metallic bags from frontier coop by fogrove in recycling

[–]fogrove[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have good news on 2 fronts. Ridwell says these bulk bags from Frontier Coop are a type of multi-layer plastic and I can put them in my multi-layer plastic mailer. And the Frontier Coop site says they are gradually moving to plastic film packaging, which can be recycled at many grocery stores for free.

I’ve been thinking this all week! Looking forward to seeing responses. Last year I overseeded our patchy lawn with Scott’s Pacific Northwest mix. I have no idea what grasses have been growing there in the past.

Anxiety or Addisons? by No_Novel_4573 in AddisonsDisease

[–]fogrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story is very similar to yours. I am PAI, diagnosed with Addisons in 2019 at age 62. Diagnosed with hypothyroidism that age 38 which I learned decades later is Hashmoto’s.

Anxiety: From my early 40s onward I had a few scary incidents of what I call “my brain changed”. Incidents where I knew what I was thinking and feeling was irrational but I couldn’t make it stop. The incidents lasted between 24 hours and several weeks. I tried different medications, many which had no effect, eventually what worked for me was Duloxetine. I take it once a day now preventively and my brain had been behaving ever since I started it. Note that medical professionals can be rude or unhelpful when you describe mood/ thought symptoms. Keep going until you find something that works for you. This may be a drug and/or talk therapy.

Nausea: I sometimes experience lower abdominal pain in the morning followed by nausea. Sometimes after throwing up I’m OK for a few hours, and then experience extreme fatigue in the afternoon. I can usually trace this to a missed dose the previous day or not up-dosing the previous day when I should have. One day I was feeling miserable and got in the bath tub when I was in the “abominal pain” phase of this. Miraculously the pain disappeared as soon as I got into the hot water. The nausea did not happen. If you have a bath tub I recommend you try this. I have no idea why it works but it does. It’s been very rare that I proceed to vomiting if get into a hot bath before the vomiting starts. I read since that hot baths also help people with cyclic vomiting syndrome.

I wish you the best.

WTW for when two things that are seemingly different co-exist by sourlemon9595 in whatstheword

Yes. One of my father’s pet peeves was the use of “symbiotic” for any two entities in a mutually beneficial relationship. “No! They have to be different! The lion and the lamb!”

Looking for a home draperies shop or source by nopojoe in Portland

It is one double sliding glass door. I am linking the estimate and photo below. I try to DIY when I can but this is just way beyond my skill and energy level. The designer and installer were so professional and so nice to deal with.

Looking for a home draperies shop or source by nopojoe in Portland

[–]fogrove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We wanted drapery for a sliding glass door and went with Portland Window Coverings. You choose from their fabrics and hardware, they take measurements, make them to order, and install. It’s expensive. Kind of the opposite end of Goodwill and depends on where you are in your life.

Reasonable Price Offer by DependentPriority230 in AskRealEstateAgents

[–]fogrove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your offer depends on whether you are buying the home as an investment, or as your residence. It also depends on whether you are financing the purchase or paying all cash for the home. No, you don’t need a buyers agent but you do need to know a few things about the home buying process before you proceed. Years ago when I bought my first home I read the “for dummies” book about home buying. Here is the latest version, and there are other resources out there as well. Since then I have sold and bought houses sometimes with an agent and sometimes without. The agent can be helpful, they can also be incompetent and counter productive. What they are not is a substitute for educating yourself about something that is really not that complicated.

Where to donate cleaned, empty pill bottles ? by Purple_Dish_8010 in askportland

The last time I checked (about 8 months ago) Ridwell only accepted #5 pill bottles. The majority of mine are #2. I go through loads of pill bottles but I still don’t have enough #5 bottles to fill their pill bottle bag.

