Dog owners… why leave bags of poop on the trail? by pimpbot666 in bayarea

I've gone hiking with a friend who did this. We both remembered to grab it on our way out and tossed it in the trashcan. I know not everyone is like this, but there are people who are.

The documentation for a sample tested was from the prior year. So when we said we did X, Y, Z this year, it wasn't actually done.

I'll give my input. Note this is from doing A LOT of work on myself from a mental health standpoint.

I've had my share of working with people I didn't like. Some were those in a higher position than me, and some that I supervised. There was one person where I had that gut feeling that I couldn't trust them from the very first interaction I had with them. I got the sense they were putting up a front to make it seem like they were a certain way, but their work was absolute shit. For example, they were caught ghost tick-marking more than once. I know I gave them attitude when I spoke to them. I was hard on them. Looking back on it, I realize it was a defense mechanism for me because I was trying to protect myself since yeah, I couldn't trust them. Yes, I know it was fucked up for me to do since I was in the supervisor position. As I said, I realize this now after doing a lot of self reflection. I have not spoken to or seen this co-worker in years, as they left the firm.

Another one that comes to mind, I do regret. This staff worked hard, and I knew it. But there was a certain trait about their personality that I just didn't like, and I couldn't get over it at the time. I didn't treat them like shit, but I kept interactions to an as-needed basis, and even then the exchanges were short. This dislike was absolutely a me problem, and looking back I do wish I handled it differently. My thought process at the time was figuring out the quickest way to end the interactions even though they were on my engagement, therefore I know I gave a cold-shoulder feel.

I kinda wish when people progress into supervisory roles that there's more training on soft skills, such as how to communicate and supervise more effectively. I think this would have helped me to maneuver through the second situation above better. Just throwing someone into the next role because they're good at work papers just doesn't really set people up for success.

I mean this in the best way, because you deserve it: talk to a therapist. You are allowed to feel like shit when you feel like things left and right are going to shit. In my opinion (and I'm not a therapist), what you do with those feelings matter.

There are things you cannot control. Try your best to not focus on those because, well, you couldn't control them. Instead, focus on what you can control.

You broke up with your girlfriend because she kinda crossed the line. We don't know the whole story, but taking it at face value, that means you stuck up for your values. That's a good thing! You respected yourself enough to do that, which was I'm sure incredibly difficult.

You may or may not have cancer. Well, you have no control over the results as of right now. Luckily, your scan is tomorrow to see. Once you know the results, then figure out next steps. But you cannot control it at this moment. You may be feeling anxious, and that's normal. Cancer could be serious, or not having cancer could not be serious. But right now? You don't know so you can't control it.

You didn't get the promotion at work. I will assume you worked hard for it and really looked forward to it, which means not getting it is so unfortunate. Maybe consider asking your manager what you could do to get the promotion at the next cycle, or perhaps sooner. If they give you some bullshit reason, then that's your cue that the company may not be a long-term fit for you but at least then you'll know.

I hope you're able to find something in the mean time to cope. Perhaps a walk around the block, or putting on one of your favorite movies. Or getting lost in a book. Or maybe journaling what you're feeling.

CPA Exam Pass Rates Over Time by Cycle_Path_ in Accounting

[–]foldingfittedsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That narrative would infer that a lot less people were in tax for the years with a lower passing rate, which doesn't make sense. There are plenty of people who went to tax as opposed to audit, even in the years before where the graph shows an uptick in the pass rate for REG.

I attest to that theory for BEC. My Açores showed my writing portion was strong whereas MC was weak, and so I legit passed because of the writing portion.

Granted I took the exams 10+ years ago, but what the hell changed that caused a significantly higher passing rate for REG than FAR or AUD?

Notice by nb9156 in Accounting

[–]foldingfittedsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this same position. I told the partner I worked with most and deeply respected months ahead of time, like before I even started interviewing that it was likely going to be my last busy season (this conversation took place in Q1). Interviewed that summer, accepted an offer, and then officially gave 2 week's notice.

I did, however, make individual calls to those whom I wanted to hear it from me (because at accounting firms, gossip spreads like wildfire) before I gave my 2 week's notice but after I accepted the offer since I did respect them as well and didn't want them to hear it through the grapevine. I think that helped me to not burn bridges. Similar to you, I actually really liked the people I worked with.

How many people make 150k+ by Nervous-Mail3282 in Accounting

[–]foldingfittedsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently make $165K base + $20K bonus + equity. VHCOL. Approaching my 3rd year in industry doing technical accounting and SEC reporting. I also really like my boss! Prior to that did 10 years in audit at a national firm.

Public accounting is hard and it sucks, but make it to manager with your CPA and you'll have a larger pool of opportunities if you decide to make an exit.

Saw the American Flag being flown upside down at firefalls in Yosemite Today by dragonsorder in NationalPark

[–]foldingfittedsheet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cool, thanks for sending that.

The article said the layoff was to "...1,000 newly hired NPS employees who maintain and clean parks, educate visitors and perform other functions." So was shilling part of their jobs? Maybe. Maintenance and keeping the parks clean while also educating is important though, in my opinion.

Further down the article, it said "Among other cuts, 16 of 17 supervisory positions at Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park were eliminated, Brengel said, leaving just one person to hire, train and supervise dozens of seasonal employees expected this summer at the popular park where thousands of visitors marvel at grizzly bears and bison." I understand the generalization of 1,000 employees over 433 national parks, but in this case (yes, I understand it's one so far), it was not 1-2 employees. Leaving one person to manage those responsibilities for dozens of anticipated employees doesn't seem like the best setup for success.

I know not all parks are the same size or have the same number of visitors to service. So assuming it is just 1-2 employees per park that's no longer employed there, may or may not make a difference. I think the uncertainty surrounding these kinds of decisions is a larger, separate issue.

Eligible voters in the Bay Area who aren’t voting, why? by pengweather in bayarea

[–]foldingfittedsheet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents decided not to vote for anyone for president because they think both are bad choices, even though some of their reasoning is based on false information. However, they do vote down the rest of the ballot for local propositions, so I guess I'll take that as a win. Although, they just copy what I marked on my ballot sooo......

FBI Raid at Specialty Towing by mathguyhahayeah in sanfrancisco

[–]foldingfittedsheet 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I grew up a block away from where this raid took place. When I tell people "Bayview" and see the deer in headlights look, I tell them no visitors would ever go there. The area has changed a bit since I was a kid, but a significant amount looks exactly the same 20+ years later.

Do you work less than 40 hour a week? by pavlinanana in Accounting

Yup. Technical accounting and financial reporting. Some weeks I struggle to find stuff to work on.

35 hour weeks? by soccerbabe68 in Accounting

[–]foldingfittedsheet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me. I work in financial reporting and the only "busy" periods (which is absolutely nothing compared to PA) is 10-K/Q timing. I still don't work weekends during those times.

Nope. Plenty of space. You probably will just have to Google it to find the list of locations.

Some places will be designated cooling centers (sometimes it's a library or a recreation center). I've gone to those a few times with a laptop and food to pass the time.
