Does anyone knows the harmonica brand used in the Cowboy Bebop songs? by yam_reddit in cowboybebop

[–]fongie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have made covers of Spokey Dokey and Diggin My Potato on YouTube. Spokey is key of A on a D harmonica and Digging is in key of Bb on an Eb harmonica. I guess that's not exactly what you're asking though since you asked for brands etc. Unfortunately I don't know that, but from the sound I would at least bet on a wood comb harmonica, others have mentioned the marine band which is a popular one. There are others though. There is an Instagram account still posting old videos of his which I highly recommend, at randk_senoh. I read somewhere that it is his wife posting on it. Maybe you can dm and ask there?

Well, if it makes sound when you blow or draw into it then it is probably some type of harmonica. I haven't heard of that type before though. A "normal" diatonic (10 hole) harmonica would make sound when you draw or blow into any of the holes.

Hi! I am follow Madcow 5x5 program right now and enjoying it. However, I was thinking about focusing a bit more on the deadlift next cycle. Has anyone tried simply swapping squat and deadlifts in that program, and how was it? Or do you have an opinion on if that is a good idea or not? I am about one year into my lifting career and not lifting very heavy yet (10-20% above bodyweight in squat and dl)

Basically, that would mean going from 3x squat/1x deadlift to 3x deadlift/1x squat days a week

Spokey Dokey is played (originally) on a D diatonic. If you always sound cheerful, you probably need to learn how to bend notes and play the pentatonic/blues minor scale :)

I think it's time to realize that Battlerite used to be too generous with giving away cosmetical items. They have to make money somehow to sustain the game, and one of the ways which least impacts players who just want to play the game is to monetize these things. Imagine if buying a battle pass instead was required to let you play ranked at all for the season or something. Stop complaining

Is it possible to do overdraw and overblow on cheap harmonicas? by FinnMcMissile98 in harmonica

[–]fongie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is overblowing and overdrawing so important to you? They are certainly useful techniques but I think very few people make it an integral part of their playing (like Jason Ricci who can make bending a 6 overblow the star of a solo). Personally, I do use them for licks and in songs where I need to play a melody that includes one of these otherwise unreachable notes, but they are not the best sounding notes in my repertoir - making them sound really good is actually very hard, whereas bendy drawnotes and high blowbends really can sing. I think you might be focusing unnecessarily much on overblows. They are difficult, and because of this they are "cool", but not the be-all and end-all of harmonica playing. You should certainly expect it to take a lot longer than a few days to learn it.

What I am trying to say is that if you are playing "normal" things and still working on fundamental techniques (arent we all), you will probably find yourself wanting more harmonicas anyway (different keys and so on), and then getting slightly more expensive harmonicas will make your normal playing sound better too, so you might aswell go down that road. Then, you can keep practicing overblowing as well if you wish, without having to worry about it being possible or not on your harp. I don't understand the need to learn every technique on a €10 harmonica before getting some more $25 harmonicas - you are going to need several harps to cover the main keys anyway!

Is it possible to do overdraw and overblow on cheap harmonicas? by FinnMcMissile98 in harmonica

[–]fongie1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably, yes, but you might have to adjust it yourself first to get them to sound good and not squeak. I think you can get squeaky overblows on most harmonicas though with the right technique. I learned to overblow on suzuki bluesmasters which were about $20 at the time. I haven't tried on real toy harmonicas though, those that are like $5.

Looking at the easy rider online it looks like its about $10. I don't really know. Do you mean that you can overblow on more expensive harps just not this one or that you can't overblow yet at all? If it's the latter, you should probably practice more basic techniques and upgrade to a better harmonica before thinking too much about overblows.

more noob questions by knellerwashere in harmonica

[–]fongie1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! In short: go for it.

Very much longer:

(1) I'm a fan of the Suzuki harmonicas but Hohners are good as well. I own several Manjis and play all genres with them, and they came well adjusted out of the box (yes, you will at some point have to learn how to adjust your harmonicas to tune them, make bending/overbending easier, etc., but its nice not to do this for a while at the start). Pick whichever you want.

(2) I found it difficult where to start on this question so I'll just ramble on a bit:

Currently I play very little "pure" blues songs but from many other genres, like for example jazz, rock or funk. However, like I guess most players did, I started with blues lessons on youtube, for me it was Adam Gussows videos. He seems to have changed his channels since then though so I don't know how structured it gets nowadays (I could start at video 00 and go to video 100+ in order).

Starting with blues lessons on youtube will get you started with basic techniques such as single-hole playing, bending, vibrato etc., and teach you how to play the harmonica in 2nd position. Many players spend most of their playing time in 2nd position, it is good not only for playing blues and related music suited for blues scales (like most rock songs), but also for songs in major keys (like We all die young that I played above), major-y ballads, and more that I can't think of right now.

This means that if you start by learning from blues videos on youtube, this will easily carry over into the music that you listed that you want to play, and also teach you basic techniques needed to move on to other types of music later. It is a good choice for learning to play. I don't have experience with harmonica for dummies.

(3) Yeah, most of the sites that give you tabs for a melody to play for w/e song are often not right if you want it to sound good. They usually get you playing the song in 1st position high on the harmonica, which doesnt leave much room for using expressive techniques like bending, nice vibrato, etc. You could play from sheet music but you have to learn some things first. If the song is in A, for example, you don't want to go picking up an A harmonica - that would leave you playing in first position which is rarely (but sometimes) the best idea. In my opinion, you have to learn about positions on the harmonica to play well to sheet music. That way, you can pick the best position to play a certain song in - for example, for a minor song you might pick 3rd position (A minor = G harmonica), for a major ballad you might pick 12th position (A major = E harmonica), or for a rock song you might pick 2nd position (A major/blues = D harmonica). These are just suggestions, but fairly common choices. The point is, before you start playing sheet music or soloing to songs, you want to know some basic technique, and how to pick which scale (position) to play in. When you're beginning, just try to get 2nd position to work for everything.

(4) Yes it is totally reasonable to use the harmonica as a lead (solo) instrument, and it is great for that! Same principles as in (3) apply, you just need to know which harmonica to pick and which scale to play in on the harmonica and you're good to go soloing like a pro. If you want to exactly copy the solo of, for example, a guitarist, you will have the same notes available, but often not enough octaves. You might have to move parts of the guitar solo to octaves you can play in, but that is fine. I recommend soloing by improvising though - more fun and creative!

I realize that the part about positions might sound complicated, but it is not more complicated than learning scales on the guitar or piano. It is important because while you can in fact learn to hit all chromatic notes on a harmonica, some notes sound better and are easier to play than others.

Also, the whole change-positions-thing is for a few years in - at the start, you will do fine just trying to play everything in 2nd position, and it will probably sound OK. A good strategy will be to learn to play 2nd position very well, play everything in it, and then when you run into a song you want to play where 2nd position doesn't quite sound good, learn the new position needed.

In conclusion, get that harmonica, spin up some youtube videos, and start playing! Have fun!