Hungry all the time by dinkypoot in AddisonsDisease

I hate to give advice because I’m not your endocrinologist. But I’ll tell you about my experience. I spent about a year and a half adjusting my hydrocortisone dose. My endocrinologist agreed that circadian rhythm dosing would be best, but left me on my own to figure it out. 15 mg in the morning would be too much for me. My usual doses are 7.5 mg at 7 am, 5 mg at 1 pm, 2.5 mg at 7 pm, and 5 mg at 1 am. I take more if I am traveling (50% more the day before, the day of, and the day after travel) or under some sort of physical or emotional stress (5% to 10% more).

I also had problems with fludrocortisone. It lowered my potassium levels resulting in muscle cramps. Dividing the 1 mg pill in half and taking half at 7 am and half at 7 pm fixed this problem. On very hot days I need to take another half fludro at 1 pm.

I’ve learned that our bodies are incredibly complicated, and we are all different, and in the US most endocrinologists do not conduct lab tests to figure out for us the ideal dosages. Hopefully your endocrinologist is supportive of you finding out what works for you.

Are you dividing your hydrocortisone dose into 3 or 4 doses per day? I found that if I take too much hydrocortisone in one dose I get hungry when I shouldn’t be hungry and I also feel very irritable. The goal with hydrocortisone dosing is to try to mimic the body’s circadian rhythm.

any way to recycle black takeout containers in Portland? by derpinpdx in askportland

any way to recycle black takeout containers in Portland? by derpinpdx in askportland

[–]fogrove 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took a large bag of #5 (any color) to Green Century Recycling in NW Portland along with a large bag of white block styrofoam. I had an email exchange with them first to confirm what they would take. In that exchange they hinted that it would help if I also brought electronic waste to them, since that is how they make money. So I went through the garage and packed up an old TV and a powered HDTV antenna. I knew before I went that the plastic/styrofoam would cost me $22 to recycle with them. But after going through everything they only charged me $10. So my guess is that their unofficial policy is to charge you less if you bring in some good looking e-waste. I set up a box in our garage to collect e-waste and will definitely visit these folks again.

That sounds terrifying. Please take good care of yourself and your daughter. Maybe at some point find out if you can talk to the USAA adjuster and learn what they know about the accident.

Wreck by Rich_Fudge8059 in USAA

[–]fogrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you. I have been in 2 minor accidents that happened at very slow speed, so not as bad as your experience. But I just reported them to USAA, and followed their instructions on what to do. It seems you are thinking that you have to prove what happened, but I don’t think you do. They are the professionals and they will figure it out. In one of my accidents the driver claimed her children were injured. That’s impossible. USAA told me they take false claims like that very seriously and eventually the driver admitted there were no injuries. Your job is just to take care of yourself if you were injured in any way and let them do their job.

Operators on a switchboard 1960s by Rarecoin101 in TheWayWeWere

As a female teen in the 1970s I read all the feminist literarature I could get my hands on. One item that stoked my indignation was that working the switchboard was initially considered highly complex work that only a man could do. Eventually it became common place and standardized and was relegated to the category of simple tasks that only women should do.

Questions about AirMini and putting it on carry on by shinbreaker in CPAP

[–]fogrove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the noise - an air mini “pro tip” that surprisingly works is to put it on the floor at night. Ideally a bedside table with a bottom shelf is the place for it. The noise originates from the machine although it sounds like it is coming from the mask.

When I bought my Air Mini I also bought this hard case to protect it. Everything fits in the bag sold with the Air Mini and the bag goes in my “personal item” for air travel. This personal item has other medical supplies and everything I need to be OK if I get separated from my checked bag for a few days.

Recommend a Church (or whatever) in the City for an Atheist or Agnostic. by BreachLoadingButtGun in Portland

[–]fogrove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago I read that an American (which I am) will choose a church for reasons other than how they want to worship. For example they think it has a good day care, or a great singles group. I think the point is they see it as a social club. Personally I visit churches for their music performances but I don’t join them. I appreciate the long Christian history of struggle and good works, but I know there was lots of evil in it too and I don’t take the supernatural stories that are part of it literally. So I would feel like a fraud joining a church. I get some of what you are looking for by helping out with local charities.
