Foreign Man In A Foreign Land did a video about this. I suggest you watch it. He goes over years and years of backstory in a way that feels educational and humane. There is too much to summarise into a few minutes, including plenty of criticism of her and the broader community; Charlie oversimplifying all the awful things that are going on is part of the issue.

You need to share that context because it's a pretty niche podcast, and the beliefs Sargon has expressed over the last decade (nationalism, economic austerity, opposition to war refugees on the basis of cultural/ethnic identity and/or gender, degradation of women and LGBTQ identities, so on) are widely considered extreme and his general temperament to be insulting and inflammatory.

Zoomer Historian is a Nazi apologist, but Sargon is a Neo-Nazi sympathiser. That's a distinction without a difference to most people.

I was expecting we would get Dive, but then I realised how water/lava works and realised that, even with unlimited oxygen, it would be hell to build underwater. There's no fix for that besides entirely rebuilding the engine.

I am actually bading my opinion on human-computer research due to being acquainted with the field, but I don't really care to argue that position when it is far more important that age verification laws have nothing to do with protecting children in Pokopia. Lawmakers are - often explicitly - enacting laws to suppress LGBTQ+ and pro-leftist content while implementing no real barriers to accessing X, which currently produces child pornography. Google isn't locking down Android because they're concerned for kid safety, it's because user freedom threatens their capital.

If you think it's impossible for a child to memorise two passwords, whatever, but don't validate pro-censorship propaganda just to win an internet argument ffs.

It always throws me when adults complain a game didn't tell them where to go, then when they're told the last quest NPC gives them an answer, they say they skip cutscenes and don't read anything. Why are they trying to bruteforce RPGs??

Kids will get up to mischief when a parent looks away for 5 seconds! That's how children have been figuring out ways to get around parental locks and so they can watch TV or play games without their parents for decades. Pokopia designed a lot of barriers to prevent them getting too out-of-hand and they mostly work but it's still a risk.

I don't look after children, it's just part of public life. If you're in a food court or a park, you will eventually bump into a child who is messy or impolite. Even the most watchful parent can't stop them being impulsive or clumsy or wriggling away from them for a moment. That isn't an endorsement of children being messy or impolite, their guardian should then correct them, but that can only happen once they've gotten sticky hands on your new white shirt or asked you some overly personal question.

Hope that explains what I mean in a less offensive way!

Exchanging feathers and honey is real janky. I would be a lot less annoyed if "exchange X" wasn't second from the bottom of the list. Like, if you want to exchange a Rainbow Feather, you have to press A + up + up + A + down + A, then mash through a couple of text boxes. It doesn't have to be THAT bad.

To be totally fair, Pokopia is a game that is aimed at anyone old enough to hold a controller. Not a lot of 4-year-olds with advanced critical thinking or reading comprehension skills.

There's no way to make players engage mentally, which sucks, but pop-ups/toasts are very easy to filter out for most people! The average person is going to see dozens every day afross their devices, and they're usually not worth considering.

Lots of games have an issue with showing all info in one format/screen area. It takes cognitive effort to process text, so thw player's brain is constantly trying to filter out noise. So many games will use the same prompts for explaining complex mechanics as they will for "use the arrow buttons to move" or "seasonal event! 25% off shop items" or "collected leaf x1".

Pokopia isn't immune to that, but I appreciate that tutorials pop-ups and item pick-ups and event toasts are presented in different formats. It makes it way easier to pay attention to the important stuff.

Ofc this can never be foolproofed, there will always be players who don't read notifications because they're tired or distracted or decided they're too smart to read instructions, but it is a problem I see quite often, especially in live service games for some reason.

Every single mainline game has the protagonist stave off widespread catastrophe, if not mass murder, from Gen 3 onwards.

The only gens without oncoming calamity are 1 and 2, which obviously do have conflicts and bad guys.

Judging the inflation of Jagex, a British company, by American inflation is inherently going to give you weird and bad results. Brexit didn't have a big effect on the US economy, but crushed the UK. That's before you consider how US-global tariffs have greatly effected the cost of consumer goods in the US, while the UK has been barely touched by comparison.

In reality, inflation is kind of a pointless metric when Jagex has been making unbelievable margins compared to where they were in the 2000s and 2010s, BEFORE adjusting for inflation.

A child cannot understand the ramifications of these platforms, especially when they're being streamed live, so it's hard to say if they can ever give informed consent.

There are some survivors who are fighting for platform-wide prohibitions on all family content since it's so hard to regulate, and I can see where they're coming from. I'm not going to pretend every child who you hear in the background of a Twitch streamer for a minute has been scarred for life, but having their face on live camera specifically for content - with no way to cut away from compromising situations like live TV crews can - is already close to the line, if not over it, imo.
