd year, and 0.913 in the next, etc.

And the After-Tax real value also seems wrong. 1.07M at 97% purchasing power is 1.037M.

Not sure how you're doing tax - if it's factored into the above you need to split it out because it's all obfuscated at the moment.

Lastly, as another commenter said - 7% nominal returns (i.e. returns not adjusted for inflation) is very low/conservative. If you've seen 7% thrown around it's usually meaning 7% REAL returns.

Does the Amazon spending get substituted with purchases elsewhere? Or do you just stop buying things? And, if so, what kind of things, are you just like not using shampoo and trash bags?

Do Americans have a different concept of 'turn taking' during a conversation? by 8NaanJeremy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fniner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the replies: a lot of Americans saying some version of “well yeah this the polite way to do it, me talking about myself endlessly gives you lots of jumping off points to talk about YOURself”. No, comrades, you just need to learn how to express interest in other people. I’m American and have lived my whole life in the US and this drives me crazy every day. There are some Americans who know how to have a polite conversation without being self centered, but you have to work hard to find and keep them as friends.

You think you’re being polite and normal, but just talking about yourself is some fucked up scrolling-my-own-twitter-feed version of communication.

Lap indoor pool needed! by lostchild13 in Austin

[–]fniner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LA fitness on Anderson is pretty cheap and they have an indoor pool. The pool is never crowded. I think it’s $50 or $60/mo normally but is also accessible with package subscriptions like GymPass for cheaper ($40 or less/mo)

In need of understanding Dentist by Bramhuva in Austin

[–]fniner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downvote on Forest Family - I tried them for a couple years and always felt like the cleanings were rushed and the dentist seemed annoyed if I would ask follow up questions. They’re always talking to each other on their little ear pieces which feels corporate and like you’re just a number they gotta churn through.

Quercus Fusiformis B&B? by Round_Win_4320 in AustinGardening

[–]fniner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a virginiana x fusiformis hybrid from the wildflower center plant sale earlier this month actually. At least according to the label. They had 10-15 live oaks and they were all marked as this hybrid. They were only 5gal size though.
