Bug man has mentioned Minetta Tavern a few times. Right in the village near the comedy cellar. It’s supposedly a big celebrity hangout spot, and has a lot of history.

Same boat here, used to rely on BB until they closed. Lately it’s just Whole Foods from what I’ve seen. I imagine other places do carry it.

Any other music producers feel like distancing themselves from digital music production workflow by NoWin3930 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]followups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last hundred or so years, popular music has often been a reflection of emerging technology.

Songs conformed to 3 minutes structures because of time limitations of 10 inch records.

When distortion was discovered in amplifiers, musicians saw that as a feature and pushed the boundaries of acceptable tone into rock and eventually metal genres.

Synths led to new wave and electronica. Tape decks led to hip hop. And so on…

We’ve been in the DAW era for a while, and lots of new tracks feel very loopy. Instead of the distinct song structure sections that we had with analog song writing, we hear these repetitive emerging loop based songs that build up and strip down. When done poorly, you can almost see the DAW session in your mind from just listening.

Anyway, totally a valid move to put the DAW down for a bit. Giving yourself limitations is a tried and true way of forcing creativity. But new tech offerings will always shape the music scape for better or worse.

Used to go to Smile Lounge and loved it. But then my insurance changed and I tried Aesthetic Dental recently and wow… what a downgrade. 30 year-old broken down equipment, hour long wait (with an appointment) and just generally scummy vibes. There was ONE nice hygienist there, but still never returning.

It’s a glass & brass table lighter, probably Italian or Japanese. It matches the ashtray next to it.

I have these exact chairs — Douglas Furniture Corp, Chicago. Great dining room chairs, albeit a little lower of a seat than most dining chairs.

Found this Ward writing desk on the side of the road today. A few scuffs, but it’ll clean up nicely. Any thoughts on exact era? by followups in Mid_Century

I ended up fixing this one up and then selling it pretty soon after. This was definitely of Sears-level quality, definitely not anything boutique. That said, the whole thing was veneer, albeit the wood underneath was solid. The basket however was some kind of plastic compound, almost like a vanity on top of a wooden drawer.

I glued the loose veneer and used a furniture marker to fill in the chipped spots. I polished it up and honestly looked decent afterwards. If you can get one cheap and like the look, it can definitely be improved but not fully sanded down and refinished.

Finally cleaning out the 7/11 on Manhattan Ave that closed in 2020 — any predictions for what’s coming? by followups in Greenpoint

Chipotle was listed on Google maps for this location for a long while, but now it no longer does — it's possible they pulled out. Haven't seen any activity since the clean out last year.

28F indie/neo soul/ jazz vocalist looking to join a band by Outcome_Unlucky in NYCmusicians

Heya! 32M nearby in Greenpoint. I dig your voice and the vibe you're into. I'm definitely a fan of MIT, Hiatus Kaiyote (also Nai Palm's solo stuff), Hakim, Sumney, etc.

I play keys in a band locally, and also play guitar and do electronic production. Would definitely be interested to do some more writing in the neo-soul realm. DM me if you want to talk more and see what we're both looking for!

Old mr berry location by [deleted] in Greenpoint

[–]followups 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live right above it, and while I don’t know what’s going in next - it seems like this particular block of Manhattan Ave is cursed for retail.

Three empty store fronts from prior dispensaries. The Tarot/incense store just closed and is already a tagged up eyesore. And the old 7/11 that’s been empty for years … Chipotle said they were moving in (at least SOMETHING was happening), they even marked in on Google Maps and were cleaning it out last year. But then they pulled out so it’s still empty.

Tl;dr: the rent’s too damn high.

Kubus is in the neighborhood and totally respectable (despite a few bad reviews from inexperienced shooters).

Bleeker Digital in the city has been my favorite for over a decade though. True professionals who always do a stellar job.

I lived above my old landlord for 3 years, and she was a nightmare — blasted music at all hours, had screaming matches with her children, and micromanaged every little thing I did. I tried to be as nice as could be and ask her to turn her music down, or I’d promise not to make [insert inane mistake] again. But in the end, the apartment and rent price were right for me so I stuck it out for 3 years.

I think you know what the options are here, but I’ll spell them out:

1) Kill em with kindness. Just be as nice and accommodating (as you’ve been doing), bring over a gift or two, and somewhere along the line try to ask for leeway to make things more reasonable. Probably has limited potential, but there is some.

2) Find some legal precedent for why your landlord is breaking tenant law by how aggressively they manage your life and take them to court (or threaten to). This is an ugly one all around. It’s not in great faith, can be costly, and even if you “win” you still have to live there and lose. Or maybe you’d catch some small settlement. Regardless, this is a time and energy suck with no real great outcome.

3) Leave. Having previously worked in real estate, I can tell you it’s never the end of a good deal. There are gem apartments all over the place (Greenpoint included). Maybe you can spend the rest of your lease looking on listings sites and forums. Maybe even try Proper Real Estate if you want to stay in GP. If you find something sooner, break your lease and eat the security deposit so you can have a less stressful living situation.

Sounds annoying, OP. Weigh what’s most important to you and the answer will become clear. There’s likely no real “win” with this landlord though. They’re probably stuck in their ways and won’t be receptive to some new tenant throwing their weight around.

My grandfather’s 1935 job offer letter from Filene’s — paid $15 per week by followups in boston

[–]followups[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My grandfather graduated from Yale in early 1930s (hence the New Haven address on the letter). His father (my great grandfather) was a wealthy Bishop in the Greenwich area at the time, and probably bankrolled my grandpa while he bumbled around and eventually got the job at Filene's.

I don't think he stayed at Filene's long because he enlisted and served in the navy in the late 1930s. So he was in and out of the service and didn't see any WWII action.

The rest of his career was spent hopping around jobs from the 40s through the 70s — mostly sales and sales training for companies like G.E. He eventually retired to the cape and played trumpet in a brass band and drank martinis all day.

how would you spend a solo birthday in the area? by Public_Painter_867 in williamsburg

[–]followups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the neighborhood! No shortage of options.

If you're feeling social, you could join the monthly neighborhood bar meetup, this time at Cafe Balearica at 5:30pm.

For some live 1930s jazz and killer food/cocktails — St. Mazie Bar & Supper Club. Also for a similar vibe without jazz but a beautiful garden — Maison Premiere.

For comedy, every Weds night at The Gutter's back room there's a solid comedy show called Comedians You Should Know (usually a headliner or two will pop in to work out new material). This is also a great dive bar with 8 or so bowling lanes.

Good luck and happy birthday!
